This Leafs can be compared to a racing team. The owner of the team wants to win the Rally Championship. He hires a GM to take care of putting a team together with support staff. The Gm hires a past rally champions to drive the cars. The Gm goes out and spends his budget on the best cars money can buy. He get a Ferrari, a Bentley, a Bugatti, and a Corvette. All these cars are super fast and have a lot of finesse. Others would agree they are great cars but not one of them was suited to the task of Rally driving. You need a car that can handle enormous amounts of physical punishment and be able to go into the dirty spots. You'll still need speed and good handling from these cars but toughness is the most important need. Get the right cars for the right race Shanny.

@Mcost61 @Jmessih We keep forgetting that Kadri gets his points on different lines usually. There's never been a consistent line make up for him. Bozak gets to play consistently with the top line and gets almost the same amount of points. I'd keep Kadri and part with Bozak. Boazk can get a good return right now. Kadri  has been dragged through the dirt with RC . I bet Shanny isn't happy with RC for doing that with Leafs members. You do that shit behind closed doors, not in public for everyone to see the dirty laundry. You kill every chance of making good trades with the actions RC had taken. Nonis should've reamed him out for that.

@Keeon What's more shocking is we have a taller set of players on average. Close to Boston's average height. They are not being used correctly. And yes i took every players average height on all the teams that win consistently and they are way below us in average height. Only a few teams beat us and they we're top teams usually.

@zakimak @Keeon This season's whipping boys were Reimer, Gardiner, Kadri and Reilly. Come to thnk of it i don't think Rc had the courage to face the others, only the young ones it seems.

The more I watch Gardiner, the more I feel he wants to be like Bobby Orr. This might be what Shanny was referring to, when he said a lot of pieces on the team, have been misused? If you got a player that can cause havoc and move the puck like Gardiner does shouldn't a coach build a line around that ability?

Should we let the UFA"s go and then trade the long term contracts for first or second picks 2014-2015? If we could lock up first 3 picks in next years draft and maybe 2 this year, would we not be formidable team in the future? Who wouldn't bite at Kessel for the first pick next year or Dion for second pick this year? Don't get me wrong we have good players on this team but their minds have been tainted now so you need to start all over.

@Belfour20/JB-45 @Pent_House They could set it up as a play by play type with chosen announcers. Before, during or after the game, they could chose questions from the comments board and combine them in with the cast.

@Bruffins @Greg Fenton But doesn't Goaltending and defense win you cups nowadays? I realise you need scoring but Boston doesn't seem to need it too much to win.

@Greg Fenton  There is merit in what you say GF. They all ready have 2 potential all star calibre young D and could improve slowly for the future by drafting the D they always wanted. In 3 years they'd have a strong set of defensive units to lead team for a cup run along with a goalie in his prime.

I hope Reimer gets back to back shut outs at the Worlds. It will really prove once and for all, how good he really is and whether they should be flailing RC for his treatment of Reimer. Plus it will totally increase his value and desirability if we need to trade him. We need to catch a break for once as fans. It's been a season filled with too many Insanely ridiculous results from one extreme to the other. No in between or consistency.

@rustynail @mcloki I think Shanny will be more involved in the draft than we expect. He needs to gauge what this management has done and is doing wrong. So he needs a hands on approach until the ship is steady.

I've been trying to draw parallels between the Leafs and similar type teams. One that came to mind is Washington. They have a great goal scorer in Ovie but failed to make the playoffs. Is this a common trend when you have prolific scorers on your team? I can't find good stats to back it up. Would there be a stat or set of indicators that could show these type of results for or against? Or is just the plus/minus what to use for this type of endeavour?

2 days, 22 hours ago on Leafs Notebook – Season Finale – April 14

@Anthony Petrielli @deedrag Agreed. They just need to find someone to protect our goalies. Everyone can say the shit they want about Reimer or Bernier but if they don't get run they don't get hurt. That is the best chance you have of winning, protecting those  assets so they can play for you night in night out.

AP, that wasn't a notebook. That was an encyclopedia of info. Big hand cramps there I bet? Anyways, agree with a lot of your analysis. I think the goalies must be the most upset of the bunch. They knew it wasn't normal for a team to be giving up that many shots a night and to top it off, they were getting run almost every game. Aside from Gleason, (apologies if I missed someone) no one stood up for them. I get the feeling Gleason is not going anywhere. After all, he blocked a lot of hard shots. Sadly RC's system and others on the team, didn't pick up the slack to lessen that burden. Carlyle burned him and Dion out. After that it's a domino effect. Who do you got left? the younger D still need more time to bulk up and round out their defensive side. They need some more solid D so they can have more depth there and lessen the burden. It's going to be interesting what they think they need first, defensive D or defensively responsible forwards that can win more draws. I will definitely watch out for the ten story lines you selected and hope to hear updates from you as the summer madness begins.

Bob Hartley refused once again to be baited by John Tortorella.

Brian Burke couldn’t resist.

“Shut your mouth, and worry about your team — leave my coach alone,” said Burke publicly to the Vancouver Canucks head coach when asked about Tortorella’s latest whining about the head coach of the Calgary Flames following Sunday’s season finale on the West Coast.

“John Tortorella, who is a friend of mine, should start worrying about John Tortorella and the Vancouver Canucks and stop worrying about us. Our coach (Harley) acted completely appropriately (Sunday) night, and Torts ought to keep his mouth shut.”

These stories are awesome. Smoking lol! You won't see goalies like that anymore wow!

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ago this spring, Ron Hextall woke up before a Game 7 in Pittsburgh and told his coaches - including Paul Holmgren, his head coach - that this is how it would go:

Hextall had suffered a first-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Game 6 of the series at the Spectrum. For Game 7, he would walk to the morning skate from the Flyers' hotel, a Hyatt. He would walk across the street and then up the hill to the Civic Arena, and if his knee felt OK, he would start in goal. If not, he wouldn't.

As it turned out, it was a hill too far and Hextall decided he couldn't play. Backup Ken Wregget, smoking cigarettes in the hallway outside the dressing room to try to calm himself down, started the deciding game and won, 4-1.

Nashville is hurting for goal scoring forwards. We've got those in abundance. Trade them for defensive players we require. I'm sure we could work something out after they just fired the coach. We've got Lupul, Bozak, that are good canidates for this along with a scoring forward in franson that might help them.
