Manu absolutely diserves the extra money on his current contract. Houston was offering more. He has sacraficed in the past for his team and this is simply makes up for him not demanding max contracts in the past. It will be a glorious day when his jersey is retired and hangs proudly above our fans.

With respect to Rubios game. He's not even in the same stadium as parker until He has at least one ring.
Perkins is making a statement based on potential. If we were to make predictions on potential then there's a lot of rediculous things we can say but the bottom line is that actions speak louder than words. Very few point guards in NBA history will accomplish what parker has accomplished. Steve Nash in all his glory has no rings. Everyone likes to say Chris Paul is better than TP yet Tony is yet to loose a playoff series against him. I love CP3 but again... Tony has gotten it done and continues to get it done every season. There's a reason why for some time last season he was considered number 2 in the MVP race. Most non-spurs fans have no idea what this guy is capable of.

Would love to see Pietrus since he def fills a need behind Leonard. Has the potential to be a D an 3 guy off the bench for 10-15 mins a night. <-- this is the need.
Love that the spurs want to bring in a vet pg. A guy like Bibby can teach these guys so much/keep them in line (Mills, De Colo, Joseph). Tony is already busy enough with the starting role. This will make Bibby happy because he will be part of a winning team/Spurs are happy because they have an injection of vetran pg BB IQ to act as an assistant coach like Jaque Vaugn. Look at Jaque now.

He certainly has the potential on offense. Neal can stop and pop, pick and pop, spot up, hit floaters, and running bank shots.... He's got a lot of options for sure. Expect his shooting percentages to go down though.. Prob somewhere around 38% shooting percentage and lower from 3 pt range. I hope he surprises me and does better because he really seems to be a high character guy. Where it hurts the most is on defense but the bucks have some outstanding rim protectors so if his presence can be neutralized. Overall Neal is a big step up from Roger Mason, hopefully Belinelli is a step up from Neal.

One thing to add to this article... Greivis Vasquez, turns out to be the most improved player of the year in my eyes after the trade. In return they did get a valuable piece in Quency Poindexter but... I guess they didn't realize his true value until these playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts next year. Prince is done unless they absolutely have to use him. Daye needs to develop because he's in line for 2nd string minutes. At least Memphis learned some things from this series. Glad to have another strong developing team in the west with good leadership.

Good article, I feel like our best lineup is one that brings Tony off the bench when Jack comes off the bench. TP still has trouble guarding Jack but will do much better against him. That puts Manu at point, Green and Leonard at the 2 and 3 position and then Splitter and Duncan down low... I guess you can interchange Diaw with Splitter but I think the size will help us in case they drive.
With this lineup we really have a lot of defensive strength because Manu, Green and Loendard can switch all day on Thompson and Curry.
Either way it really looks like the spurs have the pieces of a stronger team. I'm very curious to see what Pop does.

I think Cory can only get better. He's doing exactly what he's been doing over the last 3 years with the canadian national team, the D league, and the summer league. He also has the potential to get better as his confidence grows and that is exactly what we need coupled with his superior laterial quickness, higher rebounding ability for his size, and very good ball handling. His mother and father played ball professional and his brothers play as well.

Honestly, I think this blog is supposed to be here to support our spurs not put them down. It's sad how shallow the people's faith in the spurs are.. Based on the comments below. If you look at the stats for this game, with tony Parker playing well we would have blown thisgame out. Against the best 1-2 punch front line Tim and tiago payed very well both getting double doubles while playing significantly under 40 minutes. Dwight and Pau had to fight for every point and both played almost 40. We still held them to 91 points at 36%. That's good D and is something we need to see more than anything going into the playoffs.. To me, tony was holding back because this month has been more about Tim getting used to being the man and Pop getting a look at who will play in the playoffs and who won't. The team has worked hard for this comfort and I don't think they're bothered. I have faith and expect a very strong healthy team more than ready come day one of the playoffs. Those who don't have faith, maybe you should watch the lakers.

Why not rest them against Orlando? A coach looses a game against Orlando because they rest their reserves they then run the risk of loosing 3 games in a row... Orlando, Miami, and the Grizzlies.
Point 1 - This is very simple. Coaches coach. That's what they get paid for and they do what's best for their team in order to win a championship. Coming out from this they won two out of three games in four days. That's a win considering they were playing two of the top teams in the NBA during that stretch.
Point 2 - Respect for international players. four out of five starters started for their respective home countries during the olympics. Stern was very disrespectful towards the international game by issuing this fine and show his blatant disrespect for these international players, their skill levels, and their countries. That was a mistake and will not go unnoticed
Point 3 - Pop Doesn't have to show the Miami Heat all of his cards... this is chess not checkers! 1-15 diserve the option to play whenever the caoch wants to play them.. This makes hell for scouting a team when another team prepares for the starters and doesn't even look at 3rd string.
Point 4 - Player retention... Why would Spitter resign with the spurs next year when another team is offering more money? Why will Mills, Neal, De Colo, Blair... Why does Tim Tony and Manu sign contracts below the max? It's because of decisions like this by Pop... Guys like to play 1-15 and this 2nd and 3rd sring team is under paid based on NBA standards.. the least they deserve is the spotlight every once in a while.. why not a nationally telivised game?
evaluate 2nd and 3rd sting players against the champions- may better determine playoff roster
Element of surprise.. Thats what Miami got and coaches deserve that option. Also gave our reserves a better chance to show their skills.

