I don't think the first half of Sunday's game was respectable at all, but I'm not ready to thrown anyone under the bus for it. A few points:
1) Didn't the Manning Colts have the same problem of playing down to their opponents?
2) Which team in the NFL this year is beating the teams they "should beat" consistently?
3) We had the bootleg covered every single time. Keenum simply avoided the pressure and made plays.
4) Maybe the Texans aren't that bad - they did lose to KC by only 1 point...(Weak argument, I know, but still).
Other than that, I must say last night is why I love being a Colts fan. Game ain't over 'till the fat lady sings.

This annoys the heck out of me: Donald Brown gets on the field, and his first run goes for 52 yards. His next play is a 9 yard reception. Why take him out? His next two plays are 9 and 10 yard runs - and then he's done. Why?
I'm just going to say it. Donald Brown outplayed TRich today. Every time he touched the ball, he gained at least 9 yards. Why the heck wasn't he in more? Where is the "go with the hot hand" mentality?

@matt_has Quick note: Collie was more open, but Wayne was open, too. For that matter, Garcon could have been open in a second: it's a cover-1, which means good receivers will get open. Peyton was just going to his veteran, hands receiver. The receiver let him down.

I think the only option is to take Luck. People talk about "waiting 2 years for the next once-in-a-generation QB", but who's to say we will have the pick to take that person?

Random thought. The year Elway was drafted, there was this QB that went #27th in the draft. Depending on how you look at it, he may have been a better QB than Elway. His name? Dan Marino.

Off topic, sort of, but Ray Lewis called it when he said the Colts without Peyton are a very below-average team:
@kasey_junk Ok, will someone explain to me why Cowher is a bad idea? I'm not contesting, I just know he seemed to do well with the Steelers...and I haven't heard the argument behind hating him.
@dmstorm22@DougEngland With regard to Tebow, that's my point. I think he's inspired the team to be something great, something Orton didn't do. He's a polarizing figure, and the team is behind him, and consequently doing well.
2 years, 7 months ago on Mythbusting
@kasey_junk@WillyDuer As a fantasy owner of Calvin Johnson, I can tell you that he can in fact be stopped. :P
@DougEngland As a staunch supporter of Tebowmania (Sure. He's got a D. But didn't Kyle Orton?), I watched part of the Bears-Broncos game yesterday, and Jennings played 10 yards off of the WR's, and let one get out of bounds in a 2 min drill (EPIC FAIL.) He's the same Tim Jennings.
With regards to Lacy, I remember the Titans game back in his Rookie year...he made some sick plays. I don't know what's happened since then.
@Nate Dunlevy Ok, just wondering. BTW, how do you watch the whole game after? DVR, or some service or what?

Am I the only one who thinks the point is moot? Either Peyton won't play again and the Colts draft Luck, or he does play again..and the Colts draft Luck (barring some "no I won't play!" from either...)

@Nate Dunlevy Definitely agree on that last point. Have you had a chance to see the replays? The one on the sideline prior to his 2nd TD was amazing.
2 years, 7 months ago on Amoral Victory
And Nate, a quick note: you keep mentioning how good Garcon has been in the last 16 games...but this last game, most of his work came in garbage time. I love Garcon to death, but isn't it a little unfair to say that Orlovsky's numbers were "garbage time" while saying that Garcon's somehow count?
Again, I love Garçon, but I just wonder if this is a consistent argument...
If you think any of our QB's are good, go back and watch the '09 Colts-Pats game.
Remember the glory? Coming back from 31-14? The thrill of Wayne's amazing catch at the end? That was a BAD day for Peyton: He had two bad throws for picks. We still won the game in thrilling fashion.
Every time I want to believe the lie that Orlovsky is good, I just have to go back and reestablish my perspective.
Dang, I miss Peyton.

@squirrel@mattshedd@keep_the_eraser Agreed. But an 80% Manning is better than Painter any day of the week. (See 2008)
@mattshedd@keep_the_eraser To hear Polian talk last night, 100% of Painter is better than 80% of Manning. I'm not a Polian-hater, but that's ludicrous.
@mattshedd True. But that only further validates the argument of keeping both...
Nate, a random thought I had:
If the Colts drafted Luck and kept Manning, do you think both would be willing to take a pay cut? If I'm Luck, I'd be willing to make less if I get to study under the best quarterback ever...and perhaps Manning would be willing to take less given the injury. Don't all sides win in that scenario?
Otherwise, I think you're totally right. There's no point in keeping both...and unfortunately, Luck is the smart, long-term choice.
@mattshedd I was literally yelling at the TV "GIVE THE BALL TO BROWN!!!" I'm really excited to see what Brown can do next year while people are busy paying attention to Luck/Manning. He's got some serious star power.

