I love it.

The two most critical qualities in a coach are:

---being able to see everything that happens on the court and understand the patterns

    ---being able to lead men

Kidd is already elite in both. I'm pretty sure he can learn how to use a clipboard, run game films, etc., without too much trouble.

We stunk the place out again. They have no Bynum or Turner, and we get solidly beat at home. Our main offensive play is ISO Joe, and our main defensive play is to wave as they go by. Whenever we started running we'd catch up, but good ol' Avery just can't have that and would pull the players (Marshon and Childress especially). If he isn't fired soon this is going to be (another) long season.

I completely agree with both posts by Mr. DB. And the defense was, if anything, worse than the offense. Two years of utterly incompetent coaching got a pass because somehow either being in New Jersey or the limited talent made it OK for him to coach terribly. It wasn't true, of course, and now we're going to pay the price yet again.

The whole thing is quite confusing (intentionally, I would guess) on what the relationship will be between insurance prices and voucher size. I think the money quote is this: "Lower income seniors in the future will receive the most generous benefits to ensure that they are able to get care every bit as good as that provided in the current Medicare program." Since other seniors will get lower voucher amounts, there must be some amount of payment on their part. Of course, at the end of the day there will be no such support for lower-income seniors, and everyone will have to pay through the nose. But at least they're making it plain that most people will pay anyway.

@SadNetsFan It has been a Nets thing to not develop players, but it doesn't have to be. For those brief periods when we've had a HOF coach (Larry Brown, Chuck Daly), the young guys overall did develop. Even the much-maligned LFrank got Brook's best play out of him and got production from CD-R.

I think we've now got a major pipeline of young talent courtesy of BK, and it's more important than ever to get a coach who can develop it. Paradoxically, all this talent we're getting for free or nearly free (Marshon, Bogdanovic, Green, Teletovic, Taylor) will make Avery look good no matter how poor a job he does. Sigh.

The big variable you didn't address is coaching. Taylor looks like a steal, but he's likely to be headed for the MarShon/Favors development arc: play great for the first month, then have all aspects of your game decay as your confidence and intelligence are undermined. The JWill arc (Avery hates you so much that you get sent to the D-League) is the only way to get better. Here's hoping Taylor arrives out of shape or just plain pisses Avery off.

Well, there is some hope. BK hired MacKinnon, so he won't want to let him get away. If he's made an assistant to Avery he could probably do the teaching, like Thibodeau did for JVG and Doc. Maybe Avery could relax and stop calling out every single play if he sees the players know what they are doing.

If you think MacKinnon as Thibs is a stretch... well, it might be. But the potential seems to be there. He flogs his team during practices, but the players love him. He sends lots of players to the bigs while winning games with what's left over. I don't think it's coincidence that the one Nets player who got better over the course of the year was Jordan Williams.

At any rate, he needs to be on the big club yesterday, before Brook, MarShon and Green become worthless.

2 years, 2 months ago on Net Worth: Avery Johnson

Reply

@AliT3 Yeah, I know. But the system isn't as important as teaching it, monitoring players and keeping them accountable, motivating them, and adjusting to your opponent. Avery's problem is really that he feels like he has to run every play. The worst coach of anything I ever saw was my nephew's soccer coach. Every time his team had the ball the coach would yell instructions to the player with the ball. "Dribble left... now go right!" The team ended up stinking because none of the players could do anything by the end. Good coaches bust their team's butts in practice but don't make it all about themselves during the game. Avery is the opposite of that.

@AliT3 Well, it's pretty hard to explain how everyone suddenly learned basketball. The only explanation that makes sense is that most of them already knew how. Everyone except the rookies had played for decent NBA teams before. JWill learned in the D-League (as did Horner and Curry-- notice how the guys from the Armor know where to stand?). MarShon, not having had a pro coach other than Avery, still doesn't know. I think all Crash did was tell everyone just to play man D, with the weakside big staying near the lane. They all know how to do that, and that's how they played. We could have done that at any point, but Avery just had to bring a big to the 3 point line. That singular, obvious piece of stupidity stopped when Crash arrived. I sure Avery knows better than to alienate a FA, especially one we had just traded for, so he let it happen. It's always the outsider who points out that the L'il General has no clothes.

Reply

@aerichner "Yeah but Im not sure how you want him to be successful when you change players so often."

I just want him to coach well.

"Is it his fault that players dont get it or care? "

My assumption is that if one guy is responsible for communicating a plan to 12 guys, and NONE of the 12 gets it, it's far more likely the one guy is a poor communicator or has confused ideas than the 12 suddenly became mentally retarded after playing intelligently for other coaches. So, this is 100% on Avery. Of course, our defense improved by leaps and bounds when Crash got here. We stopped having Hump or Shelden double the ballhandler at the 3 point line, for instance. The only conclusion I can draw, is that Crash told everyone what to do.

