The Toronto Maple Leaf

@ShotgunCharlie I would imagine both would garner 2nd round picks. Might be worth it because of our deficit of 2nd rounders, but they're hard workers and good examples for the prospects who will be joining the team.

@Pent_House If a pure center is not available, I'd take a D-man in the 6-10 range. It's far from guaranteed Rielly will be a 1D and even if he is, he will need a 2D to play with.
5 days, 15 hours ago on Game 47 Scoring Chances: Hurricanes 4 vs. Maple Leafs 1
@peterbleafs @The Toronto Maple Leaf I agree that that is the most likely scenerio, I'm just responding to the Oilers' tweet that their first was up for grabs for a young player further along the developmental road.
5 days, 16 hours ago on Game 47 Scoring Chances: Hurricanes 4 vs. Maple Leafs 1
Here is what we know about the Oilers situation (though I bet you they end up keeping it)- The Oilers want young players who are further along in their development.- They will most likely want two-way players, as they have enough one dimensional offensive players.- Their greatest weaknesses are at C and G.- It's going to take a lot to get that #1 pick.As pointed earlier, Rielly may be too young to be considered. In which case I would offer Kadri, Bernier, and either Gardiner or Franson. Keep our first overall. I would rather keep Kadri than JVR, but like I mentioned, I think they would be hoping for a more well rounded player.Only problem is, how much better does this make Edmonton? Could they go from bottom 3 pick to top 10 pick?
@wendelsfist @philthethrill Not nearly enough. We're talking getting a franchise centre back, You'd need tobe trading a potential all star.
@philthethrill Rielly + Beiner for their first might work, but still probably under the asking price.
@philthethrill I would trade Rielly for their pick.
Thank you very much for putting this together, it's a great resource and I am looking forward to seeing it updated! I am very encouraged by seeing Loov towards the top - do you see him as having a higher ceiling than Percy? Furthermore, is Finn still looking like a future Top 4 NHLer? His stock seems to have dropped quite a bit. Also, great to see how Brown has been doing this year. I wonder if Granberg is still in the picture after being so hyped two summers ago.
4 weeks ago on Maple Leafs Prospect Rankings – End of 2014
If we can somehow find a way to move Robidas, and the cap goes up to around 72,000,000 we should be able to keep Franson while making room for Percy. I doubt we can move Robidas, however, which will be a big problem as we start to get a log jam of young D ready to start coming up over the next two years.

Oof, Stuart Percy is -10 with no points.
So what is the nature of Percy and Granberg's injuries? How long are they out for?

Also, good on Clarkson. Still a bad contract, but at least it is not an abyss.
2 months ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
"Lightning head coach Jon Cooper, for what it’s worth, was scathing when it came to his team’s effort tonight: “We executed like it was the first day of training camp.”I think it is important to remember this, as the Bruins' coach offered a similar sentiment after our game against them. Perhaps the Lightning thought they could take the night off against the stumbling Leafs?Nonetheless, it was a good effort, but its all about consistency. 13 minutes for Kadri? 5 for Leivo? Reflects poorly on coaching. Even if we are not concerned with getting better short term (for purposes of picks) changing coaches would certainly help from a long term development standpoint.
@KingTon @TorontoMapleLeafs Just looked at that site, it is full of people who jumped ship from here. I liked quite a few of the guys, but its a lot of off-topic conversation over there which this site worked to move on from. It's too bad they left, but to be honest I'm glad all that off-topic conversation is gone from here.

(I do not count Gauthier as he is projecting to be more of a 3/4C)
I'd be interested to see a rough tally of who is hoping the Leafs finish in the bottom 5 or 7, and who is hoping for a playoff spot? This isn't just in reaction to the last two games, I don't think this team can have any meaningful success and if a bottom spot ensures another high draft pick and a roster shake up I would opt for that rather than continuing to move horizontally. We have Rielly and Nylander, now we need to surround them with a strong two-way center to round out a potential core that can compete in a few years.
@Anthony Petrielli @The Toronto Maple Leaf Excellent, thank you very much!
Are there any websites that track the Corsi and PDO percentages of teams across the league? I'm just looking to see how the teams are ranked in this regard.
@dlb Mad @The Toronto Maple Leaf Fair enough. I enjoyed it, I don't watch the Flames so it was useful for explaining their sudden rise and what we can reasonably expect from them. Most of what I've heard about the Flames is just that they compete and score well, so it was new to me.

@Mind Bomb I was just about to come on and ask about that as well. Since nothing has been reported, perhaps it is a mistake?
@kxbarillas As per 4/5, analytics have been moving towards showing what strategies are most effective and which are ineffective to maximize and minimize scoring against. We can say in hindsight that we could have figured that the 12/13 Leafs were winning in an unsustainable way. They maximized scoring through opportunistic scoring (cheating for rushes) and minimized scoring through unsustainably high goaltending, but the stats crowd said that could not be a foundation for success. During the analytics/watch with my eyes wars of the summer of 2013, the watch with my eyes crowd (which I admit I was with) thought that this team would take the next step and were generally disdainful of the analytics crowd. 2013/2014 proved who was right. Now we say we can tell with our eyes many of the things that analytics point out, but we now do this because we are better at knowing what to look out for thanks to analytics. As such, I disagree with your point 1 that every aspect of the game could be analyzed by watching alone. You need both, and will continue to need both as analytics continues to unveil new trends. In point 3 you say Neither can give you the picture on their own, which I agree with, but this goes against points 1 and 2 that the game could be analyzed by watching along, but isn't due to time restraints.