I knew this was against the rules.. the refs were so mind boggled when they saw the move they couldn't make the call.. This really was the only time I've ever seen a player do something like this.

2 years, 3 months ago on Video: Ginobili walks the line
This is a great play.. I've never seen a player with posession of the ball bounce pass it to himself and run out only to run right back in to catch his own pass.. Most basketball players can't even think of this play let alone do it under pressure on the court in a close game. This happened so fast during the game I didn't even see it.
2 years, 4 months ago on Video: Ginobili's ridiculous 'and 1'
Outstanding court vision and awareness. It really takes special guys to make plays like this, Manu, Rubio, CP3. The scary part is that he's still not 100% adapted to the environment so he will without a doubt get better.
Given it's only preseason it's still prob safe to say this guy will be a good player.
2 years, 5 months ago on Video: De Colo with the fancy pass
@CraigThomas @Spursfan66 Example, Omer Asik - 3 year deal averaging 8 million a year. It's only 5 up front but still 14 on the tail end. His signing seems to be based on potential alone.
Tiago splitters per 40 min stats put him as a much better offensive player than Omer and still an above avg rebounder.
If you've paid any attention to what the markets give these big guys you would understand.. we may loose him unless we're willing to match a rediculous contract.
2 years, 6 months ago on Spurs may have reason to keep team intact
@Spursfan66 No way Jax gets traded. He doesn't want to be traded and he's openly stated he can finish his career here. He's also accepted less of a roll for us.. Seems like hes serous.
Utah has big reason to get rid of Al. They have Milsap, Favors and Kanter. If (which they will) Kanter and Favors come along like they should Utah has to get rid of someone and I think it will be Jefferson. (Teams can't afford to keep that deep of a front court long term) .But, who knows.. if they decide to part ways with Milsap maybe we have a shot at him (doubt it) but.. I do remember reading an article about how Jefferson modeled his game after Timmy and think big Al likes the idea of coming to a major contender. His respect for the spurs last year during the playoffs was great.
Next point - Dennis Lindsey is now Utahs GM. GMs always keep the tallent they know. Danny Ferry brought over Danny Green. He also resigned Anthony Tolliver now for the hawks. Lindsey understands the Spurs Culture, he understands and highly values the spurs tallent (He was part of drafting and recruiting them so of course) <- This is even more the reason for this to happen. Just so happens spurs are loaded with very talented guards.
Wither it's through trade, sign and trade, or whatever.. Since this is something that could happen.. I think it may turn out to be a good move for both sides.
The money certainly can be there and you know it's possible. I like SJAX but if he's in a position where he has to accept a minimum contract because we're bringing someone in.. he may just say.. ok.. Mainly because of the much higher potential for a ring. Big players are accepting less money all the time in the NBA.. It just takes respect and a choice of a ring over the extra bucks. That's not up to you or I to decide.
@Spursfan66 http://hoopshype.com/salaries/san_antonio.htm Your right, I was counting the qualifying offers for GN and Splitter from Hoops hype. Besides that I was not counting DJB because he can't defend other bigs and he hasn't developed the kind of touch required for a forward of his height. Also, I'm not counting GN because other teams will offer him more money and we will not match. We already have guys on contract that can fill his shoes. Joseph, Nando and hopefully we resign Patty because he's a stud .Splitter.. the hope his we resign him but we may loose him because bigs get a premium even if they're not outstanding.
Besides that- we certainly have the cap space to sign Al Jefferson if he's willing to accept 10-11.. yes we may be just under or maybe even just into luxery tax but that will change when Tim retires. We can make up for Als lower pay upfront by adding some onto the back end.. My main point is... we owe a move like this to Tim. Al is only 27 years old and as been an outstanding player on mediocre teams for a long time. Surround him with our guys and his level of play goes up. He's the kind of player that turns it on when he wants to.
Under this scenario we keep most of our team in tact, keep our Vetrans young guys and only loose DJB, GN. If we can resign Manu and SJax for 7 mill a piece then we can spend 10 - 11 on Al and be slightly into the Luxery tax depending on Tiago.
Even though.. chances of this happening are slim.. it can happen if Al wants to play next to TIm and is willing to accept more money on the back end of his contract.
Rather than hampering creativity why not encourage anyway.. it's no fun hearing guys talk about what's impossible. I'd rather hear what is possible.
@SivanJohn They don't need a major overhaul but.. they do need an inside guy that can take over like Tim used to. Adding that one guy next year will complete our team for at least another 5 years. There's a reason why the spurs are holding out.
@Spursfan66 37 Mil on the books next year because Manu and SJax contracts are up. Timmy led the way in taking a pay cut and now Jackson and Manu will as well. Manu and Jackson sign for 7 million a piece. Tiago for 7 and BIG AL will accept less... Why? because he wants to win. Jefferson is very much like the spurs and also similar to Tim Duncan. He's a low profile player, in his prime 27 years old. Still managed to pull 9.6 rebounds a game while sharing minutes with Favors, Milsap, and Kanter. For the spurs he pulls 11 + a game. Tiago and temporary Tim will make up for his defensive, even though he's above average already. He's a sleeper and plays when he needs to step up just like Tim.
Perfect Example out of all the outstanding games Al had last year against MIN his previous team..this one game says it all for me. 12 reb 3 ast 18 pts 6 of 14 shooting with 6 of 6 FTM-A. Kevin Love - similar minutes 8 rbs 15 points 5 of 21 shooting. Rubio had 11 ast but Utah destroyed them. Jefferson has a long productive career ahead of him. His touch is like David West but he's taller and can defend the best. Hes always willing to take a back seat if needed but will step up any time he's called upon.
Sign BIG AL JEFFERSON next year, resign Splitter and then destroy all other NBA Teams.
I agree completely, Nash is absolutely what they need on offense and will be the most important part of this trade. Hopefully his age starts to show like J Kids did last year. On the same note their greatest weakness of LA is the lack of speed at pg. They will have a very hard time guarding Tony, Patty and even De Colo so hopefully we can pick them apart.

