In America Owning is always better than renting.  ESPN pulled a Don King on Mike Slive.  He showed Slive the money and Slive's greed kept him from getting the best deal

If Slive falls for the paycheck and not ownership then he is not as smart as I thought.   Short-term thinkers take a check(see Texas).  People with vision own(see Big10 & PAC 12) .   Yes the Big10 struggled early, but now they have a cash cow, as will the PAC12.

Although the released footage is new to the public, the AD & Prez in November saw Rice kick a player in the fanny.  If their judgment & the  tape did  not tell them  that Rice had a problem then they lack the ability to see the big picture.   This makes Jeff  Long look even stronger, by firing a successful and popular coachhese guys hid behind a loser, as the AD said to "protect Rugers University".     That's not leaership

Defend Mike Rice & his AD if you want, but these were not isolated incidences.  In fact ESPN released more footage today and in one he puts his foot right up a kid's fanny, while in anoter he takes the dummy and uses it to hit another kid.  How could the AD & prez not fire this guy on the spot?

Looking at this from another perspective, while in college my fraternity was suspended for "hazing another student.  The school administrators reviewed the documents and concluded that for hazing one student the chapter should be suspended for 4 years.  Mike Rice hazed 10-14 students and was suspended for 3 games and continued to collect over a $ $million in cash from a state supported university, after his superiors review.  Do you want these individuals making decisions regarding students, and potential liability?

"Guess a lot of people were delusional".........That happens all the time.  Most folks have the herd mentality, even if it means being wrong.   Pressey is the only player on the team, with 5 transfers and Bowers(out last season) comprise the 8-man rotation.  No other team other than UK can say the same.  The conference underachieved, but  Mizzou did their part.

MrSec........News flash!!!   Mizzou made the tournament.  If anyone(including you) predicted a team that returned 1 player from last years's entire roster to be a top 10 team, they were delusional.  Even UK's champions & Final Four returned 3-4 role players to supplement the 1 & Dones.  Mizzou is in,(although playing Louisville in Lexington insures an early exit).

 SEC basketball has 3 issues:

1) the Horrible losses in November & December.  The coaches need to prepare their teams just as the other major conferences to beat the early season cupcakes.  In the SEC it appears folks are still celebrating football

2) Officiating......the inconsistent officiating hurts the teams and chances to make tournaments.  The home team has a decided advantage not because teams cant play on the road, but because the officials call 2 different games, one for the vistors and one favoring the home team.  This exist across the board throughout the SEC.

3) In conference Schedule- It lacks rhyme or reason.  If football can be broken into 2 leagues then why can't basketball.  At least have thedivisions play round robin against each other.

Franklin will be fine.  Those who question his toughness forget how he was injured in the spring practice ...He jumped into a pile to recover a fumble.  Not very smart, but it illustrated the kind of player he was.  In addition the previous year he took players head on.  Franklin never should have played last year.   He could not throw until June, but even during fall practice he could not throw on consecutive days.  Pinkel knew coming into a stronger league that he needed Franklin because the guy behind him was not ready.  He wanted Franklin to take the pain-killer and Franklin made the right choice.  The problem was theOC kept running an empty backfied and teams were teeing off on Franklin, or the OC would run Franklin up the middle.  Pinkel and his staff did not coach very well last year.

Pinkel would love to start Mauck, but he knows Mauck is not better than Franklin. Hecould also by time by telling the alums I started a freshman at qb if therecorddoes not improve.    Mizzou fans foundation for Mauck is his high school record & Johnny Football's success as a redshirt freshman....How often does that happen.  Mauck is no Johnny Football.

John, your comment on Mizzou not getting Warmack goes to the weakness with the overall  rating system.  Mizzou recruited Abbington a 4 star running back, but missed on Elliott another 4 star running back this year.   Warmack selected K-State because they recruited him as a rb, while Mizzou recruited him as a db.  Warmack is 5.8 185 and Mizzou is moving away from the small running back(Abbington is 6.2 215) & Markel Smith a commit for next year at rb is 6.2 220).    What Mizzou did learn is that in the SEC the bigger back has a better chance than the smaller back that can run wild in the Big12 due to the lack of defensive tackles in the league(not a dt in Big12 is expected to go in top 3-4 rounds in draft).   In addition Mizzou has two 5.8 185-190 rbs on the squad(Hansborough a Soph, & Josey a Jr.).   You are correct in stating that Mizzou needs to shore up the borders, but this does not apply to this kid.

