I believe Arkansas and Oklahoma had a regularly-scheduled non-conference game set for 2013-2014 anyway. It's not officially a part of the challenge, but I believe it was already on the schedule.
The Hogs will be in the Dance. Probably not top 25, but dancing. Missouri, Alabama, or LSU will take the 5th spot, maybe the 6th as well. South Carolina and Vanderbilt should be improved and Ole Miss won't drop off too much with Henderson coming back.
RIP Pat Summerall. Absolute legend.
Learned yesterday that his real name wasn't Pat, he got that nickname when the box score read "PAT Summerall" after every extra point he kicked.
I'd really like to see a tougher road schedule than this:
at #9 LSU
at #7 Florida
at #1 Alabama
at Ole Miss
at Rutgers
Throw in home games against #5 Texas A&M, #8 South Carolina, and Miss State and that's a crazy schedule. Arkansas' East opponents went 22-4 last year (SC, Fla).
Yeah, Bielema's such a jerk for bringing that up. All of us here in Arkansas had completely forgotten about that and he reminded us. /sarcasm
Seriously though, he probably shouldn't have said that, but his job isn't to appease Petrino or his mistress. The Petrino and John L Smith debacles left Arkansas fans with a distrust for their head coaches, so before he wins a game Bielema has to bring back that swagger.
If you can't locate Saline County, Arkansas, on an unlabeled map of Arkansas, then you are not qualified to have a strong opinion on this situation. Bielema's tweet about it was exactly right.
Bielema says something like this at media days or a press conference? Bad news. Saline Country fish fry? Get over it. There is almost nothing he could say that I would oppose. Some people need to grow a pair and quit getting so offended by everything.
I like the number crunching, but even as a biased Hog fan it's very hard for me to think Young deserved such an award. Sure he made a lot of positive contributions, but if you took into account missed FGs (his FG% was pretty low, especially 3FG%) and numerous turnovers, he took a lot away from the offense, especially late in the year. He's definitely going pro (has W's in all his spring semester classes, going to kill our APR), but if he can figure his shot out, he'll be a decent player.
Arkansas (and probably LSU) deserved NIT bids. This is not an issue for debate. There is no question.
Here's your eye test. "Eye" a comparison of St John's (NIT 5-seed) and Arkansas' resume:
Team Record (Conf) RPI vs50 vs100 vs150+ Road Best W Worst L
Arkansas 19-13 (10-8) 88 3-6 7-10 9-1 1-9 #9 #224
St John's 16-15 (8-10) 93 3-7 5-11 8-2 4-7 #36 #215
Looking at the resume, my question is that if next year Arkansas goes 8-24 (and 8-3 on the road), will they be a 4-seed or a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament? That's where it appears they should be with the way the criteria is currently weighted.
How did Barbee manage to land such a massive deal? Contract through 2017 with a $3 million buyout? I'm looking through his 3-year resume and I'm not seeing any specific point where it would have made sense to extend and/or raise him, and he surely wasn't offered a 7-year deal with a buyout of $3 million from the start.
Coaches' contracts are kind of ridiculous (maybe I'm just ignorant...), but how'd Auburn work themselves into this contract mess?
Interesting thing to note is that Bud Walton's PA announcer, Johnny George, is announcing the SEC Tournament. Maybe he'll make our players feel at home and they'll make a run here. If Arkansas plays like they do at home, they're potential favorites to run their side of the bracket to meet Florida/Tennessee in the finals.
Congrats to Mizzou, who got exactly what they wanted. Not only a blowout, but their coach acting like a moron (not unlike Petrino vs LSU 2011) on national television to get Arkansas fans all riled up for the rivalry. These teams should be top-5 SEC teams over the next few years, so I expect some heated matchups. The treatment we gave Kentucky in Fayetteville this year will be given plus more to Mizzou next year in Fayetteville.
