@Belfour20 If a guy doesn't drop the gloves, especially one who doesn't fight, you don't fight him... That's my motto at least. If a guy who can fight runs around and then doesn't drop em, he's fair game. I just guess I missed when Holtby had it coming.

@Yaknowwhat @Spayde_D @thelongroad I put a comment together earlier (after 8 games I believe) of shots vs. penalties. The 1 game the other team takes more penalties (against Montreal), we outshot them.

@thelongroad @Yaknowwhat There are several opportunities a night where our guys come in off the wing and if they just kept going straight (to the outside) they could get off a shot that 90% of the players around the league take, weak, slim chance, and easily savable. However, we stop up, try to make a pass to a streaking forward with speed and create a real bonafide chance. I like our game, its dangerous, but I like it.
Most pundits would argue that we should take the shitty shot 90% of the time. It would balance out their ledgers and they wouldn't be so confused as to why we won the game. I can just picture them watching the game on a matrix like computer screen, just numbers flashing corsi and feswick, and thinking there is a glitch.
That being said, the one time that JVR takes a weak ass, slim chance, easily savable shot? He scores. Memories of Lalime come rushing back and pundits say I told you so. Can't win.
@CanuckUKinToronto @Yaknowwhat Bern YAY!
@dlb eh @ingy56 I'm not sure a 3.24 shift is admirable. How much of the inability to get a change was his fault is tough to say though.
@Dan39 I would argue the disparity is between the MSM and the Maple Leafs. If Phaneuf is on another of the 29 teams, he's a lock.

@Cameron19 @dlb eh Did he not have to pass waivers? Therefore, he would have to play on our team? Who does he slot in for?
Just a look around the league at shots:
Toronto 8-4 when outshot. Colorado 6-0 (4-1 with more shots)Montreal 5-3 (2-1 with more shots)Detroit 4-2-2 (3-1 with more shots)Phoenix 4-1-1 (3-1-1 with more shots)Tampa 4-2 (4-2 with more shots)
@Knights2Leafs @Spayde_D Second overall with 65 minor penalties against (1st-LA with 67 vs 30th-NJ with 34).
Most penalties in the 1st period.
Second worst overall in PP time minus PK time - Tor (-13.42) vs. 1st overall SJS +27.38
@Knights2Leafs @Spayde_D Meh, Calgary's team reminds me of us when we were shit sticks. Lot of effort, always outworking the other team/outshooting them, but have no top end talent to score. They needed 3 deflections off of body parts to score their second.
All guys in the NHL can skate, every team can sustain pressure. We work off the rush and transition. We are going to be outshot. Every time a team pinches, we get a chance to go the other way with speed. Keep the shots to the outside and clear rebounds and, for the most part, we should be able to keep this type of game going--especially against the likes of Calgary and EDM.
@-Keon- but on here you know the people are fans, just feeling the pressure and getting down. On PPP I can count on one hand how many actual fans there are. Toronto Maple Leaf games are watched out of convenience more than passion.
@darthNihilus Difference between a good goalie and bad goalie. Also, rebound control by the team and goalie vs. none.
Sometimes to punish/amuse myself I scroll through PPP's "game day thread" comments from start to finish. Every game is the same thing: high hopes, happiness when we score, then complaints about lack of shots, yelling at Carlyle for his line matchups, his playing Orr, his tie choice, Then comes the doom and gloom - "the other team is going to score/win/dominate/kill us", then surprise that won, then pretend that they never doubted us in the first place.
I just dont understand how you watch a game and a calculator at the same time.
@Yaknowwhat @Spayde_D @Komas Taberle No many teams do not hand out contracts to elite players and have them not pan out. Most of the time the elite players stay elite in their prime and dwindle a little in their twilight years. Phaneuf at 34 will be worth 7 mil like he is at 28. Maybe the last 2 years will be doubtful, but to get big time players and retain them, you have to sign them to what theyre worth. The Brian Burke mentality of playing hardball will have you watching other teams sign your guys away from you at deserving dollars and long term deals. Not one single player of Phaneufs calibre and age has been signed long term to comparable money and then bought out. Lecalvalier is the closest comparison but his contract was 10 Mil, the circumstances were wildly different, and his game would naturally deteriorate more than Phaneufs.
4 months, 1 week ago on What’s Dion Phaneuf Worth?
@Yaknowwhat @Spayde_D @Komas Taberle I don't know how to respond to this... Briere is 8 years older than Phaneuf, longer than the desired contract we're seeking, Lecalvalier is 5 years older (and has been in a SEVERE and well documented decline), and to compare Grabo and Bryz to Phaneuf is so laughable that I'm having indigestion.
@DeclanK Ugh... In a perfect world, Detroit 6-6, Carolina 4-8, NYI 4-8, Ottawa 4-8, NJ 3-9
Instead we have these gifted points keeping the dogs with the hares.
@Yaknowwhat @Spayde_D @Komas Taberle Well I have yet to see 1-single buyout to a top-line guy or top pairing d-man, let alone a top 15 defensemen league wide. Maybe in the last year of Phaneuf's contract we'll be talking about that, but your comparing an all-star to plugs... not fair, not accurate, and not sane.
@Yaknowwhat @Komas Taberle Then, unfortunately for the franchise, we'd lose out to Phanuef to 29 other teams if you were our GM.
@Biltmore @Spayde_D @theacs1966 @TheCanucksnaphook @B_Leaf Outside of Hall? Hall is the most injured kid I've seen since McCauley

@B_Leaf @TheCanucksnaphook @theacs1966 In my opinion, RNH isn't even worth a first round pick right now. As a secondary option he's a nice weapon and could turn into a great player. But you don't give up a stud for a chance at getting one back. They'll have to package to get anything of real substance coming back. Otherwise its just bits and pieces (which could still help them)
