 @Royce Young

On Simmon's podcast Zach Lowe said that Ibaka could be traded by December 15th (I would assume the same would have been true for Harden if we had signed him to an early extension)  The only way we would need Harden's consent to trade would be if we let him go to RFA and then match his offer.

Also, Bucher tweeted that Presti didn't explore many deals around the league, preferring to keep trade negotiations quiet (similar to what UTAH did with D-Will).  How can we know if they got the best bang for their buck if that is actually true? Why are we so worried about the fact that Houston wanted that extra year?  I am sure there are other teams who regarded him highly and would have been just fine trading for him and his 4 year contract...  (Kevin Love only got a 4 year extension with a player option after year 3....)

Reply

"But if you roll those dice and don’t win a title and Harden walks away, then Sam Presti is left holding his hat in his hands and has made a really irresponsible long-term choice."

What???  You sign James Harden to an extension before the season (max if necessary) and then you trade him after the season if its still deemed necessary.  How would that be an irresponsible long term choice?  What would be the difference in what we could get this summer?  One less mid first rounder?  Seems like a cheap price to pay to keep a top 20 player on a legitimate title contender...

The best choice is obvious to me at least.  You sign Harden to an extension, and then you make a run at the title this year.  You deal with salary problems after the season and decide then what move is prudent (trading Harden or Ibaka or possibly amnestying Perkins).  You don't just take a steaming dump on your fan base in the name of saving a few dollars...

PS:  Simmons said he has multiple sources telling him that the Thunder made 30-35 million last year.  So boo-freaking-hoo about the challenges we face in a small market.  If you believe that we couldn't afford to make Harden work for 1-2 more years you're delusional in my book.

@ou_sas  @justin_mia Was the increased haul worth throwing away a chance to win the title?  It's so rare to have a legitimate title shot I don't see how anyone can justify this trade...  We were a competent coaching performance away from winning the finals last year!

@justin_mia But why not just sign him to the max and trade him after the season? He was only making like 5 million this year!  I think the Presti/Harden convo in Wichita must have went very badly.  Its the only explanation for this going down like it did...

Is it possible to still be in shock?  I still can't make sense of this move...  How do you just throw away your shot to defend the WC title like that?  Never been more devastated by a sporting event/trade in my 21 years on earth.

PS: I hope that Presti at least made the phone call to Kahn to suggest Harden/Ibaka for Love.

Not to hijack this thread with stuff that has been discussed at length but some Harden thoughts/facts:

1.   Joe Johnson was traded for a first rounder+Anthony Morrow and some other salary matching pieces right?

2.   Joe Johnson has 4 years/88 million left on his contract.

3.   A max contract for James Harden is 4 years/60 million

4.  James Harden is better than Joe Johnson (and still improving)

5.  There is a lack of top flight shooting guards in the league.

6.   James Harden is certainly a top 5 shooting guard in the league, and possibly even top 3.

7.   There are at least two teams that are rumored to be very interested in throwing the max at James next summer. (Dallas and Houston)

8.   James Harden can be traded at any time (for significant assets) if he signs a max extension with us.  (again, JOE FREAKING JOHNSON netted a first round pick this offseason...)

9.   Harden is more valuable as a trade asset if he has been extended.

10.  We will extend James Harden, and if in the future financial issues arise we will trade him.  He will not be traded this year because we have a championship team that is still very salary cap friendly.  Trading him this season ruins our chance at a championship.  IF one of our core is traded, it will be after this season(and after Harden is extended)

Dream scenario: Jones develops into a great pnr and finishing pf, who can knock down the 18 foot jumper reliably and protects the rim. His development allows us to.amnesty Perkins and keep both harden and serge. our best lineup becomes Russ-harden-durant-Jones-ibaka, or basically the most athletic lineup to ever step foot on an NBA court.y

My official stance on Brooks is this:

He is a mediocre coach who was given the keys to two of the top 5 or so talents in the NBA.  He has overseen their rise to stardom, and I think he(and Cheeks) have played a nice role in developing Russell. I believe KD would have become KD no matter who had coached him.  The Thunder lockerroom has great chemistry, which is mainly to due with Presti's smart construction of the team.  The overwhelming talent on the team has resulted in their rise to eliteness.  Brooks has been hitched to the KD-Russ-Harden-Ibaka wagon and has made the most of it.  However, if (God-forbid) we lose to a MIKE BROWN COACHED Laker team in round two, or make an uninspiring appearance in the WCF (losing in 5 or less) he needs to go.  I believe that will be enough evidence to show that the team's momentum has stalled under him, and another coach will be welcomed.  I have all the faith in the world Presti will make the right decision.

Also,  KD would NEVER EVER  say anything bad about his head coach, even if it was a drunken Paul Westphal.  So Brooks has/will always have that going for him.

I watch a ton of NBA basketball(nearly every playoff game so far) and no coach comes off worse than Brooks.  Other coaches will say "We need to deny dribble penetration, look for our big men more, and things of that sort."  Brooks' talk always just amounts to "keep playing hard and good things will happen"

Yes, obviously I have earned the "hater" tag because I expect the second most talented team in the league to not require some degree of luck to get two home wins over a 7th seeded first round opponent whose 5 best players are 33,34,33,35, and 39 years old.  Not to mention their owner has basically admitted they are making no effort to win the title this season, and Dirk experienced a championship hangover for the better part of the season.

Not to mention Brooks' mic'd up segments on TV which are altogether depressing.   " We have been playing bad!  We will start playing better!  At no moment during this huddle will I discuss any actual adjustments we should or will make!"

"The Thunder lost those games last year."  Comparing this Mavs team to last years is laughable.  Them losing Tyson, Barea, and aging another year would seem to be having a larger impact on this series than anything else.

Carlisle is still running circles around Brooks coaching wise.  Our player development has continued on an extremely positive path.

Get back to me on the whole Fisher thing when he plays 25 minutes and shoots 1-9 one of these games.  Also, not giving KD a rest in the second half has been incredibly stupid.  We have two star players, one who gets tired(KD), and one who does not(Russ).  Why rest Russ in the second half and not KD?  It wouldn't be hard to stagger the rotations so we have one of them on the court all the time.

I see basically the same Brooks as last year, just more individual improvements as has been the norm the past few years...

2 years, 4 months ago on There's lots to be encouraged about from the Thunder's good start

By the end I wouldn't have been surprised to read "Brooks also came up huge during the last timeout in game one when he instructed Mo Cheeks loosen the tension on the rim which resulted in it being forgiving enough to allow KD's shot to fall through."

Never seen so much talk praising a Head Coach for eeking out two home wins when he has 3 of the best 4 players in the series.  Possibly 4 of 5, depending on how you feel about Ibaka.
