WOW. Pretty harsh here. Yup, Hector was his own worst enemy, blowing up atomically about one inning per week, but an article littered with the words "frustrating", "slop", "unreliable", and "awful" seems way over the top. What I saw last year was a guy with absolutely zero run support who did whatever was asked of him by the team and step into a number of sporadic roles with a good attitude. To win, you do need a guy like that somewhere in your arsenal. To do 2014 justice, an article must at least make some note of the fact that he had the lowest run support of any pitcher in the major leagues and that he stepped into any role that was asked of him. Frankly, I thought Scioscia should have done a better job of pulling him in those innings where he was about to get knocked off balance long before 4 runs crossed the plate. For some reason he just let it ride too long and it wasn't always because the bullpen was tired.

I like Smith, but adding another proven am could be great. I think Scioscia's reluctance to award Smitty the closer job earlier was more about wanting him available in pressure situations than making him the automatic ninth inning guy. Adding a proven closer (and I vote Benoit over Street or Hoffman) could make Smith more valuable to the team much like Scott Shields was during his heyday.

Will pushing the salary limit now have an impact on what's available for Trout down the road? My guess would be yes, so I wonder at the theory that we should strain the budget to the max. Or maybe the front office prevailing theory is winning will solve everything and Trout will forget about the Northeast because of all the rings he has won here. Thoughts?

If you were out of town the few weeks he healthy last year, I fear you may never get to see him pitch for the Angels.

I wonder about Wally. He always struck me as a smart fella and easy to get along with. Hatcher got an extra five years out of personality alone. I wish there was a spot for Chili Davis somehere more elevated than his Oak job. He has done a lot with a little up there and it would be nice to cherry pick Billy's staff. (and not cuz he is a former Angel, but it surely doesn't hurt in my book)
1 year, 6 months ago on Halo Headlines: speculation on Angel coaching staff vacancies, five minor league coaches fired
This is the problem with having something nice to play with, you fear every day that it will somehow go away. Every fan waits for that one amazing player to pop out of their farm system and make all their problems go away. Now that we have ours, him going away is our biggest problem! I know it is unavoidable to read, just about weekly thus far, how MT may stay or may go, but its more of a bummer than when we were just mediocre and hoped some nice free agent may like So Cal
1 year, 6 months ago on Creative contract extension ideas for Mike Trout
@CurtisCienfuegos With the few nickels and dimes Artie left for Dipoto to sign relievers, who exactly was he supposed to sign? Our great bullpens of the past were all homegrown. Even Donnelly was a rookie when the Angels found him in that 02 season. The blame is all Artie's for gacking all his cash on players that looked good getting off the bus.

I love Beltre routinely reminding us that he is the one free agent we took a moral stand against signing and he is the one guy we haven't been able to live without.

There is nothing in callaspo that is typical of what Billy Beane seeks, and I doubt josh Donaldson is going back behind the plate. I don't really care where he flips him, but strange he couldn't use Green as the extra player. Def makes you wonder, but I still would take the trade due to upside, just hope he isn't another Dally Mac
1 year, 8 months ago on Angels send Callaspo to Oakland for Grant Green in possible precursor to Howie Kendrick trade
Since 1950 the record for most losses is 24; every time he takes the mound I will be intrigued to see how much closer he can get. The monkey at least should have a fun and festive countdown to 20 so readers have something to enjoy the morning after he pitches.

I couldn't agree more with the first paragraph. I have hated the sox deeply ever since the 86 playoffs. That's why, say what you will about Jeff Mathis, his double off of papelbon in 09 to keep series out of Boston was an all time favorite halo moment
1 year, 9 months ago on Defense breaks down; Angels Fall to Red Sox
Sure, games were left on the field, but it's ludicrous to believe"right at .500" had they lived up to defensive expectations. With this staff, and particularly the bullpen, we maybe inch a couple of games better in the win column, but not by very much.
1 year, 10 months ago on The scourge of the disappointing Angel defense
Your argument for why Aybar should hit last, just beofre Trout, is also why he should hit first in the lineup. His ability to run (20+ Sbs projected), make contact (K's 10% of ABs, well over .300 BaBIP annually so let him get the fastballs too), and get on base more than Petey, are the most salient points for his inclusion at the top. Why wait until the 3rd inning to see it? I would go:
Howie hitting 8th means his inning ending DP will be before the the guys who can run come up, but also gives the potential he powers one of those earlier guys around. Additionally, 2 Guys who can run before the meat of the order comes up places nice pressure on pitchers if any of them get on base, at least back when Scioscia believed in stealing bases.
2 years, 2 months ago on Should Josh Hamilton Bat 2nd in 2013
and he is CHEAP! When we get a few years down the line and a guy like Kershaw is up for bidding it will be nice to have a contributing player with a low salary. Also, though we are signing big names, I like pointing out to haters that the bulk of the team came up from our own minor leagues (at least until the last ten days)

