"Now it has all come crashing down for Horowitz. However, both Page Six and CNN reportthat he’ll have to be paid for the remainder of his contract which is in the neighborhood of $3 million."

By definition, if someone is giving you $3 million (especially for not working), nothing is crashing down on you.

SB Nation could have handled it better. Since the news was going to get out anyway -- whether they broke it or not -- they should have just broken the story, and then added a caveat that they strongly disagree with the NCAA's rules on this matter. Ignoring the story did nothing to advance the cause of athletes getting paid, if that truly was their intent.

Perhaps they didn't believe there was enough validity to the story ... and now they're saying they decided not to run the story on some moral high ground. Who knows. But I'm not going to praise SB Nation for the way they handled it.

You gotta admit Florio has a great point here though:

"McShay and those of his ilk routinely put ideas in the heads of players that have no relevance to what NFL teams actually think.  Soon, McShay undoubtedly will unveil his incredibly-too-premature list of the top players for 2015, and he’ll include in that list — you guessed it — underclassmen.

Last year, McShay put Tennessee offensive lineman Antonio Richardson at No. 16 on the top 32 players for the 2014 draft.  Inevitably, Richardson gave up his final year of eligibility at Tennessee to enter the draft.  And Richardson wasn’t drafted.

Ditto for Florida cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy.  Ranked at No. 19 last year by McShay, Purifoy left school early for the draft.  And Purifoy wasn’t drafted.

Then there’s LSU defensive tackle Anthony Johnson.  He was No. 22 on McShay’s top-32 list last May.  Johnson left school early to enter the draft.  And Johnson wasn’t drafted."

Sideline reporters can't win. Ask a softball: "She's a floozy; why is she allowed on a football field?" Ask a tough question: "Who does this broad think she is asking a hardball question like that? Even though it's a question that EVERY COLLEGE FOOTBALL FAN has been wondering themselves. The nerve of this girl."

The media is accused (and rightfully so) of burying its collective heads in the sand during the "Steroid Era" when it was obvious guys like McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, et al were using, but no one wanted to rock the boat. But when someone calls a spade a spade -- says it's obvious Pujols is/was on roids -- he gets ridiculed and then sued. I have no doubt Clark will "win" the lawsuit because Pujols' lawyers won't be able to prove malicious intent. Especially since it's a common opinion in the baseball world that Pujols was an obvious user. But just the fact that Jack Clark is being painted as some evil guy here is funny to me. I can't think of a more-obvious PED user than Albert Pujols. Unfortunately for the Angels, it looks like he stopped using after getting that monster contract. No question he was using in St. Louis though.

IMO, they were letting him down easy. It's much-more comfortable to fire someone and say "Hey, the ratings are low, we have to make a change" instead of "You really suck and we need to find someone to replace you who can avoid sucking."

This makes it seem like it might have been more "bad luck" rather than someone being incompetent. Just my take. It's not like FoxSports came out and said that was the reason they were letting him go. It's what he said was told to him when he was let go.

Also, isn't "hockey" and "low ratings" synonymous? I'm confused.

Thanks Shaun. I will have to double-check on Francisco because I thought he still had an option left and could begin at Louisville this season. Chapman could be huge. Is he just a side show, or is he really going to break out as a star? Something interesting about him is he didn't start pitching until he was 16. He was a first baseman before that. We already knew he was raw, but he's even rawer (is that a word?) than we thought.
