This opinion piece seems quite detached from reality. The optimism is nice, but doesn't deter from a major screw up on Apple's side. Completely independent from Google, APple screwed up big time, with a crucial application for any smartphone. And maps wasn't the only screw up with tiPhone and iOS launch. There is also PassBook, the new App Store design, the WIfi issues and a lot more in regards to usability:
