"Important note for this season: I'm giving up my four-year vow to avoid typing the word "Thunder" in an NBA column after the Sonics were hijacked from Seattle with the implicit consent of the NBA's commissioner, David Stern. It's just too much of a pain in the ass to keep the "Zombies" thing going, and more important, Chris Hansen is definitely bringing the Sonics back to Seattle. That's happening. Let's start looking forward instead of backward."

KD / DC / Lazar

Serge / Nick / PJ3

Perk / Cole / Thabeet

here's what we got (positions are somewhat interchangeable):

Russ / Maynor / Reggie

Thabo / Harden / DC

KD / PJ3  / Lazar

Serge / Nick / _______

Perk / Aldrich / Thabeet

We don't have a need or a spot for Grant (Old Man) Hill.

But putting Latavious in as that 3rd PF (or maybe that Russian guy?) might be a good fit.

@propsizzle  @Skyline I'm kind of torn on that.  Part of me is super happy to see him get "cut" but part of me realizes he's getting older and slower and our guys are getting stronger and better. Not worried about him anymore.

2 years ago on Hasheem Thabeet is signing with the Thunder

Reply

@Skyline And as far as standing pat with our roster, what's not to like?  We're pretty darn good and these young guys keep working hard and getting better.

Plus, we're adding Maynor back (and who knows, we might get something out of PJ3), so we will have a better squad.  Relax, Skyline, it'll be okay.

2 years ago on Hasheem Thabeet is signing with the Thunder

Reply

@Skyline c'mon, don't be worried about Grant Hill and Steve Nash joining the Lakers.  We're still better than them and will be continuing to improve - these guys are getting older and slower by the day.

A couple of years ago Grant Hill was a pretty good defender on Durant, but KD has continued to work and can more easily handle him.

2 years ago on Hasheem Thabeet is signing with the Thunder

Reply

@CDSpark Yeah, I don't really get that.  Nash will help a little, but no way does he put them over the top of us.  That's crazy talk.  Just 'cuz it's LA it's gonna be magical.

@ThunderBelize Great question.  I think that happens a lot.  When teams like those players, they know they're gonna have to pay them anyway, so why not make the RFA offer?  If they get the player, great. If they don't, it screws their competitor.

I'd LOVE to hear about that strategy from a former GM sometime.

I think he means that if he cares more about being part of the team than getting all the money he can, he'll take less.  Harden said as much in his exit interview - something to the effect of money can't buy how enjoyable it is to be part of the Thunder right now.

2 years ago on Death and Luxury Taxes: The Thunder’s complicated future

Reply

@ou_sas Agree.  We don't make the defensive growth without Perkins.  It seems that NBA D is not just about who's playing the 5, but experience knowing how to make rotations and play at a championship level.

So we overpaid him a little, perhaps, but who cares?  We can amnesty him whenever we need to (or trade him, more likely) to get his money off the table. Perkins' contract will NOT be the reason we can't keep Harden and Ibaka.

2 years ago on Death and Luxury Taxes: The Thunder’s complicated future

KD / DC (?) / Lazar

could flip Reggie and Ivey I guess

Will Thabeet be the 3rd Center?

will we play PJ3 as more of a 4 or 3?

@Koka_Da_Bauce Yeah, but look at this list (from Forbes.com):

The NBA’s Highest-Paid Coaches For 2011-12

Doc Rivers (Celtics): $7 million

Mike D’Antoni (Knicks-resigned): $6 million Gregg Popovich (Spurs): $6 million

Nate McMillan (Trail Blazers): $5.5 million

Rick Adelman (Timberwolves): $5 million

Flip Saunders (Wizards-fired): $4.8 million

Rick Carlisle (Mavericks): $4.5 million

Mike Brown (Lakers): $4.5 million

Stan Van Gundy (Magic): $4.5 million

Scott Skiles (Bucks): $4.5 million

not to say that all these salaries are justified, but if I'm Brooks and I see this salary, I think I should be paid at least $4.5M - right?  He's done more than Skiles, SVG, Saunders, McMillan & D'Antoni and as much as Brown (and Adelman - not sure).

Not that it's right, but that looks like market value.

I sure as heck hope this guy turns out waaaaay better than that experiment.

2 years ago on Friday Bolts - 6.29.12

Reply

@Legendary_dork ...and who would he take minutes from, anyway?  I guess that depends on where he's slotted. If it's at the 4, he won't see the floor.

If it's at the 3, he could be a fantastic sub for KD for 8-10 minutes a game.  Wow, I'm kind of stoked at just the thought of that...

Lineup of Maynor, Harden, PJ3, Collison & Aldredge?  Sounds ... interesting!

2 years ago on Friday Bolts - 6.29.12

Reply

@Legendary_dork Oh, yeah, I sure HOPE so.  I just remember when Collison was drafted, they did shoulder surgery on him his rookie year so they could get it out of the way.  To the best of my knowledge, it's not been a problem since. I'm just thinking they'll take a similar, bring him along slowly approach with him, too.

2 years ago on Friday Bolts - 6.29.12

Reply

So stoked about PJ3. Man, what a steal.

I'm expecting him to spend most of his time in Tulsa, getting stronger, healing up the knee, learning the system, etc.

...so I'll put the over/under on games he plays for the Thunder this year at 15.  Do you guess more or less?

2 years ago on Friday Bolts - 6.29.12

Reply

Wow, love the pick!  I didn't read anything about him b/c I didn't think he'd fall down to us...he fell 8-11 spots, depending on the mock.  Sweet!

No worries on the knee issue - we can have him get surgery and recoup this next year since we won't need him anyway - let him continue to develop and get stronger.