@Nate Dunlevy Hey man, keep your head up. You're doing great work, and frankly, even whenI disagree with you, I appreciate that you've got the guts to say what you think, even when it boils down to "we're not going to be good this year and our qb's suck".
Just a thought, have you considered asking some of the people who disagree with you to write their own opinion/prediction article? It's awful easy to criticize when one's own reputation isn't on the line.
@kc6624 And given that Painter wore pink on Monday night, it looks like we've got our choice. ;)
Polian talks about drafting players for their "intelligence". Collins has talked about this offense being "nothing like anything he ever played in." Perhaps that's why the Colts kept Painter, not as much for his physical skills as because he could understand the offense?
Just a thought.
@Nate Dunlevy And Nate, last week I stood up for Painter and said that he was better than Collins. I'll freely admit that I was wrong, as your article masterfully points out. Keep up the good work. :)
@Nate Dunlevy@niko_cccc Just a point on why Painter "Looks better":
I think people like Painter mainly cause he didn't appear lost. Collins fumbled a snap and a throw against Houston, and it made him seem utterly incompetent. In the next couple games he didn't do anything amazing to erase that memory.
On the other hand, Painter came in and led a meaningful TD drive against Pitt, and had two meaningful TD's against Tampa Bay. No, the 2 TD's against TB were not his own doing, but that's beside the point. Collins' dumb luck was two ridiculous fumbles against Houston, Painter's dumb luck resulted in 14 points. Though this has no real meaning, it does skew perception.
I'm not saying this makes Painter better (though I personally think he WILL improve. You can't tell me Manning hasn't gotten better since year 3.) What I am saying is that first impressions are definitely skewing perceptions. Collins came across as hopeless, and Painter came in and brought some hope.
Last night I realized that Freeney should be an automatic HOF. Unless I'm mistaken, he didn't record a sack last night, but it was OBVIOUS that he was creating havoc. Perhaps "Sacks" is a number that lies?
2 years, 9 months ago on Remedial School
@DougEngland I said something very similar before I read this, and I couldn't agree more. Painter didn't look lost out there, and that made the game much more interesting to watch.
I think what makes fans (including myself) like Painter better than Collins is that he doesn't look lost out there. He points at guys, audibles, and licks his fingers, and you have to admit it makes him appear competent. Of course, in the long run he achieves the same result, a loss, so the point is moot...but at least Painter is more fun to watch.
@blessedwhiteeyes I'm not complaining!
2 years, 9 months ago on Colts Bucs Open Thread
@Shane Curry Not that it matters, but Painter played against the first/second teams in these games, while Brandstater played against 3rd/4th teamers. This is a case where the number aren't going to be terribly accurate.
2 years, 9 months ago on What if Painter Plays Well ?
A DB once said that Marvin Harrison was the hardest WR to cover, because all his routes looked the same for the first 10 yards...sounds like Wayne learned from the best.
2 years, 9 months ago on Wayne demands respect
@DougEngland Dead on about the body language. I thought Painter "looked" good vs. Pittsburgh, probably part of the reason fans have such a positive impression of him.
@mattshedd I think Marlin Jackson should be there, just because of his interception. ;) jk
2 years, 9 months ago on Thursday Open Thread-Farewell Gary Brackett
@Nate Dunlevy 1. Again, as I pointed out below, 10 of Addai's yards were negated by a holding penalty. You make it sound as if Painter only had a measly 3 through the air, when in fact we had a first and goal at the 12 yard line, of which Addai only picked up the last 3.
2. Painter's lack of throwing skills play to his advantage here. Everyone knows that Garcon only catches if it's an impossibly bad throw. ;)
3. I'd like to point out that he started 0-3, and finished 5/8. One of his passes was into the turf on a blown screen play. And he did go into the game cold. (quoting Polian there.)
4. Three years? Are you referring to 2 games his rookie year, and then the preseason for the other two? He hasn't played with the Colts' starters except for this year, am I not correct?
Here's the thing. Since Manning's injury, Painter put up an okt performance against GB, and an ok performance against Pitt. That is marked improvement over Paintergate. Perhaps he's stepping up his game due to the insult of the Collins pickup?
Of course, one of us is going to be proven very wrong on Monday night. Long term, I hope it's me (High draft pick, baby!), but my inner Colt still wants to win every game.
2 years, 9 months ago on All the Colts Really Need is a Quarterback
@pierrezombie Case in point being that if he is truly as bad as most believe, we're one game closer to drafting Andrew Luck. If he's not, then we suddenly have a viable backup. I don't see how we can lose in that scenario.
2 years, 10 months ago on All the Colts Really Need is a Quarterback
@blessedwhiteeyes IN theory, I agree. In this particular case, I seem to remember it sailing well out of bounds: not a case of the timing being off, but the accuracy just not being there. I didn't see a replay, though, so I can't be sure that was the case.
Frankly, I have to disagree with you, Nate. (I know, I'm no football wiz, but still.)
Collins hasn't yet led us to a meaningful TD in two and a half games, while Painter did on his 4th drive, in a clutch situation against the Steelers' Defense. Collins also had the chance to lead not one, but two game-changing drives against the Browns, and we saw what happened there.
Yes, Addai, ran for 17 yards on two carries in the red zone, but recall that there was a holding penalty that set us back 10 of those. (And Painter threw two red zone completions, the second being the pass to Clark that set up the TD run.) But what it boils down to? We did, in fact, score a meaningful TD. Collins can't say that.
Thirdly, Collins missed BADLY on several throws where he wasn't even rushed. (In particular, I'm thinking of a curl route to Wayne which he threw out of bounds on the left side.) Painter also missed on 2 throws at least, but I didn't feel like either of them were nearly that bad, and both of them came on his couple drives. His two throws to Garcon on the TD drive were crisp and on target. He hit Clark in the hands on another, and Clark flat out dropped it.
Now, while I don't think that proves that Painter is any good (another fumble, seriously?), I do think it merits giving him a chance to prove himself. You mention that he has terrible pocket presence. Didn't Collins have the same problem game 1? It was clear that he fixed it games 2 and 3. Perhaps Painter just needs some time to get through the growing pains. Note that he hasn't played a game from start to finish his whole career.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Painter will be a great QB. However, I DO think he will give us a better chance to win than Collins has. The Colts have kept him for a reason, and I think he deserves a full game to show what he's got.
And frankly, what do we have to lose?
@Nate Dunlevy Collins brought the ball forward in a throwing motion, then brought it back to the "ready" position, and that's when he fumbled. Isn't that incomplete by the tuck rule?
2 years, 10 months ago on Colts fall 34-7 to Texans
