@gunnerfrog How do these games factor into the regular 82 game season? Questions about the number of games each team plays and player fatigue would surely have to be answered as well.

The good thing about it only being a one year contract is that it will be just enough games to open the average fans eyes as to how bad TNF is and then we can try to get rid of it the following year.

Mike Fratello would be my first choice. Second Choice would be to move Reggie Miller up the ladder and give the second spot to a new analyst. Wouldn't want to give either spot to Barkley. That just seems like a horrible idea. Hill (at least IMO) strikes me as being too bland. Chris Webber would be a decent and logical choice, but he always seemed more comfortable as a studio analyst. Hated when they broke up him and GP on NBATV.

Now this is a bit of a leap like you said, but I absolutely love the idea of TNT hiring Steve Nash. Maybe not as lead analyst, but I could definitely see him getting the number 2 spot if Miller moves up. That said I could also see Nash choosing to go the coaching route.

If you look a Johnson's resume he honed his craft calling basketball games. That's where he flourishes. He's a good enough announcer that he can cover football, but he's out of his element when he calls soccer. At some point Fox needs to stop forcing this. Surely they have someone better. He may not be as well known as Johnson, but people are more than willing to get behind good announcers.

@MarioCardone  I think you're being too reactionary by basing everything on Woodson and Jackson. Woodson being a "rogue" coach (whatever that means) and Jackson using the triangle when he coached. Like every vacant position (NBA or otherwise) you're gonna interview a bunch of candidates and pick the best one, or at least that's how it should be done. What you're ultimately looking for is someone whose style fits the current roster, or the willingness of the GM to go after players that fit the coaches style. Jackson is only the evaluator of talent and Woodson really has no bearing whatsoever on who they hire. IMO I think they just need to hire the best person available regardless of them running the triangle or not.

@CUbsfan @stuie299  I have no problem with Ernie Johnson and Steve Smith because they do their jobs well (Grant Hill of course being too new to judge). I have a problem with Kenny and Charles. Its ridiculous to think that NBA analysts who watch NBA games all year are gonna suddenly be able to comment on College teams. To make matters worse they insist on pairing Kenny and Charles with Greg Gumbel who have zero chemistry. Gumbel never knows how to handle their off the cuff remarks as he is much better at doing a straightforward type of show. It really has nothing to do with that deal between CBS/Turner either. Turner just doesn't cover enough CBB games to warrant hiring better CBB analysts. So if they're having problems putting together team specific broadcasts , i'd much rather have them save the money, and hire better CBB analysts next year. Its been what 4 years now. I would have expected some of these problems to be worked out.

I'm thankful that I've found a site like AA. A site that allows fans to discuss how sports are being broadcasted. Not just announcing gaffes but also important business decisions among networks and rule changes.

What's the deal with the first 2 Battle 4 Atlantis games being on AXS TV. I didn't even know they broadcast live sports. I thought NBCSN had the rights to that tournament. Did they really choose to broadcast some outdoor programs instead of quality live sports. If that's the case then I'm in complete shock.

I much rather have Turner improve their roster of CBB analysts than bring in people specifically for the semifinal games. Ernie Johnson, Marv Albert, and Steve Kerr are about the only good analysts/announcers from TNT.  Finding people to replace Kenny and Charles seems more important to me. I also think it hurts that Greg Gumbel is always paired with Kenny and Charles. The chemistry is just off between them, especially when Charles makes candid jokes.

@sir boxington There's a huge difference between the two. ESPN is simply talking about their original programing and not their live sports. Most people still watch live sports in real time so you can't make the same claim.

I have a very simple solution for TNF. The two teams playing on TNF should be coming out of their bye week. I think that would drastically improve the quality of the games.

As a huge comedy nerd I can tolerate a lack of actual sports coverage just to see how this turns out. That said I'm not the average person, and I don't think the average person is gonna be down with this. So in that regard I agree it seems like a total misstep.

Admittedly I watch Around The Horn and PTI (more so Around The Horn) but that's largely because The Crowd Goes wild sucks. I was willing and ready to try out FS1 but they just can't compete. That said I actually like Fox Sports Live much better than Sports Center. They just need to do a better job on the original programing front.

If she doesn't get steamrolled by Simmons then I think she'll be perfect. That said I think there is a strong chance she'll get steamrolled by Simmons. But honestly, I don't think they need her. Let Doris Burke be the host (kinda like Ernie Johnson who every now and then gives his opinion). Simmons can speak his mind not caring if he makes waves. Doug Collins can give some great analysis. All they need is a complementary former player to round it out. They'll probably use Jalen Rose, but I think they can find someone better.

9 months, 1 week ago on Sage Steele would be perfect for ESPN NBA Countdown

I'm sad to Wilbon go but glad to see Magic Johnson leave. BIll Simmons seems to do a lot better when he doesn't have to constantly bow down to Magic. He was basically the best part of ESPN's draft coverage. In fact he made it worth watching. Magic Johnson is unengaging in every way and like I said people seem to agree with him too much. I wish they would run a lineup of Bill Simmons, Doug Collins/George Karl, Michael Wilbon, and a former player. The only problem is all of ESPN's former NBA players are terrible analysts (at least IMO).

@clicksnhisses @stuie299 @cheesesteaks3 But usually if they already work for a network its easier for them to switch. I mean Bill Raftery just up and joined Fox when they acquired the Big East broadcasting rights. I'm sure it would be easier for someone already working for the Fox.

CBSSN is only behind FS1 and NBCSN because its stuck behind an extremely unnecessary pay wall. On Verizon and Comcast its not apart of any sports package and has to be paid for like a premium channel. This Time Warner deal is gonna be huge for CBSSN. I can only hope it prompts other cable companies to do the same, because there really is no reason it should be treated differently than ESPN, FS1, or NBCSN.  I get all of those channels and I'm on a lower level package.

I don't think we necessarily need a la carte because the prices will just be too high in some cases. I just think cable companies need to be smarter with their packaging. We should be able to get X number of channels,  of our choosing, for X amount of money. It might vary slightly depending on what channels one chooses but that would be a much better way of doing it. More of a mix of packages and a la carte.

The problem is they need some good live sports to draw in viewers. While I understand why they're pushing Nascar I just don't think enough people ultimately care about it to draw in necessary viewers. In a couple of years once they get quality live sports things should turn around. By then they will also have had enough time to work out any kinks with their original programing.

ideally this is how things would play out (well as realistically as possible). Fox and Turner would make large bids and carve out a huge chunk of games. Turner would get Thursday Showcase and Monday/Saturday games. Fox would then get Wednesday/Friday games. ABC determined to maintain ties with the NBA would keep their Sunday games. Lastly NBATV not wanting to give up all of their broadcast rights would keep their popular Tuesday Fan night. The playoffs would then be divided as so. Fox and ESPN would split the Western Conference games with ESPN getting the Western Conference Finals in even number years and Fox getting them in odd number years. TNT would then get all of the Eastern Conference games. TNT would also partner with CBS to broadcast the Finals similar to their NCAA deal. Then the finals would rotate yearly (like the Superbowl) between all 3 networks.
