Interesting article, Ryan.  I have a little bit of a mixed experience with this.  I grew up in Central Florida and the Orlando Magic were formed when I was 5 years old so I became a Magic fan then.  As a kid I just thought I was supposed to root for our new team.  I didn't really think about it in terms of wins and losses.  Obviously over the next few years that team would turn into a powerhouse and one of the most popular in the NBA so it was a good thing I was already a fan as a child.  I've been hooked to Magic basketball ever since.

Counter to that is my history with football.  My family is originally from Washington DC and so they are all die-hard Redskins fans.  Initially I was too, but as a kid my favorite player in all of football was Reggie White who played for the Green Bay Packers.  Soon I started to watch Packers games more intently than Redskins games and then obviously that Packers team ended up winning a Super Bowl.  Once Reggie was gone from the team I had to consider whether I was a Packers fan but I just couldn't turn away and now that's what I'll be until I die or the team goes away (the former will probably happen first).

If the Magic moved away I'd be extremely heartbroken and I honestly don't know what I would do.  I love basketball too much to stop watching but I have no idea who I'd turn to.  I guess the logical thing would be to follow the Heat but that would feel like ripping my soul out.

The problem I have with the concept of a shootaround having to take place at a certain time is that every person is different in when their mind works best.  Some people are morning people and some people work better later in the day.  So maybe Vaughn just felt like he would get more out of his players attention later in the day as opposed to the morning.  Or maybe somehow he thinks that being on this type of cycle will give his players more energy at the end of games, which can be late in the evening.

12 months ago on Is it smart to end morning shootarounds?

Yeah, it really is a bummer.  Hedo was a lot of fun to watch until he left.  When he came back I barely recognized him.  He looked so lazy on the floor and while he was always prone to throwing up a couple bad shots, some of the shots he put up when he came back were just inexcusable.  For it to end that way plus the PED thing and a buyout, so sad.  I'll try and remember the 08-09 Hedo.

Obviously, Dipo's rookie campaign is the thing I'll be looking at the closest this upcoming season.  He was my favorite player coming into the draft and I hope he rewards my faith.

1 year ago on Player Profile: Victor Oladipo

Man, that black and blue promo shot of Dipo is mesmerizing.

I'd be surprised if he wins ROY because I think the Magic will use him in a very utilitarian role that doesn't usually lead to a ROY win.  But who knows, because I'm very high on him as a player coming out of college.

1 year ago on 3-on-3: Will Victor Oladipo win Rookie of the Year?

It's funny because even when I was younger I knew that most of the shots Tracy would take didn't seem like great shots but they would go in most of the time.  Durant sorta reminds me of T-Mac in that way.  They don't seem like great shots but when you take into account how pure the shooter is and the size/wingspan involved, they actually have better looks than it would appear on tape.  However, my favorite thing about McGrady was when he would drive to the basket.  He was just so fast and powerful it didn't seem like anyone could stop him.  He was like the stopgap between a Jordan-type scorer and a LeBron-type scorer.  He wasn't quite as skilled as Jordan and he didn't have the power of LeBron but he sat somewhere in-between.

Great piece, Spencer.  I was not coming in expecting a three way McGrady/DiMaggio/Keats comparison but you brought it together.

I can never really explain Tracy's abilities.  He had so much power and speed but was also really lanky and it never seemed like he should've been able to do those things.

1 year, 1 month ago on Tracy McGrady and unaccountable greatness

I think this game says less about Tracy's ability to score efficiently and more about how much the Magic had to rely on him to get any wins in those days.

I'm really surprised at how well Doron Lamb is playing.  He really didn't impress me much last year but he definitely looks like he's been working hard in the offseason.  Actually it looks like all of our players have been working hard and that's a great sign.  Nicholson seems to have improved his passing, Lamb has improved his body and shooting looks good, Harkless has worked on his strength and thus far I'm very impressed with Oladipo even though he didn't have a good shooting game here.

I have no reason not to trust Hennigan and the Magic FO so far.  That doesn't mean I will agree blindly with every decision but I'm stoked about this draft.  If Rob can pull Nicholson out of pick #19 then I'm excited to see what he pulls with a top 5 pick, even if this is supposed to be a weak draft.

@Magicalseth On a S&T you have no leverage.  If he had another contract year then yes, we would've cashed in hard on Ryan.  As it was, Rob didn't really have a choice there.  It was bad timing. The only thing he could've done different is re-sign Ryan and whether he should've done that or not is debatable.

I thought Dwight was great in this game.  I don't think you can say it was Orlando vs. Dwight because I don't think any of those players with the exception of Jameer had a grudge.  And Jameer is professional and mature enough to not let that grudge get out of hand.  I think you'll see Magic fans move on rather quickly from this but I understand that they needed to vent in this game.  Dwight too.  He was uncomfortable but I think he also needed to come back and flex his muscles a little bit.  That's really all the Magic fans and Dwight were doing is flexing their muscles in an insecure way.  It comes from the fact that we were so strong together and we haven't defined what we are apart yet.  Boy, that sounded schmaltzy.

I'd say the Lakers in three years but in five?  Obviously Orlando is a blank slate right now so anything can happen.  Remember that the Lakers have had Kobe for 16 years so our recent memory of that team stems from that.  He will be gone soon and who will the big free agent be that will pair with Dwight (assuming he resigns which I'd bet he will)?  The Lakers are the Lakers and I wouldn't bet against them either but I'd say this current season has put a serious damper on whether they can compete without some sort of rebuild.  In that way the Magic may just have an advantage with some high picks coming in 2013 and 2014 (presumably) and some decent young talent.  I'm gonna be a homer and say in 5 years the Magic are in a better place than the Lakers.

Really, GM's are paying for safety.  Players that have been in the league and have numbers you can pretty much count on get big contracts.  Vooch doesn't get that confidence yet because he's still starting out.  But he'll probably get paid big time in a few years by us or someone else.  Think Ryan Anderson, who was an enormous bargain when we had him to say the least.  Now he's got a contract that matches his production and thus he's no longer as much of a bargain.  But Nik having a money-saver contract for the next few years is a great thing for a rebuilding Magic team to have both flexibility and credibility to free agents.  It also gives us fertile soil to plant some draft picks.

Great analysis, Jacob.  Welcome to Magic Basketball!

I feel like most of our plays lately have been ending in long twos, despite this hi-lo set which can end in corner 3s and dunks.  It'd be nice if Vaughn could get us into position to make those shots more often rather than the inefficient shots we've been taking.  Sadly, I'm not sure we have the personnel to execute those shots on the reg either.

Gotta give a special mention to Al Harrington for his first game back and he gave us a great lift.  Also, this game was a great example of players who can find life somewhere else in the NBA.  The Sixers didn't want to keep Vuc or Harkless so we have made great use of them.  Also we're getting solid minutes out of Harris and Udrih from Milwaukee.  The Magic are like the Island of Misfit Toys right now.

Vaughn will still find a way to limit Drew's minutes either because Harrington is set to return or because he'll just play Harris there a bunch for no good reason.  Andrew Nicholson cannot play more than 20 minutes a game or he turns into a pumpkin.

You got it.  2010 was the last Magic team that had the excitement around it you're talking about.  I've enjoyed this season much more than last year for sure.  Last year was the worst in my history as a Magic fan.  That's saying a lot because we've had some pretty bad years in our tenure.  I've got a lot of hope that this team is gonna be pretty great by the time 2014-2015 rolls around.  In the meantime, it'll be awesome to watch guys like Nicholson develop.
