@Messire Dirty is relative.  He's not Hansbrough.  He's an instigator, in the mold of Blake Griffin.

@N0tres @anonymous12345 The problem is comparing teams in different CBA's is difficult.  The tax is so much harsher than it was before.  If you look at the teams now that are over, only the Clippers are legit title contenders

@FunakiEjectsAnother [#StartLambFaction] For teams in the Western Conference playoff race, objects in the rearview mirror may be larger than they appear. That team coming up behind? It's the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Despite seeing their seven-game winning streak come to an end Thursday night at the hands of the West-leading Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena, the Thunder are still 8-2 since Russell Westbrook returned to the lineup on Nov. 28 and just 1½ games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

As a result, it's probably too late to talk about whether Oklahoma City's injuries will cause the team to miss the postseason. Barring another catastrophic series of maladies -- the "mild" sprained ankle Durant suffered Thursday doesn't qualify -- the Thunder will make the playoffs. Now the question has become: how many other teams Oklahoma City might pass between now and April.

Rolling Thunder

Before last night, Oklahoma City's lone loss since Durant returned came in his first game back, at New Orleans, on Dec. 2. It then reeled off a seven-game winning streak, one shy of its longest of 2013-14. With both Westbrook and Durant, Oklahoma City has outscored opponents by 8.7 points per game, best in the West in that span. The Thunder have enjoyed a relatively favorable schedule, but even after accounting for that, only Golden State has played better among the teams ahead of Oklahoma City in the standings.

The Thunder have been winning primarily with defense. Before a shootout with the Warriors, Oklahoma City's 95.7 defensive rating with both Westbrook and Durant in the lineup ranked second in the NBA during that stretch, trailing the Atlanta Hawks. The defense carried an offense that wasn't entirely clicking, with Durant struggling relative to his high standards before going off in the first half at Oakland. If Oklahoma City can get the MVP-level Durant at the same time as Westbrook is playing at an MVP level, look out.

The Thunder are already close to catching the teams that were battling for the eighth spot in the West. As of Thanksgiving, the day before Westbrook's return from hand surgery, Oklahoma City was five games back of the Phoenix Suns for eighth. Now the gap between those teams is a half-game. The Thunder have passed the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings, and also have the New Orleans Pelicans (1½ games up) in their sights.

Because all of the West's top teams continue winning, the Thunder haven't made up as much ground. Still, they have gained a full two games on the San Antonio Spurs to move within five of the defending champs.

How high can Oklahoma City climb?

Playoff projections like ESPN's Hollinger Playoff Odds that don't know Durant and Westbrook were injured still underrate the Thunder's chances of reaching the postseason. (The Hollinger Odds have them making the playoffs as about a 50-50 proposition.)

To adjust for that, I had Zachary Bradshaw of ESPN Stats & Info run 10,000 simulations of the remainder of the season using a version of ratings that combine preseason expectations and performance to date -- for everyone except Oklahoma City, which was rated only by preseason expectations. (It rates as the league's third-best team by this measure.)

These projections don't quite show the Thunder (which average 49 wins) as a sure thing for the playoffs, but do give them a better chance of winning the Northwest Division and earning a top-four seed (11.9 percent) than of ending up in the lottery (11.4). And more often than not, Oklahoma City jumps at least one West playoff team.
