But the fact is most consumers have no idea about the technical specs of the things they buy.
I understand that I may have upset you but I'm just voicing my opinion, that great products sell well not the opposite whether it's a result in poor marketing or poor design.
IMO the Wii U has the potential to be a success if Nintendo were to revise the gamepad's design

@Wanderlei @jakrabbitBoth of the examples you gave have two things in common, physical appeal and worldwide success and at the end of the day that's all that matters when it comes to consumer products.
In short whether a consumer product is technically great or of the best quality doesn't matter if it has little to no physical appeal.
@ValeFalkren Yes negativity kills platforms, and now that more people are connected to each other through the internet that negativity spreads much quicker.
But I don't believe the cancelled games is what brought on the negativity but was more a result of the negativity.
One last thing imo Nintendo has not released a must have game since the Wii U's release.
@ValeFalkren I think the PS Vita is a good product but I think it was targeted at a declining market and mature audience which didn't help it's prospects for success.
@Wanderleithe dream cast was a good product but Sega had pretty much become obsolete during the N64 and PS days after all their failed products they just didn't have the money to reestablish their brand with the dream cast a problem Nintendo doesn't have at the moment.
These days, sales of most products rely heavily on physical appeal something the Wii U is lacking imo.
Arrogance and confidence are often mistaken and I think Nintendo were brimming with arrogance after the industry surprising success of the Wii.
The reason I believe they were brimming with arrogance before the Wii U is that one can build successfully on confidence but arrogance always leads to failure.

I personally find these VC games overpriced. Most (new) indie games are priced far better.
I'm hoping Nintendo will change their pricing policy someday soon.

I'm just frustrated with their attitude toward the western market I mean how many 1st party western studios do Nintendo have? Correct me if I'm wrong but Retro Studios is the only 1st party Western studio Nintendo have and they only work on Nintendo IP's.

While I think it might be possible that Microsoft drops the Xbox business if the XB1 under performs.To me the PS4 and XB1 are hardware locked PC's with entertainment focused OS's, so I think Microsoft would of been better off approaching the gaming market more like Valve with their Steam OS.

To me DKC:TF is like the majority of current 1st party Wii U games are just replicating
experiences from games that Nintendo have already released on the 3DS
and Wii. Which is not normally a bad thing but when your trying to push console sales you want to games that offer unique experiences.

Starfox, using the gamepad as a second screen tailgunner for co-op single player and multiplayer. Or an original FPS game that isn't metriod, love metriod but nintendo are very restrictive with there IP's when it comes to mature content.

I personally think the reason the wii u isn't getting the sales number is that most people are not liking the big controller so their isn't really any game that can change that, however if nintendo decided to redesign it, that could have a positive effect on sales. Asthetics is one of the most important things when designing any consumer product which nintendo seem to forget sometimes remember the purple lunch box "GameCube" and the various other failed or poorly selling consoles that had large conrollers.

@maneauleau @jakrabbit Well I can't answer that but we will see what happens with regards to the Wii U sales over the next couple months.
I personally can't see there being a significant sales boost for Wii U this holidays. I think most parents will see better value in an Xbox1 or PS4 purchase for their children as the features they both offer appeal to adults as well, so many parents will get some use out of a present "meant" for their children.

@maneauleau @jakrabbit That's a valid point. But I'm just going by what see here in Australia, as parents here used to buy their kids Nintendo products but that has changed to iPads. I believe in the past that the majority of parents purchased Nintendo products at the request of their children maybe that has changed but I doubt it.
It's going to be interesting to see how Nintendo's Wii U sales go over the next couple of months, considering they will be targeting the casual market, which to me looks like has moved on to tablets and smartphones for the most part.
Nintendo seem to have a hard time making open world platformers, so here's an idea on how to make an open world platformer. Make each "stage" almost vertical rising out of the hub/world and in order to complete each stage/tower it would require you to get to the top. It'd be pretty hard for anyone to get lost. I think Game Devs seem to be lacking creativity these days.

