@TheCanucksnaphook How 'bout No, Scott
@Burtonboy There's not exactly stiff competition for the second-line winger position. He may have more skill than any of the competitors, but, as it should, being defensively responsible and having a complete game will be considered.Most teams who are trying to win don't like to play through rookie mistakes. So my guess would be starts the season with the Marlies or Sweden. If Marlies (my hope), he can get call-ups for injuries.
@Burtonboy I think it was in interview of an AGM from here, but he basically said "we don't make the decision really, the player makes it for us".
@Mcost61 Second line right-winger? For nine games? Marlies centre? Back to Sweden?
@djamon @Mcost61 Seems like pretty out-of-context numbers. But i am saying that Holland could potentially be a success on the top line.
Thing is, Bozak is pretty polished, especially on the defensive side. By polished, i mean he knows the safe play to make and (tries) to make it. He does really well to play to his limitations. Even though his rookie year he was way more radical in what he tried, he's somewhat accepted the finer details (at the expense of growing his skill set imo).I think Holland does not yet have that polish for the finer details, and is prone to mistakes which in the pros will dearly cost you. But, i do see potential in him..
@Mcost61 but more importantly, do you see Holland potentially having (more) success if he played with Kessel and JVR?
@Mcost61 @Reversethecurse13 Yes, but last year the team was winning many games despite being outshot (and outplayed) heavily. I remember Wilson used to bring out the blender. I don't think any player (except Crosby apparently) should have a right to playing with another player he expects.
I sure hope Carlyle is compelled to stick to his guns less. We saw it with Franson (paired with Ph9) on the PP. But i also wish he had tried Kadri at least a few more times last year. Despite the fact that when Bozak (and Bolland) were injured Kadri played there and it looked even more vulnerable defensively.And this year i really hope both Kadri and Holland get a decent shot at playing up top. But i swear RC keeps Bozak there only for his faceoffs.
@Xxxxxnew I'm thinking 10 goals and 15 assists by the half-way mark playing with Kadri and Lupul

@Hmmm my hope for opening night roster:Lupul - Kadri - FrattinKomarov - Holland - ClarksonBooth - Santorelli - Winnikxtra: Kontiola, Bodie, Ashton
@Hmmm Lots of options. But we saw that 1) playing Clarkson with Kadri and Lupul was dragging the line down, and 2) that the combo was kept together or tried often.Carlyle: gives Clarkson a failing role on a line + no PP timeMe: put him with players of his ilk + 2PP timereally hoping that this does not repeat itself
@Hmmm @Reversethecurse13 Yes, but that would then have Holland playing with Komarov and Winnik. Which i think is a waste of his offensive potential.I think Holland can outplay anyone but Kadri and Bozak, i just hope he gets that honest shot.
@Xxxxxnew My mistake, i had his page open and glossed over it.Admittedly, his AHL numbers are good. I think the question will be his skating (pace). Can he do what he does to get points at a higher speed, which will be demanded in the NHL.I see Booth and Santorelli (and Frattin) as much better skaters.
@Hmmm @Reversethecurse13 A right-handed shot (so you'd think would give him an advantage over Booth).i wouldn't hate it (because i'm not sure if he has enough skill to play with Kadri and Lupul), but i would like the fact that this would probably give Holland more at centre.
@Hmmm @Reversethecurse13 because the likelihood a player who has never to play in the NHL to be able to come in is not very likely. Obviously his skill and place will become quickly evident to the coaches in training camp. I'm just guessing that he won't be good enough to play top 6, let alone on the opening night roster (provided full health).
@Hmmm @Reversethecurse13 I would add him under "my worry"
My hope: FrattinMy worry: Clarkson, Santorelli
Wild-cards: Booth, Komarov
@Xxxxxnew -Gardiner's ice time stands out there to me. Hard to believe he doesn't start opening night on the top pair with Ph9.
Okay so who plays 2RW on opening night (assuming all players are healthy)?
@Bruffins JVR - Steve Nash - Kessel
@Savo43 basically. It's pretty funny to see pundits and fans just "guesstimate" a lottery position or out of playoffs.There's probably equal chance of lottery as there is of winning the conference.Last year the stars had to align just for us to pick that high.
@Anthony Petrielli not sure i'd be slotting Kontiola into the 2W position, seems pretty hasty.I do think it's up in the air who plays with Kadri and Lupul, but there seem to be several options. Best could be argued for Santorelli, Frattin, and even Leivo.Clarkson failed when playing with those two, so you have to consider (rationally) that he wouldn't be a fit, but RC showed he tried to force-feed that last year.
