@Bigfoot_for_1C @Eye of the Tiger  Don't be too sure. They need cap room, have a great need for an offensive defenseman as they have lots of bangers but no movers other than Streit (even the minors is bare of puck movers). Franson gives the one this year, and Percy either late in year or next.  They are the opposite of us, they have young forwards but limited young defense. We have young defense but limited centres.  This is a real hockey trade. You need to give up to get.  Our advantage is we can send them cap for this year ( Orr and $1milllion) and Laughton-Holland fill your 3-4 centre with a low budget vet as back up.

Flyers are looking to dump salary so let me suggest the following.

Franson, Percy and Orr to Philadelphia for Brayden Coburn and Scott Laughton

Flyers dump Coburn's salary ($4.5 x 2) in exchange for Franson (3.0) and Orr (925K)  and they can dump Orr into the minors and save the cap.... total savings 1.5 million, Leafs dump excess weight (Orr) and move a right hand offensive defenseman for another strong stay at home body (either the 1b to help Phaneuf or play 2b and allow Robidas to side Phaneuf)

The price for the cap relief is an exchange of top level prospects.  Flyers get a young puck moving defenseman with potential to develop into top 4 defense, Leafs get a young centre with potential to develop into solid 2-3 centre

In order to make this work, I would even consider adding a low level prospect, a late pick or cash (1 million) to entice the Flyers to bite.

I hate giving up Percy but Laughton could be something special and now is the time to strike while Philly is cap challenged.

What about considering Brendan Morrow at $1m-1.5m for one year. It would let him rebuild his game into a 3rd line shut down winger and set him for a better deal next year when he is 35 and his bonuses can be deducted from the cap. This would give the prospects, including Colborne another year in the A. Colborne could be slotted as first line C at the Marlies and get big minutes.

@Savo43 @NotInsane I think it would also make some sense to consider that Franson was lacking confidence at the beginning of his term with the Leafs. Wilson sat him often and one wonders if the lack of physicality was a result of hesitation of being caught out of position. As he played more, and the fear of being sat disappeared, he was willing to be more aggressive knowing a miss would not put him in the press box. Confidence is the key. Now that he is entrenched, I believe you are going to see an aggressive and effective Franson next year.  He will push hard for the top PP and do not be suprised if he and Dion are consider 1a and 1b on D.

@Pent_House I worry about the perception that we just dump Liles to take the money for others. I would rather look at a straight up hockey trade with a team needing some offense from the back  end and offering a solid experienced 2d banger who can support Phaneuf. Basically a $4 m swap of offensive talent for defensive talent.  This will allow to keep Franson, Gunnerson, Gardiner, Fraser as the bottom four and allow space to move in Blackler, Reilly, etc as they develop. I also predict that you are going to be pleasantly surprised when the RFA's  sign. After yesterday, you can see that the money has run out for teams and the RFA's will pay the price in less money. Remember how the habs dealt with Subban.  I see Kari at $3m or less over 2 years,  Gunnerson at 2.5 and Franson at 2.75 also over 2 years. Their payday will come but next round not this as they need to add a few more seasons to the resume ( exception may be Gunnerson )  Of course, if they want a longer term, I would consider a higer AAV but only if it did not limit our flexiblity to bring in new blood.

Very few teams in the league have TWO elite shutdown lines. Most would be happy to have one.  The Leafs have two first lines 1a and 1b that can be used interchangeably depending on who is hot on a given night.  That is going to create problems over the long season.  Concentrate on Kessel Bozak JVR and watch Clarkson Kadri Lupul tear you a new one,... and vice versa.  Having a top six that many would argue are equal to any top six in the league and a third line that checks, scores and drives you crazy is a good option to have.

