Shocked the hell out of me. Wonder if he was POed at the Big10 for not taking action against Urban Meyer? Just goes to show you never know who may be courting your coach.

Just to give a little impetus to Sharp's tune about Sexton...

Great update to a great story Sharp. I really enjoyed it. And the research you and Jacob have done is, to say the least, astonishing. Your documentation is undeniably convincing. Maybe the "official" version according to the UofA will someday be updated to reflect the earlier "unofficial" version according to the those newspaper article dates. And thanks for your work.

Is Sharp Tusk still with HogDB?
Did you notice how much older the DADS looked back in '64? It looked more like Granddad's Day.

By the way Sharp, that was a hellava article. Great history there. Maybe the KU baseball team in 1907 (the year before Bezdek arrived at Fayetteville) or their media was trying to poke fun at those wild hogs from Arkansas. All the historic photos I have from 1907 are captioned as: 1907 Cardinals First Team, or 1907 Cardinals Second Team.
2 years, 9 months ago on "The Razorbacks" Came Before Bezdek as Early as 1905
And the version of how it happened according to someone who was actually there when it first happened. And it wasn't in Memphis, but it may have happened (AGAIN) in Fayetteville. But here is the version I believe.
How the University of Arkansas Athletic Teams
REALLY Came By the Nickname of Razorbacks
As told by Philip Huntley to Jim Bailey in his and
Orville Henry’s book, The Razorbacks A Story of
“He was a driver,” said the late Phil C. Huntley, who at 88 in 1973 was the only living member of Bezdek’s undefeated 1909 football team. “Playing the other team on Saturday was the easiest thing we did all week.”
“He coached everything,” Huntley said of Bezdek. “Football---great success. Baseball---great success. He tried to get track started. He was all things to all men. He understood the importance of placing his program in front of the public. He had cards printed and distributed in towns like Rogers, Springdale, and Fort Smith advertising his home games. It was the first advertising the school did.”
He would be important now even if he had been less successful. It was Bezdek who changed the team from Cardinals to Razorbacks.
“We were on a trip in Texas, getting off the train for a stroll---I think in Dallas,” said Huntley, Bezdek’s center from 1908 through 1911 and his graduate aide in 1912. “Somebody yelled,
'here come the hogs.' See, there were a lot of jokes about Arkansas at that time.
“Bezdek stopped and thought a minute. He said, 'Hmmm, boys, I like that. We’re the Razorbacks from now on.' I’ve heard and read a lot of ways it was supposed to have come about, but that’s how it really was. It took a year or two for it to catch on with everybody, but it started right there.”
You may consider that erroneous bit of the column SMALL. I don't. It was not a SMALL thing. It was an INCORRECT claim made by a would-be author concerning your own description of "an Important topic". As such it should have never made it to print. You may want to consider an of edit these articles before they are allowed to be blogged...otherwise you are inviting comments such as mine and a defense of "baiting a troll". Huh uh, that ain't the way it works. Especially when another blog is mentioned as the reason for the rebuttal.

Wow Sharp! You be boggling this old man's mind. But I'm looking forward to the end results.

The overall issue with my posts is the fact that you don't know what the hell you are talking about. Try cracking on that. The first thing you do as a pundit is to make sure you know whatever you put down on a piece of paper or an internet forum, blog, magazine or wherever is factually correct. YOU FAIL BADLY. And then try to explain your way out of your lack of knowledge with some lame troll comment.