Thank you for putting together the article, I'm looking forward to the team analysis. One thing that might need correcting is that you have Holland with 2 goals and 2 assists, whereas he has 4 goals and 4 assists. Hope this helps!
2 months, 1 week ago on An Advanced Stats Look at Leaf Players through 18 games
Reimer has had a pretty solid season this year, every goalie has their off games. Remember Rask was pulled on Wednesday? Let's not erase all the goodwill he has earned because of last night. (I'm of the opinion that last season's collapse was concussion related from the run in on him with the Kings)The vehemence directed towards Reimer by some members of the fanbase on twitter/talk radio, etc. is shameful.
2 months, 1 week ago on Game Review: Game #18, Buffalo Sabres 6 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 2
Over the course of this long season for the Leafs, the reality is that they are a heavily flawed, capped out team that is poorly coached.
Leafs didn’t win the Cup on Wednesday when they beat the Bruins & they’re not being relegated after losing to Buffalo tonight. Long season

3 months, 3 weeks ago on Game Review: Preseason Game #8, Red Wings 3 vs. Maple Leafs 0
Does anyone think the Leafs are still toying with the idea of Lupul-Bozak-Kessel? They haven't tried Lupul on the top line, and it seems like pre-season would be the best of times to establish some chemistry.
3 months, 4 weeks ago on Game Review: Preseason Game #7, Maple Leafs 3 vs. Sabres 2 (SO)
Does Percy top out as a bottom pairing defenseman as had been suggested before camp, or do you think he could realistically be a good second pairing D a few years down the line?
3 months, 4 weeks ago on Game Review: Preseason Game #5, Maple Leafs 6 vs. Sabres 4
Great article. While I agree that they should try Lupul on the first line for scoring balance, I have a couple of reservations. Would having both Kessel and Lupul on the same line not lead to the first line becoming even more one-dimensional than it was last year? The numbers for Phil and Lupul in 2011-2012 have a prime aged Lupul, won't he be 31 this season? Will that continue to effect his numbers?Just some counterpoints, like I said I favour trying it out as well.

@Loric76 @The Toronto Maple Leaf Yeah, nice levity. Here's the breakdown for people who see this afterwards. It's a comic of a man sitting down with a woman at a party. He notices she is sleeping/passed out so he grabs her breast. That's it.

@Loric76 What's funny about this?
According to the Star, Brown is now 6"0.
Not to stir things up again, but here are just a few thoughts from someone who reads this site regularly but rarely posts (I'm sure there are many people in this camp, and most of the comments below are from regular posters).I agree with the direction that the mods are going in. The blog itself is, in my opinion, by far the best Leafs site on the web. The articles are well written, well thought out, and open minded. I don't mean to offend any posters here (I'm just giving an outsiders perspective which might be helpful to the mods). More often than not the tone of the boards does not match the tone of the articles. Even during the regular seasons the amount of bad music videos, jokes, anecdotes, details of people's own personal lives (what they're drinking, smoking, BBQing, what the wife is nagging about, what household chores are required ect) somewhat cheapens the website's brand. The comments sometimes feel like you've entered a chat room of friends who happen to be Leafs fans. Because of this the posters that do spend all day here become a very tight group, and as such, even though unintentionally, it feels difficult to join in hockey discussions as it does feel like something of an established club.People down below were saying no one has ever been made to feel unwelcome here. I certainly have! For context I'm not a stats guy per se, but after last season it's hard not to see the evidence of their efficacy in long term predictions. I mentioned something about stats (not as a zealot) and was immediately told by phook to go away. I defended myself and he replied that he doesn't care about my comments. My point is, the place seems welcoming if you're a regular, and most of the people here are good people, but there are lots of things that do hold people back from joining (not feeling part of the club, the rudeness of some members who have been banned like Phook and Fenton, having difficulty finding relevant hockey talk) that might not be obvious if you are one of the regulars. Even if bans meant that the chat died down a bit, that is fine! This is a comment section and quality should trump quantity. When nobody is posting here, because there is nothing to post about, you often get a lot of complaints about how it is dead here and then random off topic discussion. But why does there have to be constant discussion? If people want to shoot the shit can't they just talk to their real-life friends or add MHLS friends to a chat room type discussion? I know the site can be addictive, but it might be healthy to take a step back and evaluate one's dependence on hanging out in the comment section.Once again, I hope I haven't offended anyone, and I hope it has been helpful to hear from someone who might be representative of a lot of people who read the blog posts but don't commit to posting.
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Sunday Mashup: ‘Legends Row’ a great gesture, ‘Fan Fest’ goes septic
@dlb Mad It needs to be pointed out that absolutely nobody is advocating reading spreadsheets at the expense of watching games. They illuminate (sorry Burke) aspects of play and long term trends that are hard to detect from purely watching games.
5 months ago on Friday Mashup: Leiweke not long for Toronto
@Chichikov I agree. I think MHLS is far and away the best source of Maple Leafs content, but there are some posters here (and I'm thinking of one in particular) who show up in every thread and bully/dismiss anyone with different views. The tone around here is often mean spirited, and its a shame because the blog deserves better than this. But I'm sure nobody really cares.
