Of all the teams in the league, is there one team who's captain is as controversial as Phaneuf to their fan base?
@Greg Fenton @animalresPhaneuf is getting the most blame because much is expected of him. Everything about being the captain requires it and his pay warrants it. No one would really put him on the block if he was NOT the captain or was making much less than his current 6.5 soon to be 7. People expects a lot from their captain.
I don't recall any captain is this controversial.
@Keeon Accountability is what this team lacks. No one is accountable with the exception of a couple of whipping boys. You deal with the issues not the person when it is accountability. Real leadership is ageless and recognizes and demand accountability.
@Belfour20/JB-45 @Jmessihhe was all over the ice...not sure that is an indication of greatness... or more of no one gives a shit at any system anyway and I might as well roam.... Definitely show skills but great? not sure there

@Jmessih @zakimakno one will....every reporter talks shit then cave when the opportunity arises....Yesterday on Leafs lunch was a prime example....Nonis was primed and they loft softballs and did not confront him...only after he was off air...They bitch again about the answer...typical
Randy...why did you insist on dressing the fourth line that a) can't play or b) won't play?
@Jmessih It gave the majority of the fan base false confidence
he knows about leadership...oh oh

@Xxxxxnew If he signs an extension with NJ, it really goes to show how attractive our market is when no doubt MLSE would have over paid whatever he asked. Sad

@rustynail From athletic perspective and many many others, he is the greatest ever.
1 week ago on Peter DeBoer makes some sense as the Maple Leafs’ next head coach
At the end of the day no matter who you hire, if players don't compete or be accountable, it's all for not
@Gilbey93 @BS4PrezCan't see Kadri on the third line but with Bozak on the third line would be a real strength.
@4evrblue fester gave a better endorsement when Burke was hired....."...I'd still be paid for the next 4 years"
1 week, 1 day ago on Game Review: Game #81, Panthers 4 vs. Leafs 2
@The_Irv I don't think they are a "bad" team. They have no compete level, no desire, no passion and always passive. This team react rather than dictate. Corsi and what not has merit but only to certain degree. If we can analysis and be that predictive as claimed everything in sports then there's no point of competing. This team has won "in spite of" rather than "because of"..as you've said.
If you look at this team this year, they are tremendously soft. They are not feared because it's like every guy is on an island with no support. Whether it's physical support or just hockey play, this bleeds into all area.
The system has not worked because they don't compete for the puck. The system is designed to out man your opponent thus gaining possession. The down side is if you lose possession, the other guys are left open. Not saying the system doesn't suck but it should be a lot better than it is because the players refuse or unwilling to compete.There's many reasons why this happen but I really think it is unaccountability. At some point players simply did not give a shit. to the coach or anyone else. Only did NoNo made the speech mid season did something happen. But we all know now how well that lasted. This tells me the dynamic of the whole team needs to change.
@loomx @Chris Jayagreed and no one would trade that much assets for potential unless it's generational player...even at that, it's hard to justify...people remember lindros
@loomx @Chris Jay
Reilly or Kessel or JVR
Gardiner or Bernier and our 1st and maybe more
@The_Irv I get it and the bunch of "reason" behind it but it comes down to player playing what is expected of them. It's hard to be accountable when you have multiple layers before anything can be dealt with. This boardroom committee stuff works in the corporate world but does not belong in the sports world. If we look back at any recent success and particularly the Leafs, the guy running the bench had a lot of power. Quinn and Burns had huge personality and had complete support. Players were accountable. These guys aren't.
@The_Irv another layer for unaccountability
@B_Leaf it would be more interesting if NJ won the lottery

