Nadal was outgunned from the offset and had no answer. When he was younger and being outgunned he could back off the baseline and win with intense defense, but his legs can't do that on hard courts anymore. He has to play better, more aggressive-less reactive, tennis to win now that he's not the strongest fittest guy on tour. The miraculous gets are great spectacles, but they're also a symptom of being defensive and way out of position.

We'll see going forward how much he plays on non-clay surfaces. He essentially stopped playing after Wimby last yr, If this was his first Top 10 opponent since RG that says a lot.

We've seen this before. At one point Fed and Gonzo had the biggest forehands n tour. That time past, Gonzo retired and Fed kept at it. It's been interesting watching him continue to play and win a lot (#2 in the world) when he's no longer the fittest and biggest hitting slugger on tour. To borrow from boxing, he's a cruiser weight now, while guys like Raonic, Berdych, Djokovic, Delpo! et al are genuine heavyweight sluggers.

I used to play with a Wilson Pro Staff 95" and I tried one of the new Techni-Fibre racquets... I felt like I'd been playing handicapped for years. Modern tech kills stuff from a decade ago. It felt much more stable through contact, had a bigger sweet spot, generated more spin, was easier on the wrist, lighter... #Technology

@PeterWF Anderson mentally wasn't up for it. I stopped watching that match after he failed to convert on four or five break points at 5-5 in the first set. To that point he'd been holding comfortably and out-hitting Rafa. He's not mentally confident enough to go for the jugular when the opportunity is there.

@pwal24 @KomboChapfika They're beefing over the definition of 'couple' and the USTA's 'couple's tournament' is just a pawn in that battle. *sigh

@TennisPlus @KomboChapfika I thought about that obvious quip and someone predictably had to make it. Race doesn't restrict participation in any USTA tournament I'm aware of.

I think I get it. The USTA has a 'couples' tournament where all the teams are straight (man+woman). Feeling left out and wanting affirmation, BJK lobbied for, and won, gay couples tournaments. Rather than organize independent tournaments, the main thrust (pun intended) is to have the USTA, the respected national tennis organization, do it. Fair enough.

@XTZ Okay, so gay people want the USTA to allow them to compete in the 'couples' tournament. Makes sense, why not just play in the same tournament with the mixed gender couples... oh wait... hmmm...

This seems like a case of 'didn't ask, but they wanted to tell.' Should we applaud the couples for playing while gay? What am I missing here? People don't have to declare their orientation to play a tennis tournament.

The sexual orientation of a man or woman is irrelevant. This is so redundant as to be absurd. In terms of sport how are two gay men pairing up for doubles any different from two straight men? What are they saying exactly? Billie Jean King's never seen a mic she didn't want to talk into. If, for example, USTA was allowing transvestites to compete in their chosen gender categories (former man now playing the ladies) there'd be something to talk about, otherwise *yawn*

@aka raoger @KomboChapfika @lexxlutz @ivo Fatigue is part of sport. My issue is claiming it as the cause of one point. You're overplaying your hand to say that fatigue is what caused Milos to double fault at 30-30. Why not nerves, a much more obvious culprit when the chips are down.

@MBB She was mental very rigid in doing nothing to adjust against Petra in the Wimby final. 6-3 6-0. A smarter player would have adjusted or at the very least tried something other than standing on the baseline trying to outhit a dialled in Kvitova.

@Larry in the Silicon Raonic can reduce the game to his serve and forehand alone. If he actually has to play a tennis, with all its nuances and variety, he's in trouble. If it's a clobber contest, sure.

Hard to predict. Serena won as many slams (1) as that paragon of inconsistency Kvitova last year. And while her H2H records against her closest rivals are phenomenal she might lose to Cornet or somebody else. Right now she's clearly the best, the question is will she be the best during the slams?

@face it @wunderkid Good point. There's a certain level of discomfort people are willing to put up with when they see how far they have to go to achieve their goals. Once we get close or achieve them, we tend to get finicky about things. All of a sudden, 'does he/she get the job done' becomes, 'does he/she make me feel like I'm with family.'
