The Toronto Maple Leaf

It's very important for us that Tampa beat Nashville. If Nashville wins they will be second in the league and lead their conference which really hurts our Nashville draft pick.

@wiski The problem with the Leafs is that they aren't a very good team, not that no one is trying.

@DeclanK What happened?
3 days, 7 hours ago on GDT: Game #74, Minnesota Wild at Toronto Maple Leafs (7:30 p.m., TSN4)
@mtommy I wasn't around for Wendel/Gilmour era but in a way I wish it hadn't happened. It's created an unrealistic expectation that captains need to fight often to show heart and leadership. Last time Phaneuf fought a guy he was out for a month because he injured his hand.
5 days, 7 hours ago on GDT: Game #73, Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Ottawa Senators (7 p.m., HNIC)
@Zep2 I'd go with Hanifin, if almost every scout has him ranked at 3 that means he is most likely the BPA. Plus, it's not a sure thing that Rielly will turn into a legit 1D, and even if so he will need a partner. Most of our D prospects under Rielly seem like bottom 4 players.

With William Nylander playing in the AHL, are we burning a year off his entry level contract? Will he reach UFA status a year earlier?
@Yaknowwhat Not to mention all the teenagers and young kids whose only playoff experience was the Bruins collapse.

@traNsplantEdneWfie All he's saying is that it is a big monetary commitment for MLSE to make. Which it is. Still a good deal.
4 weeks ago on GDT: Game #61, Philadelphia Flyers at Toronto Maple Leafs (7:30 p.m., TSN)
@Claymish Hanifin is the first guy I'd want from that group. Him and Rielly would be our top pairing, and we could get a center next year when we're in the running for a bottom 3 pick.

@Burn_the_Loov_Boats @Nylanderthal @The Toronto Maple Leaf Buffalo should improve quite a bit next year by virtue of McDavid/Eichel alone, not to mention all the young first rounders they've piled up slowing becoming ready to join/make some sort of impact. I'm not saying playoffs, but 5th-12th last could be possible for them.
1 month, 1 week ago on Bob McKenzie on Tyler Bozak & Dion Phaneuf interest, Phil Kessel rumours
Remember with this rebuild that starting next year the top 3 picks are all lottery picks. We could finish dead last for the next 3 years but still land as low as a 4th pick.
@wiski @mcloki I guess you don't need to know what a comma is to be a hockey commentator.
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Game 54 Scoring Chances: Maple Leafs 5 vs. Oilers 1
@Weekend_at_Berniers Ashton was never given a shot in toronto. He would play about 4-5 minutes with Orr or Smith despite doing well in the OHL.
1 month, 2 weeks ago on GDT: Game #53, Toronto Maple Leafs at New Jersey Devils (7 p.m., SNO)
@wiski @The Toronto Maple Leaf You can give away worse players than Ashton for contract spots. At worst he is a proven scorer for the Marlies whose success helps our prospects.
Jesus, that trade was awful. At least try Ashton out for around 10 games at over 8 minutes a night before deciding to trade him ALONG with Broll for a CONDITIONAL 7th rounder. What does that even mean? If they dont both score 20 goeals each no picks at all?
As great as it would be, we need to stop theorizing that Bettman will rig the lottery for us. I found a post elsewhere explaining how the lottery works - turns out it is legit. This post is from hfboards:" all 30 teams have a representative observing the process.
The process is supervised by a major accounting firm (Ernst & Young) and all 30 teams have representatives observing.http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/peng...ttery-1.559504

@Burtonboy @nrandreycharles More likely Robidas.

@Anthony Petrielli @The Toronto Maple Leaf @DeclanK Would whether the players are generating or not matter? Or is it all taken within context?
1 month, 3 weeks ago on GDT: Game #49, New Jersey Devils vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (7:30 p.m., SN)
@DeclanK Now I don't know how to feel. It seems like a must lose game, but we want them to look good for the scouts.
If the Leafs can get a first rounder make the trade ASAP. It's a strong draft and they will probably finish in the 10-20 range.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Wednesday Mashup: Back At It vs. Devils
@Cameron19 I would try and sell Franson ASAP for that reason, though I imagine other teams might want to see what Franson looks like without Phaneuf now that they have the chance before committing.
1 month, 4 weeks ago on Tuesday Mashup: Life without Dion
This isn't much better but I would tryGardiner - FransonRielly - PolakPercy - Holzer/Granberg
@DCDC At the same time, you don't want to throw him into the deep end after only one and a half seasons in the NHL.
@ShotgunCharlie I would imagine both would garner 2nd round picks. Might be worth it because of our deficit of 2nd rounders, but they're hard workers and good examples for the prospects who will be joining the team.
2 months ago on Wednesday Mashup: Tank Battles of Ontario
@Pent_House If a pure center is not available, I'd take a D-man in the 6-10 range. It's far from guaranteed Rielly will be a 1D and even if he is, he will need a 2D to play with.
2 months ago on Game 47 Scoring Chances: Hurricanes 4 vs. Maple Leafs 1
@peterbleafs @The Toronto Maple Leaf I agree that that is the most likely scenerio, I'm just responding to the Oilers' tweet that their first was up for grabs for a young player further along the developmental road.
Here is what we know about the Oilers situation (though I bet you they end up keeping it)- The Oilers want young players who are further along in their development.- They will most likely want two-way players, as they have enough one dimensional offensive players.- Their greatest weaknesses are at C and G.- It's going to take a lot to get that #1 pick.As pointed earlier, Rielly may be too young to be considered. In which case I would offer Kadri, Bernier, and either Gardiner or Franson. Keep our first overall. I would rather keep Kadri than JVR, but like I mentioned, I think they would be hoping for a more well rounded player.Only problem is, how much better does this make Edmonton? Could they go from bottom 3 pick to top 10 pick?
@wendelsfist @philthethrill Not nearly enough. We're talking getting a franchise centre back, You'd need tobe trading a potential all star.
@philthethrill Rielly + Beiner for their first might work, but still probably under the asking price.
@philthethrill I would trade Rielly for their pick.
Thank you very much for putting this together, it's a great resource and I am looking forward to seeing it updated! I am very encouraged by seeing Loov towards the top - do you see him as having a higher ceiling than Percy? Furthermore, is Finn still looking like a future Top 4 NHLer? His stock seems to have dropped quite a bit. Also, great to see how Brown has been doing this year. I wonder if Granberg is still in the picture after being so hyped two summers ago.
2 months, 4 weeks ago on Maple Leafs Prospect Rankings – End of 2014
If we can somehow find a way to move Robidas, and the cap goes up to around 72,000,000 we should be able to keep Franson while making room for Percy. I doubt we can move Robidas, however, which will be a big problem as we start to get a log jam of young D ready to start coming up over the next two years.

