@Bigjoe91 Actually, now that you mention it, the sound most enemies make when they die was really weird.

@Bigjoe91 I agree with all of that, except for the airship. I thought it controlled terribly and hated it. Also, I didn't think the sounds were that bad, but yeah, I've heard better, maybe even in 2600 games.

@Bigjoe91 Never played the Game Gear games, but I've heard good things. And thanks 😊

@thedancinpanda Thanks for the typo alert. I blame my editor ;) cc: @Nintendo_Legend
I definitely think the game is worth playing, especially if you like tactical RPGs.

@TempleofRetro I always loved Luke and Gort. As a short dude (I'm 5'7), I liked having these two short badasses on my team, easily killing all these bad guys. As for Gong, as soon as I stuck with him long enough to see how strong he gets, I've never beaten the game without him.
I've hinted at it before, but Shining Force II might make an appearance here at some point.
6 days, 19 hours ago on Game Overkill – Shining Force
@CronoTime Yeah, Shining Force II is more polished overall. We might see it in a future Game Overkill 😉

@ChrisSwartz It's probably in my top 40, maybe 20. Now, though my 2yo seemed to enjoy watching me play a bit, I doubt Mae would enjoy a game like this at her age. I know my 4yo wouldn't. Hopefully you continue your series til she's 10 😀
@Retro Grand Prix Honestly, it's hard to say. Beating it for my first time, I was in my early teens at the oldest, so it took me a VERY long time. Beating it this time for the review, it probably took me around 20 hours, which makes sense since howlongtobeat.com gives an average of 21/22 hours. So, for your first time, maybe 30?
My son only plays 6 games: SMB on the NES, NSMB Wii, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist (Genesis), Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, and Mario Kart DS. We loves playing NSMB Wii with me or his mom, but he pretty much only wants to play the levels where you can get Yoshi (which he has memorized), so it gets old fast. However, he does enjoy watching me play absolutely anything, even RPGs.
In terms of limiting his gaming time, that's easy. The kid is always doing something he isn't supposed to (fighting with his little brother, sliding down the stairs head first, jumping off the back of the couch, etc), so we always have the option (and use it from time to time) to take video games away for a day or whatever as a punishment.

@crazytoledo I never said Shining Force 2 wasn't also one of my all time faves, and I never said it wouldn't also be making an appearance eventually ;)

@Bigjoe91 At first, I thought you were badmouthing Shining Force. I was ready to threaten you, insult your mother, and mail you a bunch of dolls with their heads ripped off. My mistake though. You were badmouthing ActRaiser. Carry on.
3 months ago on Game Overkill – ActRaiser
@TempleofRetro Was the other game good, or at least better than this?
Oh, you might be thinking of ActRaiser 2. I've never player it, but they apparently got rid of the sim elements and just made it a platformer.
@Bigjoe91 I've been doing the same thing with my PS3. Missed lots of PSOne and PS2 games and the PSN has MUCH better prices than anything I've seenin the used market. I highly recommend P4. I think it was $5 when I got it.

@fjveca I'd say it's time to finish it. I'm glad I did.
4 months ago on Game Overkill – Doom
@rizzardcore Never thought of it as a combination of those three games, but it works!
SMB will be an interesting entry to write. It could get scary if I get 20 people emailing me their thoughts.
@fjveca I agrre with you, the gameplay has aged much better than the graphics.
As for DMC 3, you did have it on your list. Didn't make the cut, though :(
4 months, 1 week ago on Game Overkill – God of War
@Bigjoe91 Yeah, the game is important enough for video games in general, especially due to its legacy, to warrant a spot on the list, even though others may have been better according to me. As for DMC, it may see itself here eventually ;)

$3 for an hour's worth of entertainment?! I've never liked arcades, but this has altered my opinion of them slightly.

