Oklahoma City Thunder without Kevin Durant[+] EnlargeMark D. Smith/USA TODAY Sports

Eastern Conference assistant coach: "They'll be good without Durant. They still have a large part of their nucleus. I think losing Thabo Sefolosha is going to hurt them because he could always guard the opponent's great offensive player. But without him -- if Russell Westbrook gets into foul trouble, what now? Westbrook will play well without Durant. He's just so dominant. I don't particularly like the way he plays, but he's so good. You talk about Derrick Rose driving to the basket, well, Westbrook's two inches taller and just as, maybe even more, athletic. I've heard some say that playing without Durant will help their other players, but I don't think so because of the way Westbrook plays. He's like, 'I'm going to dominate you.' If you put Chris Paul on that team, yeah, Chris Paul is going to make Jeremy Lamb andSteven Adams better because he just gives guys confidence and puts them in position to score. But Westbrook is not like that."

Eastern Conference scout: "I think they're middle of the pack without Durant. There are just too many other good teams out West. Westbrook, with or without Durant, all he wants to do is shoot it. He has a scorer's mentality. He's a tremendous athlete, the second-best athlete in the league next to LeBron. He's just not a point guard. He could be the leading scorer in the league until Durant gets back because he's going to take a lot of shots. I don't think losing Durant for the start of the season will necessarily keep them from winning the West. I think they'll still win enough games and keep the ship afloat until he gets back. They'll win more than they lose while he's out."

What I think will happen: The Thunder will be a few games over .500 without KD, and Westbrook will average 25 PPG in his absence.

@Jooseppi @Thunder_Blue @Thunder S thats basically what im trying to say with "play like the bulls." rely on defense now.

@Jooseppi @Thunder S no just maybe play slower and get better shots. Not so many pullup reckless fast break points, and maybe give the ball to Steven Adams in the post?

I mean really, whats our starting unit offense other than Russ Drive and kick or pick and pop?

1 day, 5 hours ago on Lessons from preseason

Reply

@Jooseppi @Thunder S because our style  currently is premised on having a prolific scorer who can score at any time. thats why we dont need a system and can gamble so much on D - we know we'll get it back. now that changes

Im genuinely curious to hear why we shouldnt attempt to play bulls style for the first few weeks, even if its a crappier version.

I'm not saying we have identical personnel, but noah facsimile Ibaka; roberson facsimile butler defensively ....why cant westbrook be d rose west?

@ Luke @Thunder S We were fifth last year in defensive efficiency and bulls were second. Is it unreasonable to think we could be second? Golden State was third and they only have two - maybe three- good defenders in their starting lineup.

@ Luke @Thunder S Im genuinely curious to hear why not. I posed it more to understand why not

Ibaka is excellent and roberson is by all accounts very good. Morrow is bad, granted, but bulls have played mediocre defenders and still the team D has been good...also see the spurs. It's not like marco bellinelli is a world beater defensively and they were still really good defensively.

Westbrook can be good when he tries and locked in.

I grant you the bench is problematic with RJ and Lamb. But PJ and Perk can be good situational defenders imo. Anyway, last year we were good defensively with Durant, will we drop off that much without him?

Interesting question: Could we play like the bulls? I think we have the potential to be that good on D, even without durant.

I think people are missing this- yes reggie wants to start, but he's said over and over he wants to be a STARTING POINT GUARD. there's nothing the thunder could and would do that would assuage him.

Could we get to 70 wins this year? Hear me out. Russ healthy for a full season (hopefully) is worth a few games, so is gradual improvement. Pair that with less perkins time, better shooting with morrow, and great depth, i think we could get to 70 with a bit of luck.

If you were sam presti right now, whats a trade you would eye during the year to push our team over the top? Consider what's available and probable.

The prob. with Lamb's development imo is that we are trying to turn him into a 2 guard that doesnt need the ball in his hands- coming off curls, spotting up, a la some sort of rip hamilton. I dont think he's a rip type player. I think he's a scoring 2 who needs the ball in his hands, a la reggie jackson. The fit is not perfect.

Im really interested to see how the team is committed to improving this year. Are we looking at a new offense? Are we just going to rely on individual improvement- Westbrook: shooting/defense, KD- post game, Ibaka - more plays run for him on offense?

The big question is whether this roster as constructed has maxed out its potential, or whether we still have another level we can reach.

The best commercials are those that coincide with what the public reflexively thinks about when they see the athlete.

To me, none of the KD commercials have been on point except for the Sam Cooke Nike Commercial where he's driving around OKC. Anyone have that clip?

KD is not "the Baddest" or "Not NICE" ... to me he's the humble superstar that is as good and decent a person as you'll find. Market That.

The truth. On a Reddit thread about the initial Tweet, a Lithuanian user went back and listened to the actual radio interview the "quote" was from. And transcribed it a little better—or at least a little fuller. Here's what Donatas Motiejunas actually said:

Q: When communicating with Howard and Harden, what do you talk about?

A: Basically I say just "Hello" and "Goodbye" to them.

Q: They don't invite you to barbecue or something?

A: No, they eat different food than me.

Q: What? Do you mean they eat oysters?

A: No... being European, I am more likely to eat oyster than them. They eat fast food.