Oof, Stuart Percy is -10 with no points.
So what is the nature of Percy and Granberg's injuries? How long are they out for?

Also, good on Clarkson. Still a bad contract, but at least it is not an abyss.
4 months ago on Game Review: Game #20, Maple Leafs 5 vs. Lightning 2
"Lightning head coach Jon Cooper, for what it’s worth, was scathing when it came to his team’s effort tonight: “We executed like it was the first day of training camp.”I think it is important to remember this, as the Bruins' coach offered a similar sentiment after our game against them. Perhaps the Lightning thought they could take the night off against the stumbling Leafs?Nonetheless, it was a good effort, but its all about consistency. 13 minutes for Kadri? 5 for Leivo? Reflects poorly on coaching. Even if we are not concerned with getting better short term (for purposes of picks) changing coaches would certainly help from a long term development standpoint.
@KingTon @TorontoMapleLeafs Just looked at that site, it is full of people who jumped ship from here. I liked quite a few of the guys, but its a lot of off-topic conversation over there which this site worked to move on from. It's too bad they left, but to be honest I'm glad all that off-topic conversation is gone from here.

(I do not count Gauthier as he is projecting to be more of a 3/4C)
I'd be interested to see a rough tally of who is hoping the Leafs finish in the bottom 5 or 7, and who is hoping for a playoff spot? This isn't just in reaction to the last two games, I don't think this team can have any meaningful success and if a bottom spot ensures another high draft pick and a roster shake up I would opt for that rather than continuing to move horizontally. We have Rielly and Nylander, now we need to surround them with a strong two-way center to round out a potential core that can compete in a few years.
@Anthony Petrielli @The Toronto Maple Leaf Excellent, thank you very much!
Are there any websites that track the Corsi and PDO percentages of teams across the league? I'm just looking to see how the teams are ranked in this regard.
@dlb Mad @The Toronto Maple Leaf Fair enough. I enjoyed it, I don't watch the Flames so it was useful for explaining their sudden rise and what we can reasonably expect from them. Most of what I've heard about the Flames is just that they compete and score well, so it was new to me.

@dlb Mad Wait, why do you feel sorry for him?
@Burtonboy @Mind Bomb Maybe Yahoo made the mistake between the two?

@Mind Bomb I was just about to come on and ask about that as well. Since nothing has been reported, perhaps it is a mistake?
@kxbarillas As per 4/5, analytics have been moving towards showing what strategies are most effective and which are ineffective to maximize and minimize scoring against. We can say in hindsight that we could have figured that the 12/13 Leafs were winning in an unsustainable way. They maximized scoring through opportunistic scoring (cheating for rushes) and minimized scoring through unsustainably high goaltending, but the stats crowd said that could not be a foundation for success. During the analytics/watch with my eyes wars of the summer of 2013, the watch with my eyes crowd (which I admit I was with) thought that this team would take the next step and were generally disdainful of the analytics crowd. 2013/2014 proved who was right. Now we say we can tell with our eyes many of the things that analytics point out, but we now do this because we are better at knowing what to look out for thanks to analytics. As such, I disagree with your point 1 that every aspect of the game could be analyzed by watching alone. You need both, and will continue to need both as analytics continues to unveil new trends. In point 3 you say Neither can give you the picture on their own, which I agree with, but this goes against points 1 and 2 that the game could be analyzed by watching along, but isn't due to time restraints.

Thank you for putting together the article, I'm looking forward to the team analysis. One thing that might need correcting is that you have Holland with 2 goals and 2 assists, whereas he has 4 goals and 4 assists. Hope this helps!
