Agree that Green is ready, now. But, Evan Gattis, Braves isn't a top prospect, as he'll be 26 this week and is in only his second year of full season ball. Why use a roster slot for such a long-shot, who will discover the A pitchers and MLB pitchers are vastly different.
@JLFCASH Yes! And, maybe a team option for a third year to serve as a Community Relations speaker [for somewhat less money].
2 years, 8 months ago on The David Ortiz Dilemma: Is He Worth a Long-Term Deal?
First, Bud needs to listen to my idea about letting the active players elect the basic roster [http://bosoxinjection.com/2012/06/28/all-star-game-player-selection-new-rules-this-buds-for-you/]
Second, I agree that Napoli is not deserving this year; he is an example of fans voting him in on his 2011 performance. That way, Salty could have made the roster.
Salty is coming along with his defense, but is a long way from matching Weiters and Mauer...

Since the Marlins are desperate for a ML catcher [John Buck on defense is always too late and a dollar short], let's get Lavarnway to Fenway and package Shoppach and The Posednik Adventure to get a quality pitcher. EX: Jose Fernandez: "The Marlins’ first-rounder from 2011 has a great combination of stuff and a feel for pitching, especially for a high-school draftee. He can run his fastball up to 97 mph. His slider could be a plus out pitch in the future, a nasty breaking ball with late movement. He has feel for a changeup but will have to improve it as he starts his pro career. He has pretty good command, especially for his age and experience. As long as he stays on top of his conditioning, he has the potential to be a No. 2-type starter."
The Nats might go 1-1 for Lannan, but I would rather get Ty Clippard, who can start and relieve...
2 years, 8 months ago on Red Sox Trade Rumors: Scott Podsednik Appeals to Marlins & Nationals
I'll go with Marrero; he has the best across-the-board skills. Think: Petrocelli or Garciparra.
Iglesias has the best glove, but still hits with a wet, rolled-up newspaper.
Lin is a lefty hitter and could find a spot in a L-R platoon.
Bogey will likely outgrow SS and, with Middlebrooks looking All-Star, will likely go OF, maybe 1b.
Aviles has surprised the skeptics and is keeping SS warm for the SS of The Future...
2 years, 8 months ago on Who Is The Shortstop Of The Future?
Give Papi a 3-year deal; first year guaranteed base salary with lots of incentives for performance; next two years, team option to continue on same basis.

OK, Parra for Youkilis AND Crawford...
Gee, weren't the Sox asking this question all spring: “do we overpay for a starter?” If they are still serious about contending, the need to put Bard back in the pen and trade prospects and/or Youk for a pitcher like Joe Saunders or Wandy Rodriguez...
2 years, 8 months ago on Red Sox Trade Rumors: Youkilis, Garza & Dempster
How about a SP and an OF? Send 3 prospects to Astros for Wandy Rod and send Youk [plus pay some of his salary] to Phillies for Shane Victorino?
2 years, 8 months ago on It's Time For the Red Sox To Unleash Will Middlebrooks & Trade Kevin Youkilis
@JLFCASH If they are making a run for the post-season this year, I would like a deal for Gavin Floyd (last year of contract @ $7 M). Sox pay the $5M difference in Youk's salary and toss in Anderson? If Floyd does well, Sox have an option year in 2013 @ $9.5 M...Or, they could have Wandy Rod for just prospects and trade Youk elsewhere?
@Michael Lavery IF Youk can return to form for a while, the Sox might get Joe Saunders from the 'Backs or Joe Blanton from the Phils, if they will pick up a portion of his $12 million tab. Since the Sox have not yet tipped into the Seller column this season, getting a prospect is not appealing. If the Sox are still Pennant Pretenders, they need to get serious and acquire a #3/#4 starter for Youk, money, and prospects soon.
IF the Sox are smart, they wait until Youk goes on a hitting streak to get max value in return; no, Max Value is NOT a prospect. A reliable veteran #4 rotation pitcher is what the Sox need and they may need to toss in a prospect [Anderson?] to get it...
A perfect platoon partner for Igesias; Lin bats against RHPs, Iglesias vs. LHPs; neither hits over .220, but there's always the "runs saved" factor to consider...

2 years, 8 months ago on SF Giants Drop the Ball in 2012 Player Draft | June
Great summary of the players' stats an skill sets! Johnson might be ready for The Show in 2014 and Marrero is AAA+ right now. Light is a project with a great physical frame. I think the Sox were surprised that Marrero was still on the board at 24.
2 years, 9 months ago on How The Red Sox Fared In The 2012 Draft
@Derek Stykalo @Michael @Michael @EarlNash Derek...I think Castro would be a regular at SS for many years...I would be willing to give up 3 prospects: Iglesias, Anderson, Brentz for Castro; I would want to hold onto Renaudo and Barnes, so we won't need to go shopping for SPs again; maybe Theo would like that Carpenter guy?