@Greg Fenton isn't it the coaches primary job is to get the team to play the way he wants?
@vji67 Reading that reminds me of going to the casino...the longer you play with everything being equal, sooner or later the house will come up on top. Streaks are finite
@wendelsfist @rustynailor he is just feeding them.
1 week, 4 days ago on Poll: Who do you want as the Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs?
@rustynail Carlye said he likes to see how he himself can manage his personnel better.
@Bruffins @zakimak@Great DaneSeriously dude...think for one minute. If Phaneuf comes out and said, I've had this injury all year and that's why I've been making these bone headed plays lately...what would you say?."it's okay, you're injured"...Bolland giveaway..."it's okay, you're injured"... right.
@Bruffins @zakimak@Great DaneNever said 'those guys" said it. Statements like that post above does...Whatever the justification for it is fine...Not going to debate with you on this. you love phaneuf and I get it. so I'll leave it at that.
@Great Dane Last time I checked true leadership don't use injuries as an excuse.
@Great Dane Just a matter of time.
@B_Leaf It's easier said than done. You have to remember the salary cap situation and the UFA availability at the time. People can revision whatever they want but I recalled alot of people talking up a storm about Clarkson and Bolland. No one ever saw Clarkson being THIS bad, if he had maybe 10 goals more, we'd probably in the playoffs. That said, the situation with Garbo and McCarthur was not workable with Carlyle. it was clear and that wasn't working so NoNo stuck with Carlyle and made the changes. At the end of the day, it definitely did not work out but I doubt the situation would be different with Garbo/McArthur/Karmo. We have the personnel to win but just didn't execute. There's blame all around but Carlyle should wear lots of it...Much more so than Nonis IMO.
@B_Leaf @zakimak@CanuckUKinToronto@rustynail@mlclearwaterI disagree, Not the biggest problem but has the most influential. I am sure the Clarkson along with Bolland deal was with Carlyle in mind. All other ones are acceptable. Losing Colborne was because of personnel and waiver, getting Holland was because of injuries (not bad trade in my books)....I can;t think of where he has "failed"...judgement is still a year or so away in my books
@CanuckUKinToronto @B_Leaf@rustynail@mlclearwater When you fail to recognize that your system does not work, fail to call a timely time-out, fail to make the players accountable, fail chose the best personnel for a given situation, you fail as a coach.
@mlclearwater Magic....we seem to think we can have anyone we want and their organization just sits there and say please...your MLSE, take whatever you want....while at it, take Stamkos and Tarvares too.
@jcg_4 True leadership elevates and demands accountability. I have seen all season long where the young guys have been sat for one mistake while working their ass off. Holland D'amigo Bodie to name a few. whereas the likes of Fanson, Gunnerson and Phaneuf, Lupu, Kessel gets do overs. That's not accountability.
@oldhockeyfan When the team consistently don't show up for must games or fold when pressure is dial up, that tells you it is not about talent but compete level and attitude, all of which means leadership.
@Burtonboy Boo fucking hoo Randy
@CanuckUKinToronto @zakimakAgreed coaching is one...The system sucked and if Carlyle didn't recognized that during the mid year swoon then he deserved to be fired. Winning is always fun. I don't give a shit of what people say. As you said sit the guys who doesn't buy in, the problem is from my vantage point some of those guys are your best talented players. When you see the guys who tries and does not get the ice time while your 'best' players continue to make mistake with no repercussion, then the team is no longer a team. Accountability applies to everyone. Until that message is loud and clear, winning will be illusive
@CanuckUKinToronto All year long this team has played to the level of their opponents. They
don't dictate but react. They won "in spite of" rather "because of". They don't need major overhaul in talent. They need major overhaul in compete level and attitude.
@peterbleafs Because this "buy in" crap. Today's sports is all about the players and they know it. There's agents, advisers and what not always dictate how they should be treated. Try benching Kessel for any length of time and I guarantee you, the coach would lose that battle. The power at the end of the day belongs to the players, especially those who are elite.The trick is getting these guy on your side or your captain who is respected by all and everyone will follow.
@peterbleafs We always have to look at coaches like players as well. The guys who have or is having success rarely will leave their situation. It's not like we can go and say Hitch or Barb come work for us. Their loyalty and the organization won't simply allow that to happen. There's really two choices, those that are out of a job or those up comer. The Leafs can't have a neophyte and every time we went that route for any non-player situation, it has been a disaster. The Leafs needs someone who truly understands the market and is not so easily sway by the media or fan base. A type A personality that is immune to the market. Looking at the last several "successful" coaches, you'd think of Quinn and Burns both are big personalities. It's a tough market and not everyone is suited.
@Lescott Some guys are destined as assistants rather than the main guy. Kitchen is one of those. We need a Type A personality guy here to deal with everything aside from hockey.
@trueblu @Greg Fenton@peterbleafs@bob sacamanoScoring was never the issue of this team. When you can't hold leads, give up the most shots, have woeful PK, silly giveaways, scoring doesn't matter. This team needs to score on a consistent basis 3 goals or more to win. That tells you scoring isn't the problem.
All year long this team has played to the level of their opponents. They don't dictate but react. They won "in spite of" rather "because of"
@Greg Fenton @Anthony Petrielli@Burtonboy@Murph2417Barbcock will not ever leave detroit...The relationship with ownership and fan base is cemented there.
@peterbleafs Reimer might get you a second dependent on the next 3 games or be part of a package that might work for both teams
@wendelsway1 That too
@bob sacamano Holland can do the job....the money should be spent on the D.
@4evrblue @zakimak@TheGroobsterI doubt it actually, if they had made the playoff and there's some indication Bolland's play is on par, I think he would have but given the situation, major changes are needed and Bolland is not a part that would make us significantly better especially for the money. As far as Liewekee is concern, I have no idea what's he's thinking but this guy won't fuck around. That said, it could be very problematic too.
There isn't much of UFA in the market place so that only leaves the
trade route. There's several teams that will be in transition and in
need of a change for sure. I'd be surprise if NoNo doesn't do at least
one blockbuster. Winnipeg comes immediately to mind. As far as coaching, this team will not improve if fundamentally the team does not change in their compete level. The system is/was stupid but blame should also goes to the players.
@4evrblue @TheGroobsterSeriously, what has he REALLY done to deserve that kind of money...Too bad for the injury but does $5 per is deserved on reputation alone? Anything above 4 and 3 years is too much. Not saying he won't get it on the market and if someone is willing all the better but for that price I'd put it on Holland and invest on the D.