"Player development? How is that is his fault? "

Um, what? Who is supposed to train the players? When Derrick Favors declines over the course of his rookie year as AJ yanks him after every ticky-tack foul, then gets much better playing for rookie coach Tyrone Corbin, who is that on? When Marshon Brooks declines over his rookie year while others from his draft class are getting better? When DWill has his worst year? When Brook Lopez starts declining at 22? When Outlaw goes from a mediocre player to a disaster? Brandan Wright can't get playing time on the Nets, then goes to Dallas, gets time, and has a very good season. And on and on. On a young Nets team only ONE guy has gotten better under Avery. One. Hump. Stop the presses. Mike Brown has a better record of talent development than that, and Mike Brown is an idiot.

"Talent evaluation? How is that on him and not Billy?"

Because Billy is an outstanding talent evaluator and Avery is the worst I've ever seen. Outlaw, Petro, and Graham were Avery's boys. If we had two amnesties, we would have used them on his two favorites. BK, meanwhile, drafts MarShon and Bogs with late picks, scoops up Gerald Green for nothing, and BK is the problem.?? Oh, and the coach actually decides who goes into the game, like playing Gaines over Farmar. So Avery's disastrous lack of judgment in this area is still hurting us.

Avery is the worst, and the only defense I have ever heard from his defenders is that (insert team problem here) is not his fault. Well, it is his fault far more than any other individual in the franchise.

Here's what I see, among those things which are largely the responsibility of the coach:

A laughable defensive scheme.

A stagnant offense relying on ISOs.

Poor player development.

Very inconsistent effort.

Ridiculously poor talent evaluation.

This is what Avery does right now. Not his resume, not his reputation, HIM.

Arguing that he's not a bad coach is like arguing Outlaw is a good player because when he was with Portland they were good, and when he was in NJ it wasn't his fault because the players around him were bad. It's the same argument, To believe it, all you have to do is ignore what's happening right in front of you.

The only thing in his favor (besides being a reliable corporate cog) is that the players don't seem to dislike him. Of course, players rave about Mike D'Antoni and hate Stan van Gundy, so it's probably a function of not holding anyone (except rookies!) accountable for anything.

Well, when you consistently double the passer on the pick-and-roll, this is exactly what you would expect to happen-- either an easy shot at the rim or a wide-open man in the corner. We are the worst ever on defense by design. Even if we got a 25 year old Dikembe Mutombo at center, he wouldn't help us at all if he follows our coach's directions.

Ask Derrick Favors about what happened to MarShon's confidence and competence. I'll bet he knows. Hell, ask Brook Lopez. Or I could tell you: it's just Avery developing talent in his own special way.

BTW, is there any evidence whatsoever that the "rookie wall" exists? Any rookie who improves at the end of the season is never taken as evidence against it-- they just "emerged" or somesuch. Just look at the Nets' rookies of previous seasons. Favors got worse with us, than got much better after being traded at the deadline. Damion James played better at the end of last season. Two years ago, TWill played like a star at the end. Three years ago, Lopez got better, Ryan Anderson got better, and CD-R got better.

Long story short: if we had traded MarShon to a team with a decent or good coach, *poof*, the "rookie wall" would have been gone for him, too.

On a vaguely related note, if we can keep this team together, we'll have a number of high-intensity guys: Crash, Hump, DWill, and Green (I'm assuming the Landlord is already gone). That just makes it more important that we get a coach who is not overly controlling, like the Bad Boy Pistons blossoming under Chuck Daly. Not that controlling coaches work well with the pampered stars either, but at least then the coach is certain to get fired.

I love this guy-- he's clearly made some mistakes, but seems like he is fired up and ready to go now. He was interviewed for the pregame last night and said something along the lines of "I didn't try that hard early in my career, because making the NBA was always the goal." And despite the acrobatics, he is all business on the court. This is the kind of guy that can play a role on a championship team. I'm more sure of his value than I am of MarShon's, despite MarShon's incredible potential.

Oh, I think you're giving Dwight way too much credit. He seems to have gone through a few stages:

I) We blew it in the playoffs, get me out of here. Trade me to a contender.

II) OK, DeVos screwed me by nixing the trade, but we're winning at the moment so I'm happy. La la la la.

III) Hey, maybe we'll do better this year, and I can leave with the fans here not too mad at me. Cool! Plus, I can leave as a FA then, and the Nets will be super-good! Yay!

IV) Oh, noes! They're going to trade me NOW. I don't get to be a hometown hero. Plus, my moms is mad at me for wanting to go. What to do?