Trolling you? BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA choke, spit.
Holy crap, junior. You make a mistake like that and try to wiggle out of looking like the moron you obviously are by claiming to bait a troller? Geeesus. I take that back Pigslop. You don't quite measure up to the moronic level. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
USE YOUR HANDY DANDY REFERENCES . And please don't claim that you actually have a degree in anything from the University of Arkansas. That is just too embarrassing to the state university.
Quote from Hogtrough article:
"You may call it a war on our tradition or whatever. We were originally called the Cardinals, we used to play all games in LR, we change the style of our helmets, etc. Tradition changes. Keep up or be left out."
Where did you hear or read that the Cardinals/Razorbacks "used to play all games in LR"? Good golly Hogtrough. Would you use hogdb.com (this very website) to verify some of the idiotic things you type...before hitting that post button? The Hogs NEVER EVER played all games in LR. Never.
I think with this reply ^^^ I will rest my case.
No I'm not "banned" again Wiz. Out there among the politics of the moderators, admins and the OWNER (a TEXAS LONGHORN fan by the way who also happens to be a media whore) which carried over to the other forums, the usual influx of juvenile posters who can't find the location of their own asses and your W&P posts, I simply resigned. I had enough. Finished with Hogville. Done. Over. Never again.Terminated. Ended. History.
Sharp wrote a terrific article up there, Wiz. And the kettle (you) called the pot black. Get over it. Sharp Tusk is the BEST disseminator of Razorback information around, now that Orville is no longer with us.
3 years, 2 months ago on NCAA Should Investigate Dennis Dodd Report
Speaking of overwriting...Wiz, your War and Peace epics on Hogville are, to quote a certain Hogvillian, "way, way, way over-written". Sharp, that article was much more professional than that Missouri gimp, Dennis Dodd's half-ass version that attempted to de-rail what most "experts" consider a lock for the Razorbacks.
Great article Sharp Tusk and I, for one, felt the impact and the credibility was all there.
Shawn, I've never heard your program with Wally Hall but I read a lot about you on various forum boards. I hope your outcome is 100% successful. Go Hogs.

At one point in the late 70s / early 80s the Hogs were as high as 12 or 13 in the all-time average of AP polls, but the years 1992 thru 2008 dropped that average to around 18 or so. Still in the top 20 but not nearly as high as it had been. Look for Bobby Petrino to get us back to our rightful place.

@HogDatabase Hey, Jacob! How's it hanging?
3 years, 3 months ago on Arkansas/AState Revisited: "Tradition"
@Hogtrough Arkansas has 8 rivalry games. They are with SEC schools. But with YOUR IQ level and writing skills one can't determine what YOUR definition of a rivalry game is. You surely don't have rivalry games with teams that play on the level of Arkansas - Monticello, Ouachita, Henderson, Hendrix, UCA (formerly Arkansas State Normal School, then Arkansas State Teachers College, then State College of Arkansas) or.................ARKANSAS STATE at Jonesboro. Get over it sonny. It ain't gonna happen.
Hogtrough, I don't know how to address you except for maybe young timer, or teenager, or maybe know nothing but here is the response to your laziness about " finding you the research for playing any college team in-state".Which is certainly ridiculous that you apparently are too lazy to do your own research on the very web-site you linked.
I'll give you the colleges, but you'll have to check hogdb.com for yourself. Per hogdb. the Razorbacks have played the following:
Arkansas-Monticello record 1 win 1 loss in 1943 and 1944 that would be during WWII
Central Arkansas record 2 wins 0 losses 1923 and 1926
Henderson State record 6 wins 0 losses between 1908 and 1929
Hendrix record 15 wins 0 losses 2 ties between 1911-1933
Ouachita record 6 wins 0 losses 2 ties between 1897 - 1923
Now about Nebraska...Creighton hasn't fielded a football team in a number of years. They don't ever show up on http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/ . That would be in Div I, II, III, or NAIA. But Nebraska played a number of small Nebraska colleges back in the 1890s, 1900 thru the 1930s - 40s including Creighton when they actually had a team. But if you look hard enough you will see that Nebraska was just like Arkansas in playing other STATE SCHOOLS in modern times. THEY DIDN'T.
Son, you've all this history of college football at your fingertip here at hogdb. I suggest you use it before making an ass of yourself.
Hogtrough, maybe its just the terminology you are using BUT Nebraska has NO INSTATE rival. As far as Arkansas (the University) having two home fields...NO the Razorbacks have one HOME FIELD (Reynolds Razorback Stadium) and a Public Stadium belonging to the City of Little Rock in Little Rock, AR. A stadium where the University tried to end playing annual games there several years ago but were coerced, forced, and threatened by central Arkansans if that, in fact, happened. That's when the University agreed to continue playing at a minimum, two games per year in the run down antique known as War Memorial Stadium, against their better wishes.
There is a financial reason that the UofA refuses to play Arkansas State, UCA or any other in state school. And by now you should be WELL AWARE of it. The UofA doesn't dole out charitable contributions to schools to which they recruit against. But to say and I quote: "Arkansas is only college who hasn’t played an in-state rivalry in football." is totally incorrect. The UofA played other in state colleges in several sports back as recently as the 1930s and even years before that played Fort Smith High School and other secondary schools.
Please get your facts straight Hogtrough. We (the University of Arkansas) do not need to legitimize other in-state programs by playing them and then recruiting against them. We just need to "protect" our turf.
