@Tex19 @Ozma Totally agree. I tried to edit my post (but got in too late) so say that I didn't disagree with a single thing he's said up above. My comment is more of a "yes, and" rather than a "but".

I just went back and rewatched the last inning with the WEEI feed on, timed up, Dave O'Brien calling like a man on Death Row, like it was the last ballgame he might ever see. "What a miracle of a season," he said.

Denton, this piece is gorgeous but I have to say - you left out the moms. My dad taught me to play catch, how to swing a bat, what the infield fly rule is, but he doesn't have the heart to sit and watch the Sox night after night; he's a pragmatic guy, he remembers the '70s and '80s, he doesn't really keep the faith. My mama is the one up night after night, in her bathrobe, listening to Joe and Dave or watching on national TV when we can. She grew up in Shirley Centre in a family of girls, but damn if she doesn't love this team, love everything about them, their scruffiness, their dig-it-out runs, their complete ability to surprise and keep surprising. Dad taught me the game but Mom taught me to love it.

I live far far away from my folks, on another continent. Last night we had the Skype chat going at the same time as the game. Dad was off somewhere for the 9th. Mom was with me.

Don't leave out the moms, the aunties, the little old ladies. They probably never had a chance to learn from their dads in the 40s and 50s and 60s how to catch, throw, bat. They love it all the same. They learned to love it in a different way, but don't leave 'em out.

tl;dr love you mama.

Can we talk a little bit about David Ross? In my brain he is filling a Mike Lowell-shaped hole, and not just for the goatee - the presence, the optimism, the leadership. I'm a fan.

@alexis_b82 I keep asking myself this. She gets a suspiciously high number of "human interest" stories.

@VJ in Stuttgart @Ozma I'm only in the UK - not going to win any medals for distance! It's still too far for my liking, though. I Skype with my folks during the games and that helps.

Guys, for a Sox fan far from home, you made a great virtual living room (even though I didn't comment all that often). Huge thanks to Red and Denton for setting this up. Hope I'll be reading SG for years to come.

Evening! Lou Reed is dead, so while this game might conceivably suck, at least today can't get any worse.
