Serena lost worse a few days ago and there were fewer excuses.

@Fernando so to clarify: some kads are bemoaning Rafa's errors yet others say indoor tennis doesn't require consistency. Please put down the koolaid before you OD

@Northernboy Some Rafa acolytes are deluding themselves with this 'anyone could have beaten him' mantra. Much like the Bouchard bunch claiming Petra was unplayable at Wimbledon. Accept defeat with grace and respect and move on. Nothing is permanent.

@IGotYouNow Yes, I too will lose ALL RESPECT for her. How can a competitor do something that's in their own best interest, how crass and unforgivable. It's not like most people don't do that in their banal office jobs every day.

@ivo @vikki good Good on Petra for reciprocating the noise. I don't like playing overly loud opponents, it seems like a way to dominate the space and rhythm of play. There are valid reasons (exhale through contact, etc), but beyond a certain point it's just annoying noise, extra incentive to ratchet up the intensity in opposition to all that howling.

@SandyDeMarco Rafa has a three year contract with Basel (contracts are about dough, plain and simple). Steve didn't express any disdain for capitalims he simply pointed it out, which upset you. Why exactly? It seems you'd rather we all pretend it doesn't exist, as if that's somehow better. 2¢

@faradubii Genie already lost, making 30 ufies. Aga... her game is limited and gets exposed aghainst the top tier, and occasionally against the lower tiers.

@Carol35 @KomboChapfika @quietplease @SandyDeMarco maybe Perhaps, watch other sports to see how significant pacing and recuperation can be, physically and mentally. Most sports have rules against delays of play, stalling tactics, unsportsmanlike attempts to disrupt an opponent's momentum, etc. In a sport of such small margins the marginal stuff actually matters. It's also not random that players who like to play grueling points tend to slow things down between points when under pressure, that's how they compete.

@ivo 'Beefing up' is not the answer. Our bodies are not machines, we have our natural builds and often adding on muscle just lowers agility and makes players more injury prone as it puts more strain on their joints.

"It was comparable to a rank journeyman beating Andy Murray in his first match at Wimbledon, or a qualifier taking down Roger Federer in his opener in Basel."

LMFAO, actually it's nowhere near comparable. Andy Murray has won grand slams and Fed has won a few himself. Genie has won... I dunno, one small tournament I think. She's done well in th Grand slams, but she's yet to win even one and is not in the same league as the players you're trying to group her with.

Puhlease.

I just remembered how quick some ppl were to describe Petra's play in the Wimby final as 'unplayable', 'no one could have beaten her that day' in a thinly disguised attempt to draw attention away from how badly Genie adjusted during the match to a bigger hitting opponent. I don't see so much of that now, now the culprit is 'home crowd pressure.' Fair enough, but there's a pattern emerging already, with regards how her fans deal with adversity moreso than the player herself.

@yazzzycosmo @KomboChapfika I hear you, but the fact is she's lost 3 of her last 5 sets 6-0. She'll likely stop the slide, but still, the fact remains. And there is a precedent for a an inexorable slide like this... beware the ghost of Gaudio...

@Paul Goldberg Bouchard is better compared to Raonic or Dimitrov. She's not on the same tier as Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray on the ATP, or SW, VW, Maria, Vika on the WTA. The hype machine has been so eager to anoint her onto to their level when she simply is not there yet and there's no guarantee she ever will be.

The WTA and the media don't choose the champions, that's a distinction  earned on the court by winning grand slams.
