if the movie people did a Top Gun remake today, they would probably put Chaning Tatum or Bradley Cooper, not Brad Pitt.

then there is Mitsuken in Kalihi, which is moving the area close to First Hawaiian Bank across the old Kalihi Bowl area (now it's a Nissan car dealership). I remember buying magazines from the pharmacy store. Playing bowling there for my high school team... Fun times (back in 1988-1992). (Before there was Kam Bowl, now a Walgreen's on School Street.) Then, there is Mitusba across the street by Freight Merchant. There is always a line at Mitsuken for lunch. Bob's Big Boy is still not renovated; I do miss eating breakfast there. I miss Gibson's Shopping Center close by (Servco Mapunapuna); there was a Jumbo's and Jack in the Box there. 99 Ranch Market - I miss that one also; now, it's a food court. It was for those people who lived in Pearl City but didn't want to drive all the way to Chinatown to buy their cheap fresh vegetables, fruits and Asian imported items (see Pacific Supermarket in Waipahu; Palama Market in Kalihi and by Don Quijote; Keeaumoku Supermarket (Korean store) ). It's hard to call it Don Quijote or Don Ki, I will still remember calling that 24 shopping complex Daiei or Holiday Mart - i'm old school like that. Since the Macy's in Downtown is gonna shut down, the retail company shoud replace it with Liberty House (it's former name) or J.C. Penney (another store that Hawaii lost).

i almost forgot about one more place, Wailana Coffee House in Waikiki -- I just went there two days ago. It's quite nice. Kinda like how Kenny's Restaurant or Ken's House of Pancakes (in Hilo). Locals and tourists alike flock to this place. Tried home made corned beef hash, scrambled eggs and all you can eat pancakes "breakfast special." comfort food. it felt good !!!

interesting.. it's quite sad.. it's like a historic landmark (think Rainbow Drive Inn, Columbia Inn, KC Drive Inn, Likelike Drive Inn, Meg's Drive Inn, the Willows restaurant, Diner's, Leonard's Bakery, Liliha Bakery, Fritz's European Bakery in Kalihi) - the place has been there for decades...

i have always love the 2 bars that are often only open Friday and Saturday night. it's a special feeling. 39 hotel with it's apartment like feel; Next Door, i love this one because you have so much space to: drink, talk story to your friends, dance to a live band and of course, have fun on the weekends.

somebody told me that Hawaii (mainly Oahu/Honolulu) was a miniature Los Angeles. slow-paced (try Molokai and Lanai). the food, I like the food ! I've been to Molokai once, it is quite laid back and a closely knit community (think Hawaiian homestead land like Waimanalo ('Nalo town) or Papakolea next to the Punchbowl cemetery area). i never went to Lanai yet. This is a place where everybody knows everybody and their business (gossip). quite relaxing to tell you the truth..

as a Hawaii guy might ask Mr. Caan: "What is Scott's pilikia (problem) ?"

3 months, 3 weeks ago on Caan he say that?

Reply

agreed. we do have a crystal meth "ice" problem here. maybe Scott has "island fever" or "rock fever" as my room mate calls it (who's also a mainland transplant). my room mate loves it here. Caan might not love passing someone a cup, Spam (a Hormel U.S. mainland product transformed into a Hawaiian steak), eating a late night meal at Zippy's, Leonard's Malasadas, oxtail stew (or soup), popcorn with arare (kaki mochi or mochi crunch ?), a coco puff from Liliha Bakery, a Loco Moco from L&L Drive Inn or a plate lunch from Rainbow Drive Inn, but he still has to respect the people and the aina ! Without his dad's help,  or his fans, Scott might be on a stairway to nowhere. James Caan is a Hollywood legend, from the old NBC "Las Vegas" series or "Leaving Las Vegas" movie, which was shot in Kauai. (I wanna see the "Hunger Games" sequel Catching Fire now since there is no "The River," "The Last Resort," "Lost," "Hawaii," "Marker," "Raven," "Byrds of Paradise," or "One West Waikiki" tv series to compliment the "Hawaii 5-0" show.)

there were lots of lunch wagon trucks, people, NFL related clothes, 1 police car and lights (like at a baseball stadium or "Friday Nights" high school football game in Texas). Huge crowd !

A Waipahu landmark, like Highway Inn, K's Bento-Ya, Laverne's Catering and Take Out, Rocky's Coffee Shop, Leeward Drive Inn, HC Drive Inn, Kuni Japanese restaurant, Elena's or Thelma's Restaurant (Filipino, of course) - just like an old sugar mill or the famous Plantation Village.