@Michael Lavery Marcum for Youk would be a very good deal for the Sox; I rank Marcum with Wandy Rod, since Rod is a LHP. Marcum's 2.65 to 1 K-W ratio is impressive...Youk would play at 1b and Hart would return to his OF position and the Brew Crew would be giving up their #4 rotation guy. Great thanks for the idea!
2 years, 9 months ago on Shipping Out Youk for a Starter, Who are the 7 Sox Trading Partners?
Castro can become a franchise SS. Based on the deals made between Ben Cherry and Thiefo Epstein, I would expect the Cubs' GM would want all ten of the Sox top prospects and the gold fillings from Tom Yawkey.
Shoppach for Lannan? Lavarnway to Fenway.
2 years, 9 months ago on Red Sox Trade Rumors: Nationals Interested in Shoppach and Salty
I think Doubrant should stay in the rotation; a good LHP is hard to replace.
I think the White Sox need a young 1b [Lars Anderson] and Youk and would deal for Floyd.
Send Bard back to the pen. Valentine was not impressed with Dicey K's mechanics recently. Cook may already be "fried." Sending Middlebrooks back to AAA would be a stupid move; Youk is gone at some point in 2012, so leave the kid alone. Also, trade Shoppach and get Lavarnway up here.
2 years, 9 months ago on Does Trading Kevin Youkilis For Joe Blanton Make Sense?
Sox would likely want a Pitcher in return. Might add in Lars Anderson with Shoppach and get Lannan in return?
@JLFCASH Good ideas. Beckett would have to agree to go to Oakland; he has a right to refuse to be traded to any team. I was guessing he might go to a serious contender. Also, with that 7,000 acre ranch in Texas and his home there too, I would think he would jump at the Texas Rangers. The problem is, what would they be willing to give up in trade? The Sox would want pitchers in return. There is always the 3-way deal, but those are difficult to pull off...

Great post! I think guys like Lannan [for Anderson and Bowden], or Gavin Floyd, or Wandy Rodriguez can be had for a reasonable price. And, yes, a veteran lefty like Mike Gonzalez would be a great investment.
@terumoto Good catch! Yes, one sows dissension like one broadcasts seed into a field. The only sewing should relate to Mr. Schilling's lips...Great thanks for your encouragement--that IS a positive thing...Yours in Sowing the Truth, Earl

@Kerryman Great thanks for that correction. Imagine, for 32 years I was an English professor; I taught writing classes...[sigh] Glad to know that someone is reading my posts! Yours in Baseball, Earl [or, is the baseball's?]
I think "lil_bit_special" has a good point. And, many teams are waiting to see who the other guys cut; hoping for a gem to fall into their lap via waiver wire. As a Sox fan, I would love to see your trade made. Maybe the Sox could seek a veteran for the bullpen? The A's like Cal. players and Lars fits the bill; they have a logjam at 1b of iron glove guys and would give Lars a shot at OF. I would want Brian Fuentes for the Sox pen; a veteran LHP who has a track record as a closer. Toss Lars and Swihart to Oakland and you might have a deal. SD just acquired Yonder Alonso, who has a bright future, if he can be satisfied with lots of line drive doubles at Petco and HRs on the road. Or maybe the A's would give up Eric Sogard (plays 2b,SS,3b)...Another intriguing SD pitcher might be had for two mid-lever prospects; Brad Boxberger, who has Future Closer talent:
"Boxberger posted a 2.03 ERA in 55 games combined at Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Louisville. He saved 11 games and finished 34 with 28 walks and 93 strikeouts in only 62 innings. His first seven outs of the AFL season and 11 of his first 17 were recorded via the strikeout."
When concocting trades, I try evaluate the needs of other teams and try to find a prospect that might be a good fit for them. [Can't think of any team that is looking for a 1b right now.] KC is desperate for a closer...If Bard or Aceves is headed back to the pen...they could take the set-up role and you could deal Melancon for..say...Bubba Starling, Mike Montgomery, and they would toss in LHP John Lamb (recovering from TJ surgery). Also, the Royals have pushed Gordon into the OF at age 28 and have younger OF ready to play. Recall he came up as a 3b and has played more games at the hot corner (329) than any other position. He bats L and at .262 could back up in OF and 3b...The Royals might even go 1-1 with Melancon...
I am enjoying your posts!

@Lestahh17 Yes, we have been having problems with our computer posting service; I posted it with the intention of then revising it, but the system went down and I went to bed. I meant to get back to it and make the correction today, but got wrapped up in research for a long article on the best line-up for the Red Sox. It is now corrected. You will note that it is our standard practice to credit sources in our stories; see my post coming next about the lineups. A good wake up call to not get to rushed and careless. Thanks!

Hmmm...Baseball Ref. projects him for 2012:
162 Game Avg. 10-14, 4.00 ERA, 34 GS, 199 IP
WHIP 1.423 K/W ratio 1.39
A LHP would be a bonus...

Beat writers are narrow-minded and biased (a few are still racist: toward blacks, Hispanics, Asians). The guys who are doing the job are the ones best qualified to judge performance. Let the players elect their peers to the HOF.

@JLFCASH Yes, ideally Aceves remains in the pen. I like the idea of trading for Wandy; the Astros are willing to eat some of his salary and I think the Sox can send a bag o' prospects to Hapless Houston and still keep their best ones. I made my case in an earlier post: http://bosoxinjection.com/2012/01/04/q-where-can-cherington-find-a-young-mlb-proven-lefty-starter-for-the-3-slot/
3 years, 1 month ago on URGENT MEMO TO BEN: magazine says Yanks better than Sox, STAT!
I agree with your take. James' major assumptions are: (1) Ells will bat lead-off again and (2) some built in bias that "what goes up, must come down." A manager might slot Ells in the 3 hole and that would shift the power numbers. Also, Tito seemed to be asleep at the wheel regarding steal opps last season; how many times did Crawford get to first, only to linger at that bag...I think Valentine will use his speed to better effect and increase Ells' SB total; in fact, I think Bobby V will rack up more team runs and RBIs than Tito...BTW, those 10 nay votes in the poll?
