I've been a fan of hers since Save the Last Dance. I love her versatility. If you've seen her in Life is Hot in Cracktown, you see her range as an actress. Her being beautiful and classy definitely helps negate certain stereotypes.
Yes! Thank you for explaining... I was wondering why she would do a movie like that.
Like the racist comments made on Youtube on videos made by Black artists, I often wonder why comment? Why not just skip over it if you are so bitter, miserable and filled with disgust? It doesn't make much sense to me but I guess it takes all kinds.
Very true, Essence (or excuse me (M)Essence-teehee) hasn't been the same for many years... This particular issue has a lot of stuff (besides lovely Miss Monae) that you might like. Which was a shocker for me. I stopped buying because... The range of women that read it probably ran the gamut from well to do to moving up and so on. But they always had the most expensive clothes featured. Meanwhile, I would pick up Glamour and it would feature stuff for all budgets. We all want quality. But, mix it up. Just a side rant!
I don't listen to the radio at all. The same six songs being played by the same tired artists isn't my thing. Plus, I listen to everything so, I have to switch stations to get my fix. I love Pandora, Last FM, my own ipod etc... I do love Janelle Monae. Her style, her voice... Refreshing to say the least. I picked up the Essence with her on the cover after not reading it for a very long time. She's a beautiful young woman. I love when people don't conform and stay true to themselves. Hence, the reason she isn't bigger. I saw both her and Erykah at Afro Punk. I wasn't disappointed.
I just bought a pair of oxfords. In almost the same color as the ones featured. Needless to say, I'm in love.
She is beautiful. They look great together.
I saw a small portion of this story before. There are always signs. Sometimes you don't connect them to what comes later but, there are always signs. I do think there are women out there who, I don't know? For whatever reason don't want to see them.
Um, did the man narrating the tale say "sprung"?
@The Working Home Keeper I keep the books I'll never donate, or give away in the book case. I know people who love turning the pages etc. My mom used to read to me when I was little. She got me my first library card around that same time. I guess physical books reminds me of that a little too.
@ChristieRJohnson I was actually trying to respond at work but couldn't... Must have been the Gods warning me to not be online! Anyways, I always wondered what "looking Black" entails as well.
I don't know. I can remember when Wendy Williams went from one radio station to the to the other years ago.If any of you live in NY and listened,I'm sure you remember too. She's said waaaaaayyyyyy worse. There were a people threatening her on air. Some people love the drama, and "insider" gossip she brings. Side note, how adorable is Tatyana Ali???
@MySmile I really should start reading the comments first! One of mine started out exactly like yours!
@Toni_M I've always hated the notion that if you muttered the slightest thing about someone you were "hatin'". God forbid you weren't a sheep and made a valid point. Anywho,Oasis!!! Loved them back in the day! I thought they broke up because the two brothers Liam and? Noel maybe? Couldn't stop fighting? Go figure they were talking trash too... And too late! The Beyhive started in on Keyshia Cole already!
@MySmile I do too. Like when she said Viola's gorgeous natural hair "didn't belong on the red carpet."
@The Working Home Keeper I don't think she meant there was anything wrong with dark skinned women either.
I am a little confused. There are supposed to be what? Allegedly 26 shades of black from lightest light to ebony. All those shades can be in one family. Being lighter complected doesn't automatically mean you are biracial or "mixed". I don't get the concept of "not identifying". I get not wanting to be pigeon holed. In many areas of life (profession included), you just may be. But whatever. People do what they want to do. The purpose of the post (at least what I got from it) was her saying that her complexion was more "international" when you have ladies like Naomi Campbell and Beverly Johnson who were "international" for years. She misspoke and made an ignorant comment.
