If I am Sven Nys, $335 is justifiable. If I am just some Masters hack in the NCCX, or any other stateside CX, forget about it. When the peasants revolt, after they execute the overpaid CEOs, they are coming after the cyclists with the $335 cassettes/$10K bikes.

The first 2 seasons I did cross, no one else in my racing club joined me. At the beginning of the 3rd season, four of the women joined in and all went on to aquit themselves admirably in the NCCX series that year. At the last workout before the first race, I expressed the view above regarding crashing in cross. I then proceeded to break 4 ribs, graze a lung, sprain a shoulder (all in the State Championship race) and have since gone on to sprain an ankle and totally trash my hip flexor tendon, not to mention break a few helmets. O.K., it took 9 seasons to accumulate this damage, but I have reconsidered my positon on cross crashes not being so bad - maybe not the end of the world, but more than one season ended early.

K-edge makes a cross specific catcher as well as a road version. The K-edge road version looks very similar (identical?) to the SRAM. In talking to K-edge, they do not recommend the road version as it is fragile in a cross environment. The K-edge cross version, while pricery, is a very different design and very durable, easy to install, adjusts easily and will work with most any drive train. I have found it to be very effective. One thing, though - if you have a top tube routed front derailleur cable, ensure the location of the cable pulley leaves room for the chain catcher. I had no problems with my vintage Specialilzed (circa 2001) S-works, but my new Ridley X-ride mounts the pulley lower and barely leaves room for the chain catcher to mount in an effective positon.

Great question. I wear UnderArmor with great results. Between l/s & s/s, summer weight and winter weight, UA covers all the contingencies I encounter on the bike.

I believe the song is Harry Chapin's Cats in the Cradle - "...my boy was just like me, he'd grown up just like me." The father is lamenting, not taking pride in the development.
