Dan Hunt At the time the southern states left the union, slavery was still constitutional. It would have , at that time, taken an amendment to the constitution to prohibit slavery. With 15 "slave" states and 19 "free" states, that amendment was not possible. I'm pretty sure the southern states were aware that a 2/3 vote was needed. Your statement "The south lead an insurrection against the U.S. to preserve slavery" is just wrong. The south was tired of subsidizing northern industrie. Read your history.