According to NHL.com, Chicago's top three point scoring centres were Toews (48) Bolland (14) and Kruger (13) and they won the Stanley Cup. Boston was a finalist with top three being Kregi (33) Seguin and Bergeron (32). Toronto's top three were Kadri (44) Bozak (28) and McClyment (17) ( Grabovski was fourth with 16). Bruins have lost Seguin, Hawks Bolland and Leafs Grabovski, and the only ones whining constantly are the Leaf nation. We need a collective head shake.

People also seem to forget that Lupul was a no show for most of the season. Adding a full season Lupul ( hopefully), Clarkson and Bolland  means at least the same goals, if not more and less against.  Adding a full season of Gardiner does the same for the defense and Bernier boosts the goaltending.  This team is far better than the one we ended the season.

1 year ago on <!--:en-->Are the Leafs any better after two weeks of mayhem?<!--:-->

All this constant Bozak bashing is similar to the usual pick a target attacks that are the staple of Leaf Nation. Every year we seem to see one player centred out for the treatment. Bozak is not the best centre to have but nor is he the worst. His point progession has improved from 32 pts in 82 games (2011) to 47 in 73 (2012) to a pro-rated 50 pts in 2012 (28 in 46).  Grabovski scored similar in his best season and his buy-out is treated like a disaster.  IF we can get a consistent 50 plus points from Bozak I will be satisfied with that contract.  Kadri will grow into that 1C and all this will blow over

@Greg Fenton @-Keon- We already have a 25 year old, six foot five defenseman who has played 243 games in the NHL scoring 23g 77a for 100 pts (4g, 25a, 29 pts in 48 last season) His name is Franson. Pieterangelo was 5g,19a, 24 pts last season.  Why give up anything when our answer may be already in the lineup? If Franson continues his steady progression of the last two years, we may already have our number 1 D.

@Pent_House @Eye of the Tiger 2 would be great, but I agree he might want 3 as it could be his last contract.

@PeterZeroOne @Eye of the Tiger @TOHockeyNut Replaceable parts on short term. can be replaced by younger guys as they emerge and moved on. No crazy salaries for Morrow, Scuderi etc.

@Pent_House @Eye of the Tiger 82 games in 2010, 78 in 2011, 57 in 2012 and 44 in 2013 .. neck injury in 2012 and a groin strain that put him for last four games of reg season and limited him in playoffs. Even with a groin strain, he kept going out there in playoffs. Heart and souler. Remember he is be brought in for 3rd line.  25g 25 assists, not bad for a third liner.

Everyone is calculating 23 players. That is the max that you can sign for cap purposes but it is not mandatory. With the Marlies close by, 22 or even 21 could be used and the money saved on the cap. why keep players like Colborne in the press box when he could be playing and still be available if needed.

Add Clarkson $25m over 5 years,  Ribiero $20 over 4 years, Scuderi $13.5 over 3 years,  Morrow $12m over 3 years

Sign Kadri $11.5 over 3 years, Gunnerson $9 over 3 years, Franson $12 over 4 years, Fraser $1 over 1yr.,Colborne $1.2 over 1 year,  McLaren $800k over 1 year

(Put Liles on the block but keep him until right deal shows up)

cap $61 m

@daniel marois This is the most accurate statement so far. Nonis would never buy out Grabo without a confirmed replacement. My personal bet is either Mike Ribiero for less money than Grabo or a surprise trade. Putting my money on the former. Whether you like it or not, Ribiero is a step up in offensive production from Grabo.

@Cameron19 @Eye of the Tiger @theacs1966 @Black_Hawk

Your analysis is fair but with the cap coming down, it is hard to justify a large jump like three times last years salary. I think Franson has more upside as a scoring defenseman, so 2.5-3.0-3.5 over three years would be the best option. Gunnerson, I would do at max of 2.25-2.75-3.25 over the same three year term. Going any higher will push the price up for Kadri this year and Gardiner next year.

@Cameron19 @theacs1966 @Black_Hawk I think you are a little high on Franson and Gunnerson.. both should be around 2m on a single year or 7m-7.5m over three years. They are RFA not UFA.
