@MaxwellHowe @zakimak when you manage your asset and allow development well, you can afford to "lose" the likes of Bobby Ryan and get Silverberg and Ricthie to add to the system. You can afford to l "lose" gardiner and lupul and still be competitive. No doubt some luck was involved at the draft but you can't denied it is run correctly. Imagine in a couple years what they'd get for Perry once Ricthie comes into his own. Another set of high draft picks and players to re up the system again. Makes me sick being a Leafs fan looking at our system

@Jordan29 we missed many opportunities but hindsight is 20/20. At one point I thought there was a market for him for a 2nd rounder. Then the concussion and foolish extension. Once he came back, he wasn't getting the ice time needed and relegated to Carlyle's dog house. His stock then turned to shit.. Kulimen and Raymond would have gotten us something at the trade deadline but we were still in it. Now Reimer and Franson...Selling low all the time. It seems we have been at the wrong end of various decisions for the past years no matter the management....

What a stupid logic about Kamo. He wanted $2 million and you's rather spend almost as much last year on Orr and McClaren and looks to repeat the same thing this year. This is justification to the fans - "he's greedy" rather than poor asset and cap management. Starting to rethink about this guy

@BurtonboyNice and catchy headline but....reading it doesn't seem to say absolutely that..."DION is our guy" either:

“I don’t know if it (stripping the captaincy) is a solution,” said Shanahan. “I think it’s a cop-out, to a certain degree an easy way out.

“Has it happened on some teams? Yes. Is it something I’m thinking about since I’ve been here? Ultimately this will be a group decision. But I can tell you it’s not something I’ve contemplated. Just the opposite. I want to help enhance the player and leader that Dion is.”

Shanahan said he — like many around the league — was transfixed by the the team’s collapse this season, losing 12 of 14 to end the season. He said he admired Phaneuf’s desire if not his execution.

“I look at a guy like Dion before I had any thoughts of coming to Toronto, I’ll say that I felt that he . . . there are certain times when less is more,” said Shanahan. “(I) really felt that he was trying to be all things at once. I admire the fact he was trying, even though it wasn’t successful, it probably worked in the opposite manner.

“I don’t think anyone here just rolled over. I know there were times they were accused of that. I’ve heard too many times in my life, talking about leadership, this team can’t succeed with this leadership group until they do. That’s something that can be developed.”

@DWCMLHS Toughness is not punching the other guy's teeth in although that can be part of it if necessary. It is however about willingness to sacrifice, standing up for your teammates and go to area where it will hurt while not backing down. All of which the Leafs lack last year.

@Black_Hawk @zakimak@rustynailthat is essentially what happens if your point being Babcock becomes available. All this smoke and mirror sends the wrong message. Players have the power especially the locked-in highly paid ones so that doesn't matter. As for money, it's not that it matters. its the message. The message that your failure is fine.

If the coach is not the problem then the players are. If that's the case, you trade them away anyway/ Signing him to extension makes no sense.

6 months, 2 weeks ago on Sticking by the wrong guy

@rustynail If that premise is true why would you need to give him the extension? Staying with him might be tolerable but extension really means rewarding for worst than mediocrity

@The_Polish_Cannon @BPsotka@CanuckUKinTorontoThe problem with signing Bolland is he is purportedly asking 5 Million a year. You simply can do that for a 3rd C When you're tied to significant money elsewhere with the addition of needed improvement at the backend. The Leafs are a cap team and that really hurts when injury happens or when you need to move personnel. This cannot happen. you need flexibility and this team needs significant assets elsewhere. 3C is not there problem. Again Holland can fill that role with minimal roll-off while allowing improvement elsewhere.

@BPsotka @zakimak@MaxwellHowe@BobsyouruncleI am not sure he was a "better" the latter half of the season considering the injury. And at this point and stats do support it is that he had per game more points. That said, the leafs do not need his points but the defensive side. Holland I think can fill that roll and at a much lower price point. His upside is only going up. IMO he just needed more opportunity. He has hands and can easily fill the 3 C roll. Considering everything, cap injury and roster moves, I'd stick with Holland

@BPsotka @MaxwellHowe@zakimak@Bobsyouruncle Bolland is not there to score...the points that he got in the beginning of the campaign does not warrant an extension. Significant injury, expensive and roles for him to score is not needed. You need defensive play and Holland is hell of a lot cheaper than Bolland.

@Bobsyouruncle it was a logical signing at the time. It's just not a good one for resign now when you have Holland and Bolland asking 5 plus. The cap has an effect for mid tier guys. 3-3.5 makes sense but not above that

Goals breakdown:

Go ahead goals - 18

Game tying goals - 7

Insurance goals - 3

Insurance plus 1 - 1

First goal for team - 2

Dagger goals - Leafs leading by 2 or more - 4

"combeback goals - get within 1 - 1

Meanlingless goals 2

Look at last years goals and the breakdown will be similar. It's not the amount you score but what those goals means. This guys competes. He just doesn't care when it's over.

@Waiting4LSC Many if not all wants Carlyle gone but what's the difference firing him now and the end of the playoff when some coaches might be available, the draft, the beginning of training camp, etc? What we all expect is a new voice come starting day and if there isn't one there better be a damn good reason for it. To just fire him for the sake of firing is knee jerk (even though I think he should be gone)  which Shanahan must not do even if he's already made up his mind. There needs to be a process or a PERCEIVED process. I doubt Shanahan is the type to just ride it out without making changes. This market cannot go through another 5 year rebuild. Changes will be made but more strategic ones rather than just coming in and tearing everything down and that means slow steps including the expected and eventual firing.

Of all the teams in the league, is there one team who's captain is as controversial as Phaneuf to their fan base?

7 months, 1 week ago on NHL Playoffs Round 1 – Open Thread

@Greg Fenton @animalresPhaneuf is getting the most blame because much is expected of him. Everything about being the captain requires it and his pay warrants it. No one would really put him on the block if he was NOT the captain or was making much less than his current 6.5 soon to be 7. People expects a lot from their captain.

I don't recall any captain is this controversial.