Tim Legler You're full of *&%# for defending OKC on this. These two calls most certainly determined the game and this series would be going into a game 7 had they not been called. The only reason why you're making a case for OKC is because you're with the NBA and you're defending the NBAs reputation.

First off, The Grizzlies looked very impressive last night so we still can't count them out.
Regarding your statement below.
Chris Paul was someone who won the individual battle with Parker in 2008 when the Spurs and Hornets played an epic seven game Western Conference Semi-finals series.
I think blatantly saying Chris Paul won the individual battle is giving CP3 credit he doesn't deserve. You can just as easily say Tony won the battle.
I took a look at the stats (listed below) from that series and nearly all categories are a draw with CP3 ahead by 2 points 4 assists but Tony had 1 less turn over and played 3 less minutes. Add three more minutes to Tonys game and their stats are about equal. Both players also shot around 50%. Plus not to mention the spurs WON!! This should give Tony some bonus points for winning and based on NBA standards this means Tony was the dominant point guard. Regardless of how you look at it, CP3 doesn't deserve the title of the better point guard in the match up based on the 2007-08 series.
CP3 averaged 36.5 minutes, 22 points, 53% fgp, 9.8 ast, 2.5 rbs, 1.75 steals and 2.3 TO
On the other hand
TP8 averaged 33 minutes, 19.5 points, 51% fgp, 5.5 ast, 2.8 rbs, .75 steals, and 1.5 TO, Plus his team won.

This looked like a practice game for our bench. Pop has enough confidence in the second unit to put them against the Mavs so chances are he has enough confidence to know we have their number when it comes to a serous matchup. This is a classic Pop move. We will continue loosing one here and there until after the allstar game. Then, Manu will come back and the spurs will slowly start to tighten the vice on defense. This team is much better then their record indicates and it's nothing new. Pop always does this. Keeps the players hungry.

This is a great trade for NO. They got a lot of value out of what would have been a crippling loss in free agency next year. Very good trade for both teams. Now I don't think the clips have an excuse for not being a great team.
Idea for a future article- How do the spurs stand up against the Clips team now with the CP addition? How do we stand up against the Hornets? Where are our strengths and where are our weaknesses? Seems like we're pretty good all around but maybe we could see a position by position analysis?
I just can't get it out of my mind that the clips are cursed so I guess we'll see this year. With their starting line up they seem poised for success.

@JohnAbney David west is the man and he would be an outstanding sign.. I don't think we can afford him so that doesn't matter much. Although I would potentially take him in a Bonner Blair sign and trade. So now that West is out of the conversation because we just don't have enough for him.
Dunleavy is a great player.. Brent Berry, Mike FInley type with more height and better rebounding skills who would be more than willing to take a spot ahead or behind Manu. He is and was a starter for years with a great ball handle, BBIQ, and shooting skills. If he's over his injurys then he will be a huge asset. This guy is more along the lines of the type of players the spurs sign.
Still, Butler will add different dynamic that neither Howerd or Dunleavy can fill. Butler can post up and this would situationaly give us the ability to exploit mismatches at the 3 guard position, while when we have a need for a fast defensive minded 3 guard we can go with Leonard.
I see pop trying to keep the pressure off Leonard on the offensive end while he will request a lot from him on the defensive end. Hopefully Anderson can step up this year on offense as well.

I'd take the younger Howard or Butler over RJ any day.. If Peter Holt is willing to pay to get rid of RJ any fan would be crazy to complain. Replacing him with Howard or Butler are both good options for less money. Those guys will have a lot of pressure to perform as well because of Leonard putting the pressure on. Butler will be a much better defender on large Small Forwards like Lebron while Howard will be better for less bulky quicker guys.
This is a great move from any fans perspective because you get to see a big name come in and some of our cap space open up.