V) I know! I'll buy off the Magic by staying for a year-and-a-half. After that, mommy will have to be OK with this, and the Nets or whoever has Deron will be happy to have me. And there's no way the Magic will try to trade me this time next year....

It's as if he had no idea that the Magic and Nets have different interests, and that they would just play nice and share him. He really, really should have gone to college and wised-up some.

Billy King may or may not believe there are only 3 top players in the draft. I guarantee that he does not viww MKG and/or Robinson as being in the top 3. Why? Because draft order preference is probably the most closely guarded secret in basketball. Anyone caught leaking this would have their career ended. The leak was undoubtedly directed from the top, and is mostly a misdirection.

2 years, 4 months ago on King: No Impact Prospects Outside Of Top Three

@MarkGinocchio1 It's nice to be remembered. My constant killing of this organization was mostly about Melo and that goddamn Avery, IIRC, and I haven't changed my mind about those. And, no , I'm not OK with this trade if Deron leaves, but getting Deron to stay is entirely the point. He's not going to wait while we rebuild, and Wallace is a good player right now. When Brook comes back this is a good team (except for the coaching). Which means (if we keep Deron) we open Barclay's with a good team.

And I really do not think there's any reason to love this draft. First, we never really know beyond the first couple of picks. Second, some "future superstars" are really struggling now.

As for the #10 pick, we are right behind Cleveland, Detroit, and Golden State, we have more good players than at any time this season, and (most importantly) our schedule is getting very easy. Maybe I should have said #8 or #9, but I wouldn't bet against our moving up.

1) We're probably looking at the #10 pick, not the #5.

2) The #10 pick isn't a guaranteed anything in any draft.

3) Nobody actually knows if this draft is even stronger than average.

4) Veterans like Deron are in no mood to wait for rookies to develop.

5) If we lose Deron, that will be far more important than losing any draft pick. Has this franchise EVER drafted a player better than Deron? NO. (I don't count Kareem, since we didn't sign him)

6) Whether or not we make the playoffs, a strong finish would do a lot to convince Deron to stay.

7) We will be stronger on defense (our team's weakest point) with Wallace.

8) We will be stronger at SF, which has been a gaping hole since RJ left. This means no more playing time for the disastrous DeShawn Stevenson.

9) We will have more depth at PF, which means less time for Shelden or (hopefully) Petro.

Overall, Gerald Wallace is about as good a player as was available to address our needs. We may have overpaid on this exchange, but if it increases the chance of Deron staying by even a little, we did well.

He wasn't really being indecisive, he was just confused. From Marc Stein: "When asked why Howard told several teammates and members of the organization earlier in the day that he had, indeed, decided not to opt out of his contract, the source insisted Howard 'didn't fully understand the ramifications' of surrendering his ETO and did so largely because Magic officials warned him that he would be traded by Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline if he did not take that step."

And here I was worried that Dwight was being slick and manipulative... anyway, even the talking heads on NBATV get tangled up in the triple negative of "failing to surrender the right to waive." FWIW, that translates to "leaving this year."

1) Scorers get the big paydays in the NBA.

2) The major countervailing force to #1 is the coach's investment in the team winning. But Avery has publicly encouraged MarShon to shoot a lot, even bad shots.

3) The coach also has a history of valuing players who just heave the ball at the basket any chance they get, from Josh Howard to Petro and Outlaw.

4) Our PG isn't setting any kind of example on being unselfish.

5) You won't get any assists when you pass to a Net other than Brook.

There is no reason in the world under these circumstances to pass the ball when you have a chance to get a half-decent shot off.

"The man you just killed was just released from prison. He got caught at a company warehouse full of hot items. He could've fuckin' walked. All he had to do was say my dad's name, but he didn't; he kept his fucking mouth shut. And did his fuckin' time, and he did it like a man. He did four years for us. So, Mr. Orange, you're tellin' me this very good friend of mine, who did four years for my father, who in four years never made a deal, no matter what they dangled in front of him, you're telling me that now, that now this man is free, and we're making good on our commitment to him, he's just gonna decide, out of the fucking blue, to rip us off? Why don't you tell me what really happened? "

That's nothing compared to what the Cavs did to appease LeBron.

Either we have the most bush league front office ever or the Magic does. I'm betting on the latter.

@ArtemAltman Um, getting a little greedy, aren't we?

Anyway, with 2 max players and Hedo, that will not be happening.

I was hoping for:

35 years on the wrong side of the Hudson

35 years without a championship

35 years since selling Dr. J

1 year until all is well

...or would that alienate some fans?

Clearly the networks have chosen their side, and that side is the Kardashians.

On the topic of free agency, Avery hasn’t talked to any players at this point, but plans to soon. “I’m like Mariano Rivera,” he said, “They bring me in to close.”

God, I hate that little jerk. Go close Outlaw and Graham and leave the good players alone.