John  how long should Ole Miss give Kennedy to make the tournament?   There is always a risk involved when replacing a coach.  You never know if you are going to get a Buzz Peterson or a Bruce Pearl, but at some point you have to change direction.

 Thanks, I enjoy the site.

Andy has been there 7 years and has never made the NCAAs.  The winningest coach has built his record on horrible teams, see his overall strength of schedule.  The coach before him was fired after a couple of down years, but he took the team to the tournament and did not pad his record against the 'lil sisters of the poor".  Finally when he loses to a team that has lost 13 in a row, and is down to a few scholarship players, then he should be fired.  Maybe they will need to call Bobby the Kennedy that would cut your throat.

Frank has ALWAYS thrown his players under the bus.  As a Mizzou grad I followed Frank Martin at K-State and after each loss he would blame the players, and at times even drop names or plays(you knew which player) that led to his defeat.  His act will wear thin because behind all of his tough talk is the fact that he can not coach basketball.  Look for players to be thrown under the bus in the future.

The 1 & done has adversely affected all of college basketball.  The ACC is down!  The Big12 is down!  The Pac12 is down. The Big East is down Only the BIG appears to have quality and depth.  The S-E-C can always fall back on, "We're a Football league"

I agree that there are not any guarantees involved, howvever the ACC's instability  benefits the SEC.  The SEC wants Carolina & Va. Tech ideally To capture the Carolina, Va. & DC market.  Slive is willing to take Duke if Carolina mandates.  However if UNC & Duke go to the Big10, then Slive still has NC.St to fall on for the Carolina market. NCST is the 2nd most popular school in the state behind UNC(Duke fans are Durham only in state).  So at worst the SEC gets NCST & Va.Tech which provides Carolina, Va, & DC markets.

Mike Slive has illustrated that he can go on the offensive & be defensive in one move. Why would Mike Slive sign a Bowl agreement with a league that was on life -support at the time of the agreement?   Why would Slive not work out an agreement with a conference(ACC) in larger tv-markets than the Big12(Texas & 4 small states)?

Signing the Bowl deal with the Big12 gave LONG-TERM legitimacy to the Big 12 as the 4th major conference, while dooming the ACC.  Legitimizing the Big12 was done to accelerate the demise of the ACC so that the SEC could expand into North Carolina & Virginia.  If the ACC remained strong then the odds of the SEC moving into those states diminish.   That in my opinion was the most astute move in this game of realignment.

Jones inherited an undefeated team from Kelly, while Strong took over for a coach that could not win or recruit and was fired.  Strong rebuilt a program while Jones at best kept a program at a certain level.  It is not always how high you are, but sometimes how far you have come.

Not sure your issue with Strong, but folks said the same thing about James Franklin &Kevin Sumlin.  Even before the season started you implied more than once that Sumlin may not be the right coach for A&M even after his successful run at Houston.  You implied (more than once) that Sumlin was in the hot seat even before he coached a game.  Now Charlie Strong'S success at Louisville, his experience at Florida does no tmake him SEC-headcoach material(see Petrino's record, Louisville, SEC assistant-1 year in pros).  Now  other than the mistress and bike ride please explain why Petrino was a "GET" while Strong is a "REACH" .  Then John please look at the other head coaches in the SEC and their experience before their current positions and tell me how Strong's background differs?  Other than Saban I do not see any difference.     C'mon John help me with your (il)logic.

Gruden may be the most over-rated coach of all time.  He should know that unlike Tampa Bay there is not a ready-made team in place.

John, as if you were impartial and not rooting against Mizzou & A&M.  Your hand was exposed when you criticised the student video, "not SEC-like".   Anyone with half a brain (or objective) would know that A&M did not put up that billboard.  That has the Longhorns written all over it, as retaliation for the Aggies putting a billboard in Austin Texas.

The newbies understand that the SEC community would like to see them fail(losing reinforces that the SEC is the best conference), but you are the first blog host to come out and admit it.  The games will be decided on the field.

As a Mizzou Alum I think that Sheldon's comments were ill-timed and not very thoughtful.    I believe the pressure & hype of being in the SEC is affecting the players & coaching staff.   The no respect mantra is wearing thin.   Let's win at least 1 SEC game before the trash talking starts.

As Richt asked, "did he say old school", because there is a difference between old school & old style.  The former is a compliment.

Injuries & suspensions are not acceptable....btw Mizzou is without their top rusher Henry Josey, who's out the entire year.  He ignited Franklin & the offense last year, but we can't use that as an excuse.

Finally most SEC-schools were pulling for UGA beforeRichardson's comments (except USC, Fla, & Tenn for obvious reasons).
