@fjveca A bunch of shmup fans here and on Twitter have basically told me that Gradius 2 is a much better game and that I shouldn't even have bothered with this one. Take it for what it's worth, I guess :)

@Aggro Sky Apparently, the correct pronunciation is Grah-dee-us, so the "Grad" part rhymes with, well, "grad" or "rad" as opposed to "grade" or "raid."

@Bigjoe91 I much prefer run and gun as a genre, and without checking, I'm fairly sure it fared much better than shmups.

@Aggro Sky Uhm, I don't want to make you cry, but I don't even think a single other shmup made the cut, let alone Life Force specifically.

@rizzardcore I pronounce like you do, which is apparently the wrong way. And yes, Ninja Kid is awful. Totally agree. Gradius is still less fun to me.

@rizzardcore @Aggro Sky Gotta agree with Rizz here. Metroid looks worse than those other two.

Oh, and R-Type is another that didn't come close to Gradius.

@Aggro Sky There SHMUP Master wouldn't have been included even if he had list the game because since he TWEETED HIS ENTIRE LIST AT ME, I don't have his email address :P (I'm gonna need that if I ever get to a game you actually listed)

Oh, and Gradius 2 and Life Force? Didn't even come close to being on as many lists is this game did. Like I said, don't blame me, blame all the people who listed it and not the others.

4 days, 13 hours ago on Game Overkill – Gradius

Reply

@Bigjoe91 Yeah, while I may begrudgingly admit it deserves to be on the list, there's no way this game deserves to be ahead of Final Fantasy and about 100 other games that made the list, and about 200 more that didn't make it.

@ebtks I  still have to finish God of War, but I hope to start playing Doom at some point next week.

@Aggro Sky I can definitely see how, for someone who started later in the series, and started playing RPGs during later generations in general, the original Final Fantasy could feel less than polished, clunky, and a bit of a chore, especially if you loathe grinding.

Oh, and I checked your list quickly without really comparing it to the list of games that made the final cut, but a conservative estimate puts the number of games on your list that made the cut at over 30, so I'll be playing a game from your list soon enough.

@fjveca Yeah, I think it's important to remember that it was released in 1987 in Japan and 1990 in North America. It isn't perfect, but more than just being a historically important game, it still is fun.

@TempleofRetro @rizzardcore I think the FF & DW duo were the first two RPGs for lots of us, and what a way to start! I'm pretty sure my party was wiped out just as quickly as yours on my very first try. My experience prior to it was almost solely Atari 2600 games, so it was a massive leap in complexity.

I also own a lot of Final Fantasy games, but I've only beaten I, VIII, and X. Don't worry though, I have a feeling I'll be getting to play and beat quite a few more soon, if you know what I mean. I hope you'll play along ;)

@Bigjoe91 I LOVED getting the comments from the people who listed the game. In the end, I'm just playing the game, but this is YOUR list. The people who sent me their lists created Game Overkill. I felt that it was only right to give them a chance to explain WHY they listed each game.

It is also part of the reason why I want to hear from the people who didn't list the game or even send a list. I'm just one dude with one opinion. You can find lone dudes with opinions all over the internet. I want some kid who's thinking of getting into retro games to find this series and hear what a bunch of people think.

A decade from now, when Daniel has his own show on NPR, we can all look back at this and remember that for his first interview, we were there and he showed us clearly that he was already on his way to great things.

I'm doing this because sharing is fun, but I don't want to win the game, since I know I'll never play it. Anyway, my favourite N64 game is probably something different every day, but today it is Doom 64. I don't care that it's an inferior port. All I know is that the game is utterly unplayable for me unless I remap almost every single button. I then set it to the hardest difficulty (Watch Me Die!) and have the craziest amount of fun I've ever had beating an N64 game.

Seriously though, the game is just broken unless you remap most of the buttons.

@Bigjoe91 To me, every single one of those games deserves enough votes for me to review them, but if they remain where they are, and honestly, even if they were to only get one or two more votes, they just will not make the cut.

FINALLY! SOMEONE GETS IT!!!! Never agreed with the people that hate this enemy (or any element of this game for that matter.) Even the knockback. If you're good and know what you're doing, you use the knockback to your advantage. It's a tool not hindrance. Anyway, the Ninja Gaiden II Eagle is very likely the single greatest enemy (not boss) in all of 8-bit gaming.

@JoshuaCaleb75Unfortunately, Noby Noby Boy had a tonne of potential, but ultimately did virtually nothing with it. It'll entertain you for 20 minutes a couple times, and then you'll never play it again. I was so disappointed, especially considering how much I love the Katarami games. I really recommend you spend your money on something else :(

This game looks really good. Graphics reminded me more of Zelda II than the ones you mentioned (though they do resemble those too). Definitely going to try to check it out.

Oh, and "Randy" is probably Randy Rhoads, Ozzy and Quiet Riots' guitarist (died in a plane crash, I believe). Damn, I really need to share this with every heavy metal lover I know.

If you are interested, please submit your resume in one of the two options given in the job posting. Also, at least 1/2 of GMZ's founders is a Sega fanboy. I won't mention which half, but you should maybe watch what you say.

I will admit that being Canadian does not hurt your chances.

@NintendoLegend I just love how so early in the history of the super hero genre, the whole thing gets turned upside-down by this game. Instead of a insanely superior character that can basically do anything imaginable (thus making the game easy and boring), you get a game where the main character can do virtually nothing at all (amping up the fun and difficulty).