@XCWarrior1 @jakrabbit A price of $200~250 was possible for Wii U but it would have been lacking the game pad, a design/planning stage error.
I actually know about the Wii U games that are out and that are in development but most games they put out thus far have failed to give a compelling argument for a touch screen controller.
Also on the subject of games is that Nintendo are lacking in two popular genre's sports and fps's.
GameCube had MK and Smash as well as better 3rd party support but still sold poorly. On the other hand the console did look like a kids lunch box (a very poor design choice) so I guess the Wii U has that going for it
But I'd say the biggest problem is that Nintendo are seen as a kids game company, I know that puts off certain customers. There is a way for them to fix this though IMO they should separate the hardware division and call it NTS (Nintendo Technical Systems) or something and label all their products as such and launch a new product (maybe a smartphone/game device) to establish the new name as a consumer electronics company that makes gaming devices. This is a rather painless way for them to change their image.

Oh and and i meant 6 million sales from launch till March 2014, not financial year sales and of course if this happens 3rd party support will drop completely. The only question would be does Nintendo discontinue the Wii U if they fail to meet their sales projections? I reckon they would have a hard time turning a profit on the AAA games they have in production, plus selling the Wii U for a profit won't likely happen till 2015
What I have seen from Nintendo in regards to the Wii U from it's inception to it's release has been incompetent.
Price point, should have been $200~$250 similar to Wii launch price.
Name, stick to the numbering system it's clear and can't be confused.
Games, you would think they'd learnt with the 3DS also ignoring the FPS genre (for first party development) currently the most popular genre and on a side note they don't have to be violent.
I really like Nintendo as a company but hate how they are squandering so much potential.
This is the situation i saw coming back at the E3 Nintendo Direct I'm sure many others saw it coming to.
Even 6 million by march would be a bit of a stretch with the game titles they are planing on driving Wii U sales with.
I don't think Nintendo's dialog writing abilities are up to scratch in the Zelda games for them to attempt voice acting.

@o1striker The point i was trying to get at, is they (Nintendo) should of realized when Xenoblade was released to critical acclaim that the folks over at monolith soft are one of their top tier developers. And in return should of made an effort to get their next game on the Wii U in it's first year on the market.

I think Emily hit the nail on the head with this article, I fully expect there to be less 3rd party support then there was this year due to low 3rd party software sales. Though to a lesser extent, imo that hinges on whether 3rd party devs see decent sales on the PS4 and Xbox1.

Nice article something i think Nintendo would be stupid to ignore. But i think a much deeper problem at Nintendo is that they should of have established at least three big first party western development studios by now, with there own original IP's.
I really don't understand how Sony knew this years ago but Nintendo on the other hand seems to be very japan dedicated, when it comes to investing in new studios/IP's .

Yeah I was hoping they would return to form and make a game that had adventure as one of it's core elements.
I also am wishing they expand on the whole day/night thing, making it a requirement for Link to sleep in order to refresh his stamina but mainly as a way to enter Links dream state or subconscious (to battle a new foe who has power over dreams) in which could allow for game designers to add more variety to the game play.
Monolith's X should have been the game to help Wii U sales this year.

@jholden3249 @jakrabbityeah there are plenty of "not so bright" consumers, but are they really any dumber than they were when Nintendo released the Wii?
Nintendo has obviously had some real problems with the Wii U, They clearly launched it before they were ready. My guess is they had so much trouble learning to develop for it but knew they didn't have much time before MS and Sony launched their new machines so they opted to put out NSMB U as launch tittle which is mostly a port from the Wii with new features and then there was the game drought.
This is why staying up to date with technology is so important for any big publisher or developer, now Nintendo are hurting because of it and there's no one to blame but themselves. The way i see it now is if the Wii U flops then that would a positive for the company as they became overconfident after the success of the Wii
I just wish Nintendo would realize that it’s the innovation in their games and not their hardware that has keep them going this long. I'm not suggesting they software only but that they should go for a more western style approach "the most bang for your buck" and let their soft ware sell the systems.
And just in case your wondering i did own Wii U for a short period.

Having to waste marketing money to explain what your console/product is, is a sign of a poorly conceived/designed product.
The money is better spent re branding it rather than wasting time explaining what it is.
