On the surface, it looked like Dion Waiters had an absolutely atrocious game last night. He was missing wide open shots, handling the ball too much and not passing enough. He got hammered in the comments section on Daily Thunder and I thought, rightfully so.

But then I went back and watched ALL 32 MINUTES that he played. I watched only Dion.

Believe it or not, he did not allow his man to score a single field goal. Not one. He fouled Lance Stephenson once in the 2nd quarter, which lead to free throws, but that was it. Zero made FGs allowed by Dion.

If the game is on your DVR, go back and watch it. Waiters' defense was stellar. He was always in the right place, he always stayed in front of his man and he contested shots.

Watching it the first time, of course I wanted more Morrow. We all did. The problem is, Morrow is probably the worst defender on the team. Go re-watch any Thunder game and just watch Morrow play defense. He gets consistently torched. Blown by. Left in the dust. Dude doesn't move his feet well at all on defense. Waiters can at least stay in front of his man.

Now, believe me, I'm not used to giving Scott Brooks any credit. But, after re-watching the game, I can see why he played Waiters 32 minutes. Roberson can't shoot, Morrow can't stop anybody and I noticed Singler is also pretty slow-footed on defense. Therefore, without KD, Waiters is simply our best combination of offense and defense at SG/SF.

When KD comes back however, I think our closing lineup should be Augustin, Westbrook, Durant, Ibaka and Kanter.

@Lost Ones @Grolgar I actually AM against resigning Nick. He's not good anymore and it's highly likely Brooks will continue to play him instead of McGary, thus stunting Mitch's growth.

@Royce Young @Daniel Hawaii Thank you, I appreciate that. I don't comment much around here these days since this site has exploded over the years and now has many, many great posters. Also, I watch games 5-6 hours later because of the time difference, so my comments are usually late to the party. But I do make it a point to come here several times a day because this is the still by far the best site to get Thunder news and analysis and of course it's always fun reading the comments from other diehard Thunder fans.

I don't even care about the money.  The fact is, Nick isn't good anymore! Everything he USED to be good at, he's not anymore. Now we have to sit here and watch him play valuable minutes for the next 2 and half years when those minutes should go to McGary or someone else who actually IS effective OR has upside.

@Royce Young Ridiculous!!  Durant is not going to care that Nick Collison has one more year on his contract when he makes his big decision next year. @Tonitrus @Daniel Hawaii A third string PF should cost the veteran's minimum. For a team that's struggling to stay under the luxury tax, spending $4 million a year for a 3rd string PF is ridiculous.

This team preaches building through the draft and internal development. How can McGary develop if he's chained to the bench for the next two years? I really just don't understand this at all.

2 months, 1 week ago on Five thoughts on Nick Collison’s extension

Reply

@Tonitrus @Daniel Hawaii Fine, you want a 3rd string PF in case Mitch gets hurt, bring in another vet who won't cost $8 million to play 16 minutes and give us 3 points and 3 rebounds.

2 months, 1 week ago on Thunder sign Nick Collison to a multi-year extension

Reply

Why even draft Mitch McGary if you're going to extend Collison? They play the exact same position. Unless Perk is gone and Mitch is going to play center while Nick plays PF. If that happens, the interior defense would be embarrassing. Neither of those guys are athletic enough to defend the rim.

More than likely, one of them will have to sit on the bench for the next two years, getting paid to do nothing. If it's Mitch, we're stunting his development. If it's Nick, we are paying $8 million for nothing.

THIS MOVE MAKES NO SENSE!

2 months, 1 week ago on Thunder sign Nick Collison to a multi-year extension

NO!!!! Nick has regressed tremendously over the past couple of years. He contributes next to nothing. 2 more years and close to $8 million is LUDICROUS!!!  He doesn't take charges any more. He's lost confidence in his jump shot. He was only really good when he played 2-man game with James Harden. I was counting down the days until Nick was off the books. Meanwhile I'm sure Mitch McGary can easily replicate the 4 points and 4 rebounds Nick currently offers us. Bad job, Presti.

Great series! Didn't think we'd win after horrible Game 5, but The Oklahoman headline finally lit a fire under KD's ass, Russ starting shooting less and passing more and the rest is history.

Scott Brooks saved his job by making some crucial adjustments. I didn't think he was capable of it, but I guess even he knew if he didn't try something, his job was in jeopardy.

Caron Butler starting is huge for our title chase. Our starting lineup has been flawed for years now. Perk + Thabo is like playing 3 vs 5 on offense. Memphis wouldn't even guard them so they could load up on KD and Russ. Add someone who can make shots to the starting lineup and, shocker, everything opens up. Unlike Thabo, Butler is a threat the D must respect. He was great on D too, face-guarding Mike Miller most of the night and holding him to 3 points. He played 41 mins. I think Brooks has a new crush.

I can't believe we wasted all this time with Thabo as the starting SG in conjunction with Perk as the starting center. And then when Thabo went down, Andre Roberson was the starter. Makes no sense to not have a spot up shooter start alongside KD and Russ. For some reason, Brooks always insisted on starting the 1st and 3rd quarters playing 3 vs. 5 on offense.

Thabo can still have value though. I think he should come off the bench against the Clippers and have one job: defend Jamal Crawford.

Playing Steven Adams over Nick in Games 6 and 7 was another great move. Adams provides defense, toughness, shot-blocking and he irritates opponents. He needs to play more.

D-Fish needs to play less.

All in all, Brooks' willingness to make lineup adjustments in Games 6 and 7 is the single greatest thing that came out of this Memphis series for me, and if he continues to be flexible, it bodes well for the rest of our playoff run.

Happy 5th birthday Daily Thunder! I've been visiting every day for nearly those 5 years and Royce, you've really done a wonderful job adding fresh new content every day on this site. There's no other place I go to get my Thunder news. It's also fun reading all the comments from this great Daily Thunder community.

Let's hope Russ comes back strong, because earlier this season, when we were fully healthy, I truly felt like we were going to win the title this year. I can't say I've ever definitively felt that in the past 5 years. With a healthy Russ, this could be our year. Thunder Up!