@fjveca A bunch of shmup fans here and on Twitter have basically told me that Gradius 2 is a much better game and that I shouldn't even have bothered with this one. Take it for what it's worth, I guess :)
5 months, 1 week ago on Game Overkill – Gradius
@Aggro Sky Apparently, the correct pronunciation is Grah-dee-us, so the "Grad" part rhymes with, well, "grad" or "rad" as opposed to "grade" or "raid."
@Bigjoe91 I much prefer run and gun as a genre, and without checking, I'm fairly sure it fared much better than shmups.
@Aggro Sky Uhm, I don't want to make you cry, but I don't even think a single other shmup made the cut, let alone Life Force specifically.
@rizzardcore I pronounce like you do, which is apparently the wrong way. And yes, Ninja Kid is awful. Totally agree. Gradius is still less fun to me.
@rizzardcore @Aggro Sky Gotta agree with Rizz here. Metroid looks worse than those other two.
Oh, and R-Type is another that didn't come close to Gradius.
@Aggro Sky There SHMUP Master wouldn't have been included even if he had list the game because since he TWEETED HIS ENTIRE LIST AT ME, I don't have his email address :P (I'm gonna need that if I ever get to a game you actually listed)
Oh, and Gradius 2 and Life Force? Didn't even come close to being on as many lists is this game did. Like I said, don't blame me, blame all the people who listed it and not the others.
@Bigjoe91 Yeah, while I may begrudgingly admit it deserves to be on the list, there's no way this game deserves to be ahead of Final Fantasy and about 100 other games that made the list, and about 200 more that didn't make it.
@ebtks I still have to finish God of War, but I hope to start playing Doom at some point next week.
@Aggro Sky I can definitely see how, for someone who started later in the series, and started playing RPGs during later generations in general, the original Final Fantasy could feel less than polished, clunky, and a bit of a chore, especially if you loathe grinding.
Oh, and I checked your list quickly without really comparing it to the list of games that made the final cut, but a conservative estimate puts the number of games on your list that made the cut at over 30, so I'll be playing a game from your list soon enough.
5 months, 2 weeks ago on Game Overkill – Final Fantasy
@fjveca Yeah, I think it's important to remember that it was released in 1987 in Japan and 1990 in North America. It isn't perfect, but more than just being a historically important game, it still is fun.
@TempleofRetro @rizzardcore I think the FF & DW duo were the first two RPGs for lots of us, and what a way to start! I'm pretty sure my party was wiped out just as quickly as yours on my very first try. My experience prior to it was almost solely Atari 2600 games, so it was a massive leap in complexity.
I also own a lot of Final Fantasy games, but I've only beaten I, VIII, and X. Don't worry though, I have a feeling I'll be getting to play and beat quite a few more soon, if you know what I mean. I hope you'll play along ;)
I've missed this series. Glad to see you're back :)

@Bigjoe91 I LOVED getting the comments from the people who listed the game. In the end, I'm just playing the game, but this is YOUR list. The people who sent me their lists created Game Overkill. I felt that it was only right to give them a chance to explain WHY they listed each game.
It is also part of the reason why I want to hear from the people who didn't list the game or even send a list. I'm just one dude with one opinion. You can find lone dudes with opinions all over the internet. I want some kid who's thinking of getting into retro games to find this series and hear what a bunch of people think.
A decade from now, when Daniel has his own show on NPR, we can all look back at this and remember that for his first interview, we were there and he showed us clearly that he was already on his way to great things.

@thedancinpanda I take offense to everything but the "commie" bit.
@Bigjoe91 It's that kind of attitude that got you fired last time :P

Now, based on this and your introduction, I still have no idea what to expect. I like that. I'll always be surprised :)

I'm doing this because sharing is fun, but I don't want to win the game, since I know I'll never play it. Anyway, my favourite N64 game is probably something different every day, but today it is Doom 64. I don't care that it's an inferior port. All I know is that the game is utterly unplayable for me unless I remap almost every single button. I then set it to the hardest difficulty (Watch Me Die!) and have the craziest amount of fun I've ever had beating an N64 game.
Seriously though, the game is just broken unless you remap most of the buttons.

@Bigjoe91 To me, every single one of those games deserves enough votes for me to review them, but if they remain where they are, and honestly, even if they were to only get one or two more votes, they just will not make the cut.

@ericmhunter You're tired of waiting? Think of how I must feel! I can't wait to get started, but I still have over 15 people whom have promised to send me a list before the deadline that I'm waiting on. Who knows how many others are planning to participate and haven't let me know yet. To be fair though, I did say they have until July 31st :)

FINALLY! SOMEONE GETS IT!!!! Never agreed with the people that hate
this enemy (or any element of this game for that matter.) Even the
knockback. If you're good and know what you're doing, you use the
knockback to your advantage. It's a tool not hindrance. Anyway, the
Ninja Gaiden II Eagle is very likely the single greatest enemy (not
boss) in all of 8-bit gaming.

@JoshuaCaleb75Unfortunately, Noby Noby Boy had a
tonne of potential, but ultimately did virtually nothing with it. It'll
entertain you for 20 minutes a couple times, and then you'll never play
it again. I was so disappointed, especially considering how much I love
the Katarami games. I really recommend you spend your money on something else :(