I'm going to be very upset if Tennessee makes the tournament over Arkansas if they both finish with the same SEC record. How their RPI is 23 points ahead of us is baffling anyway, considering:
-Arkansas has a better overall record, albeit by a half-game (17-10 vs 16-10)
-The teams have the same SEC record (8-6)
-Arkansas has a better record vs RPI top 50, again by a half-game (3-4 vs 2-4)
-Arkansas beat Tennessee, 73-60, two weeks ago.
Any idea how they have THAT much of a better resume?
"Cristobal served as the head coach at Florida International from 2007 through 2012. This past season he was on Al Golden’s Miami staff as tight ends coach and assistant head coach."
This past season WAS 2012, in which Cristobal coached FIU to a 3-9 record and got fired. Did you mean to say he's been on Golden's staff since after his firing, which has only been a couple months ago?
True but I doubt NFL scouts would put much stock into the words of L Smith and Mini Petrino. The guy that needs to be worried is Tank Wright, who elected to miss the last 7 games to get some kind of surgery. Paul Haynes all but named him by name in his interview. But then again will the scouts care, since Haynes probably doesn't even know the difference between a Cover 2 and a Cover 3?
@John at MrSEC Regardless of what I say on here, on other media sites such as Hogville and Twitter I always defend your credibility and note that you are one of the best at analyzing SEC football and basketball. What bugs me is when you get attached to certain topics and keep bringing them back up unnecessarily. You're not out to get Arkansas or anything, but you keep coming back to this when everyone (and I mean everyone) let it go a long time ago.
Here's why this shot wasn't TIMELY, and was just an unnecessary cheap shot:
1. Bielema's clarification. Bielema went on both local and national media explaining his comment when he was hired. His explanation was honest and made perfect sense. He said he didn't found the Big Ten, he was taught its rules and was loyal to them. Now he's in the SEC, which he also didn't found, and will play by its rules. But that didn't stop you...
2. Tiquention Coleman. Skipper isn't the first commit of another school to flip to Arkansas. Coleman flipped from Wisconsin to Arkansas A MONTH AGO. If you'd have taken your little shot back then it would have made more sense. But that didn't stop you...
3. Sam Pittman. Pittman recruited Skipper to Tennessee, and when Pittman left for Arkansas, the solidity of Skipper's commitment to Tennessee was immediately up-in-the-air. It's not really surprising that Pittman would then recruit Skipper to his next stop. But that didn't stop you...
4. All the others. When Skipper visited two weekends ago, he was one of SEVEN already-committed prospects the Hogs hosted. Guys like Altee Tenpenny (Alabama) and Kenny Lacy (UCLA) have gotten much more media attention than Skipper had. If this was out-of-the-ordinary, it would make more sense. But that didn't stop you...
The window for taking shots at Bielema closed a long time ago for the above reasons. If "TIMELINESS" wasn't a factor, then anytime I saw a picture of Nick Saban wearing crimson I could refer to Saban's comments about not leaving the Dolphins...
You do a good job overall, and I enjoy reading the site. Keep up the good work.
"(It was less than a year ago that he whined about Urban Meyer’s tactics at Ohio State.)"
I don't think you've ever mentioned this on this site before. Please elaborate. Sorry we stole a Tennessee commit.
Arkansas still has a solid chance to make the tournament. Texas A&M and Ole Miss having fast starts has made the tournament race interesting.
If Arkansas can notch a couple of road wins, I could see A&M, Ole Miss, the Hogs, and Kentucky all finishing around 12-6 or 11-7 in conference. Should be interesting.
@JeffMcCartney Haha. Probably a little bit. Manziel is one of those guys that when he's on your team you love him because he's freakishly athletic and arrogant. But when you have to face him you hate him for the same reasons.
Ryan Mallett was a lot like that. If he had played for LSU or someone I would have loathed him. Bobby Petrino was the same way. Arkansas had a freak QB named Matt Jones (2001-2004) that was like that as well.
Since Manziel was arrested last summer and is an arrogant jerk on Twitter, I see nothing wrong with Stoops' comments. He's exactly right.
Manziel is an incredible player, but I really hope Chris Smith or Trey Flowers lights his world up in Fayetteville next fall.
