@_justin @Jax Raging Bile Duct I should have cited you AP style for the "all time futility record" bit. Pretty sure you're the one who bothered to look that up during a debate about ball movement and our "offensive system" one time years ago.

It's funny to me to read/hear all of these sports writers and sports radio hosts clamor all over themselves to present the idea that Ibaka should be doing this and that to step up his offensive game. I mean they want to see him drive to the bucket, or roll to the rim, or post dudes up.

It's almost as if they've never seen the man try to dribble a basketball. Drive to the bucket? What? Not if he has to dribble to beat his man there. Please. Roll to the rim instead of pop a shot? Are you serious? Not if he has to catch the ball on the move. The man successfully completed like 3 alley oop plays a season because he can't jump, catch the ball, and dunk it all in the same motion. He can only do two of those three things at once. Post moves? Any legit post move requires at least some footwork or the ability to shoot the ball without facing up.

They want to say that he's physically dominating and a supreme athlete and all that, and it's true, he's a specimen of an athlete, but he's a specimen of an athlete without fine motor skills. He has all the major motor skills in heaps, but few fine motor skill at all. You don't develop those at Ibaka's age, or even his "age".

They want him to initiate offense. Please. You can only initiate offense if you can dribble or pass, and Ibaka can't. We're talking about the man who nearly set the all time futility record for lowest assist percentage in the history of the NBA, only to be second to Dikembe. The flow of an offense isn't in his wheelhouse at all.

Serge has impeccable timing on his jumps, both for rebounds and for blocks. He has a spectacular face up game from his spots on the floor (which are really freakin' crowded right now with no offensive threats on the floor with him). He's in that tier of player right below all stars because of those skills and his athleticism and energy. But these dudes calling for him to initiate offense or create offense just don't get basketball.

@ThunderChick2010 I had to look up the location. I spent lots of time growing up in a neighboring state park in Tennessee (I was born there, most of my family is there) called Fall Creek Falls State Park.

So like, you made me miss my 2nd home with that video.

@d21 @Jax Raging Bile Duct Bonus though: I gambled that Perk wouldn't start so I didn't draft him. He's the best bizzaro player around, but you're always in danger of not meeting the minutes minimum with him and now coming off the bench it could be even worse.

@d21 @Jax Raging Bile Duct I'd have to trade for him.

And now there's no way he'd take PJIII for him.

I drafted PJIII in my bizzaro fantasy basketball league and he screwed me last night. When I want him to be good, he sucks (which is 99.9% of the time). Then when I think I can count on him being perpetually sucky, he accidentally falls into a good game.

I like the cursory nature of this article and appreciate that all of the rebuttals are legitimate and not contrived from a narrative. There are only two guesses (injury what-ifs and the existence of the no-tax 'mandate' - which everyone will have to guess at since there will be no official stance until we see if first hand) but even those guesses still rebut other guesses.

What frustrates me is there are legitimate criticisms of the Thunder regarding their decisions on players, personnel, staff and finances. But what Simmons is doing is not reiterating the legitimate criticisms, he's just whining loudly. He could be proving his point with real stuff, but instead he's parroting a narrative that he really likes. It's like the Thunder were his favorite toy, and Presti played with it, and now he wants to pretend that he hates the toy because he doesn't get to play with it anymore and let's everyone know about it by whining the loudest.

The Thunder set themselves up for this because given what they could have had in Harden (and this would have been by force, it isn't what James wanted, but he was restricted so we could have had him for that year regardless) compared to what they have now (PJIII, Lamb, Morrow). You all know I don't believe in Lamb or PJIII so I seriously doubt those guys are ever going to make us forget about the talent we lost in Harden.

The only way out of this is to see Adams become this super center we've never had before and to see the core of Westbrook, Durant, Ibaka and Adams win a ring or two. Probably coupled with some serious contracts to several players once the new TV deal / CBA is determined. I think you'll have to see both - rings and contracts - to prove that the way you went about your business was a right way to go. I don't say 'the right way to go' because I don't believe there is only one right way. But Harden sure looked like a right way, and we didn't go that way. So if the way we went doesn't end up in rings, it's easy to say we went the wrong way. The reason I think the contracts will have to come into play as well is not just to spend money, not to bring in 'the missing piece' but to finally be able to pay your home grown talent that you claim is so sustainable when it comes time. It's fine to play for a development factory when you're young, but when its time to win with those guys, you can't always let them go for some future player.

So when the time is right for the thunder to spend, they'd better spend. If not they're risking a window that they may not get back, but also admitting that they aren't financially prepared to ever compete at the right level. Sure, teams spend money in stupid ways (Lakers, Nets - as seen above) and spending money isn't the direct road to a ring, but trading talent for contracts is a sure fire way to downgrade your team, and that just can't happen during a window.

Things I'm hoping for this season (it's a long list, so prepare yourself):

  1. PJIIIIIII and Lamb play enough minutes that everyone on this board reverses course and wants both of them off the team ASAP. Like, I'm pulling for Derek Fisher level dislike, verging into Caron Butler disdain territory. From the entire, freakin', board.

Curmudgeon you say? I plead the 5th.

@White_kiwi_thunder I'm pretty sure the most important thing is what other people say about him. I mean some people say wins or championships, but that just means people will say good things about you, so really what he does on the court is just a roadbump on the way to what's really important.

One thing I'm happy about Roberson starting is that he'll be playing with Perk, and he might be the only guy on the team who could overcome Perk's awfulness at rebounding all on his own.

@_justin I'm going to ignore the metrics this time. I think he's bad at defense, and I like hating his defense, so I'm sticking to it. In order for me to reconsider, Reggie's going to have to surprise me by shutting someone down for a game. Then I'll start using the data to prove he's good. But in the meantime, he sucks and those metrics are too noisy. So there.

@ThunderChick2010 We did that date thing twice; once when he was 6 months old and once when he was 9 months old. Both times we just sat there like crack addicts checking our watches every 3 minutes to see if was time to go. Hand-wringing, leg shaking, nervous and terse conversation, on the edges of our seats trying to endure the date so we could leave and go get him.

We've had moments to ourselves, but they haven't been easy. First time parents and all - being away without him turns us into nervous wrecks. Maybe it's control issues, maybe it's knowing how hard it's going to be to recover from the routine change and well aware that it isn't worth it, with the thought in our minds that we're doing this because other folks say it's a good idea but neither of us wanting to participate in it for any other reason. We're already tired and dealing with his re-adjustment to normal is more work than it's worth to change his routine.

Other people must just do it right. We haven't figured it out yet.