Ashton's fate seems to be in his own hands. He has the size and skating, but has yet to show he can produce points and has appeared a step behind mentally. I'm guessing they want another solid C option after Boz-Kad-Holl, and atm only Santorelli fits that bill, unless Komorov can show he could handle that. The question amounts to who plays 4C...i guess Holland will be given those 10-12 minutes.So i'm guessing:JVR-Boz-KessLupul - Kadri - FrattinKomarov - Santorelli - ClarksonAshton - Holland - Kontiola/Bodie
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Troy Bodie re-signed to one-year deal by the Maple Leafs
@RandomScrub @Reversethecurse13 Ah, so Anthony used him in his model as 2W...well, wouldn't be the first time he's wrong ;)
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Mike Santorelli signed by the Maple Leafs to 1-year, $1.5 million contract
So who is this new Kont and why do we think he'll play on the 2nd line ahead of guys like Frattin, Leivo, Clarkson, Santorelli....
@Gilbey93 @Reversethecurse13 frankly i wouldn't be surprised to see Ashton traded.Nonis talked about how Broll and Devane may/would fill in as "tough guys" this season.
@RandomScrub @Gilbey93 so is Santorelli playing W or C. if wing, that will prob be pretty close to the lineup
@Gilbey93 that battle for 2RW is big: Clarkson, Frattin, Ashton, Leivodon't think Ashton will win that one out
@Xxxxxnew @Reversethecurse13 "being on the ice"
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Maple Leafs submit an offer to David Legwand
@Anthony Petrielli @Reversethecurse13 sounds good to me. just hope they concentrate on resources and money to centres first
@Anthony Petrielli Nonis is probably not looking at getting a top 6 winger. Sounded like it may be an open spot in camp to battle, for players like Clarkson, Ashton, or, as he mentioned, Josh Leivo!!
@Jmessih weird, his name reminded me of playing this song on the piano as a kidhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMFeGE2Vzxs
@peterbleafs @Reversethecurse13 mmm, well in the context they were essentially talking about the failures of the bottom six last year: the point was made that a) they did not contribute enough points, and b)they didn't provide enough minutes.But, he defended Carlyle by saying "the coach needs the players he feels comfortable playing 3rd or 4th line minutes." He was trying to justify Carlyle by saying our failures on the bottom 6 were because he didn't have the players. Which is a complete farce, because the players he chose to use, from the Orr's and FML's and Smithsons, there were much better options who were getting overlooked, like the Hollands, Ashtons, D'Amigo's..
"those players HAVE to contribute and provide you with minutes."
Great interview with Nonis on Leaf lunch today.-made the (painfully obvious) point about needing lines 3 and 4 to contribute more, but 'defended' Carlyle by saying its his job to get players the coach feels comfortable using in all situations.-said Franson really struggled last year, "alot because of injury and circumstance"-talked about Marlies who will potentially contribute next year: first name he said (with passion) was Josh Leivo. Also mentioned how the "toughness" role will be filled by Marlies like Broll. Mentioned Granberg and Percy as players...
So basically, we can expect a 3C or 4C either through FA or by trade in the coming days/months....imo, not a good enough appraisal of our centre situation

@Jordan29 only Friedman asks good ?'s....BobMcown sometimes too
@Murph2417 *said he wouldn't
my god Johnston, what kind of question is "set the scene for us when you visited Leo in Finland."
Nonis: we have more work to do
@ShiftyD @Reversethecurse13 @RandomScrub Are you dense? Telling someone to fuck off isn't some kind of personal attack.
@lukethenuke worth every penny
@RandomScrub @ShiftyD rules have been made very clear, especially for the hard heads who dont understand the general point of the matter.
@jiggerific fuck off
@CanuckUKinToronto @Reversethecurse13 lol, so you're going to ignore Shanny's explicit comments that we want Bolland back, and nonis said himself he wanted to sign him, but the money didn't make sense...so...
@CanuckUKinToronto well, we're not exactly convinced, considering he thought Bolland at 5 years was going to be a good solution....
@The_Polish_Cannon @Reversethecurse13 if it was 24th overall...If, as you say, nobody trades 1C's anymore, then we might as well trade the lot of them and rebuild through the draft, because the team will be spinning wheels with such mediocre centres..Grabbing a guy like Stastny would have been ideal. But, i'm hoping Nonis does think that he needs to upgrade our centres overall, and just didn't want to make it known publicly...
@The_Polish_Cannon @Reversethecurse13 lol, you think the returns for Kesler and Spezza deserves a description such as "all their young assets?!"Neither Anaheim or Dallas traded anything of significance for either player.
@Bon Scott was a Leaf fan lets hope so...