Scotty, I would take everything you have predicted here.
2 years, 5 months ago on Peter Bourjos: Play him or trade him
I like the idea of him out there. If we trade for a real upgrade some place then fine, but I don't see much a big trade going down for the same reasons you offer for him staying. There are serviceable options out there in free agency so why would anyone need to trade with us? Especially for pitching that is so hard to find. We can't even use him as a throw-in on a bigger deal cuz we really have no other pieces. So I look forward to Speedy Petey being out there and circling the bases with his high socks. I know .240 will be a satisfying year but hope that Scioscia gets back to his small ball and this team starts stealing bases again.
BTW, when will the Monkey throw some fantastic sabermetric at us explaing why, in a league full of crappy catchers, the Angels don't steal or pinch run like they should? I know we have power bats now, but gotta be able to distract pitchers a little more.
Josh's best days are behind him without a doubt. In 3 years I see him as an Edgar Martinez type of professional hitter/DH/1B who can reliably hit .285 and get some air under the ball. 2 years after that? See ARod without steroids. There's no shame there, but nobody to give 7/175 mil. He just played too hard the last few years and hit the wall a few too many times. MTrout take notice...

The gold glove used to be fun to pay attention to. Thanks, baseball, for ruining it for no good reason. Jones over Trout or Austin Jackson? Ever watched Reddick play right? Do away with the silver slugger if the offense somehow is being measured in their gold glove value
2 years, 5 months ago on Gold Gloves announced to varying fanfare | October | 2012 Articles
I would be very content to take a one year on ol Danny and see if his health works out. I def think he has earned it and don't see many better options out there. The rotation is sort of stuck between spending big money to do any improving or trying to rebuild with no viable pieces. The in between option is to just throw any old journeyman out there and if that is the case, it may as well be a dedicated vet like Haren.
2 years, 5 months ago on Halo Headlines: Trout snubbed for Gold Glove, Santana hires new agent, expect Angels trades soon
Petey: faster center field who moves MT to right and keeps him from killing himself on the center field wall, much better on bases, potential leadoff hitter in front of the big boys, and, most importanly, CHEAPER.

2 years, 6 months ago on The Angels aren't as disappointing as you are led to believe
I agree with everyone's input. Trouble is, looking at this list, I can find very little of this that will change on it for next year. In fact, some things will worsen. I doubt Trout and Torii have as good years next year, I doubt Trumbo hits over .300 for 60% of the season, I doubt Kendrick realizes he can hit the ball in the air when there are runners on base, I doubt Richards blossoms, I doubt Jepsen and Walden blossom, and, unfortunately, for some reasn I doubt Zach comes back. Not being a total downer, I do see the bullpen improving becasue it can't get any worse, I do see being better than 6-14 through April, and I do see good ol fashioned luck being better than it was at times this year.
As for blame? I blame 22 blown saves. To finish within a few games of the lead in what, surprisingly, turned into the toughest division in baseball-and still have given up the lead 22 times during the year- is where the blame game begins for me.
2 years, 6 months ago on For the Angels, everyone is a scapegoat
I must say that 6-14 is pretty tough to overcome, but the way the boys have played since has been inspirational enough. Hats off to the last 82 up and 57 down of the season. And I will thow my hat into the motivational mood with...
On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that inch.

Sounds like a fitting punishment, but we all may be better served if sent to Texas with instructions to call for a sweep whenever LAA are in town.
Of course, baseball gods can see right through tricks like that so we may just have to kill this junior monkey as a sacrifice.

I also place a portion of the blame on the Monkey for calling out a sweep after one game into the series. This happened last Texas series and we went into a 10 day funk. When I saw it happen again 2 days ago, I feared the worst.
Maybe I am the jinx for thinking they will be jinxed.......Either way don't put me in that situation. It's S@#t like this that's gonna bring this situation to a head!
I don't mind going to closer in a nomral circumstance like that one, especially wanting Zach fresh down the line a bit, but never after a 30 pitch inning 24 hours prior. I bet he is kicking himself for that one

and why wasn't speedy Petey on the move knowing Howie was on deck? and why is Kendry swinging for the fences? When was the last "productive out" you remember from this team? Gotta know how to get that run over if you expect to do anything in the playoffs other than give me a migraine.

No, it is not just you. And he was a little too jacked for a 20 year old as well. I thought this since you posted the pic of him being hazed with a strapless dress, but didn't want to jinx things by pointing it out. Something we all know in baseball, players just aren't THAT good all of a sudden. Just ask our boys Bartolo or Melky. I don't blame him for the pitchers collapse, no one person could be guilty of so much stank, but where exactly does he rate better than Wilson? 2 years, 8 months ago on Angels Player Power Rankings - Week 20
The past few years I looked at the roster and didn't see a true leader like the boys had in 02. There was nobody to will them out of a funk. Not to diminish what Torii has brought. He is a true pro and leaves it all out there, but I don't think he has the grittiness to go out there and say "we ain't F%$#n' losing today". I think in 02 guys like Erstad, Percy and even the way Eck carried himself provided that. This year, as opposed to years past, I do see that character in guys like Trout and Trumbo, but they are likely just to young and new to force it out of others.Weaver definitley has it once every 5 days. I don't think AP does. The person who is supposed to be able to find it when nobody else can is the manager. Have you ever seen that side of Mike? It was def theere when he was playing, but is it there now? I can't say because it doesn't show on TV and I am not in the clubhouse, but my guess is that it left him sometime around '95
