@Jay Argentina If Gus plays more than 1 game, he can't go down (unless we give him away over waivers). Any more than 1 game, and we have to move a contract. No need to, only have to.

@Twig @ThroatShot Only $925k off the cap if he makes it through as opposed to $1.9m off if he's claimed. It's not the roster spot that is the new problem- it will be $$$.

We all need to hope he gets claimed. If not, that means someone else has to be waived or traded (and waiving Sammy won't solve it). I'm afraid of what would have to come next.

@marti783 My big problem with everything is Tatar and Nyquist. They are Top 6 players. They had the best points-per-minute on the team during the regular season last year. As it stand now, they both are looking at being put in a grinding role on the 4th Line if they are lucky. More likely, they will be press box'd. Most likely, one will experience one of those fates and the other will be traded. Both are just too good to be sold off for a 2nd Rd. pick. Would I rather have one year of Bert than a career of Tatar? No, I'd rather Bert have gotten compliance bought out. Would I rather have one year of Alfie than a career of Tatar? Nope. Would I rather have Cleary for a few years than a career of Tatar? LOLOLOLOLOLOL. We have to let the kids play. I was enraged last year with them on the 3rd line, and now we are looking at cheap trades to clear roster space and/or the press box with no AHL options let? Wow...

A Wings team that took the President's Trophy team to Game 7 in OT for Round 2, and an AHL-affiliate Griffins that win the Calder. Too much talent on the big league team and in the system to fail. We can bicker about whether we sign the right FAs, don't ever make a useful trade, have the right lines, etc., etc.; however, this system is so loaded with talent we showed STILL ARE and LONG WILL BE a dominant franchise. Great finish to the season for some of the Winglings!

So, we have 20 roster players signed right now, not counting our free agents of Andersson, Nyquist, Brunner, Kindl, or Smith. From our attempts to sign Brunner, I would have to assume we are looking to grab all of them. That puts us at 25 roster players. Sounds like they want Cleary back too, so 26. Acquire Weiss, and that's 27. 27, as in 4 over the max. Throw two buyouts in there (hopefully), but that leaves a minimum of 2 other players who have to be moved. Who will they be, how, and why?

@FiveforFive  I want him to stay as much as the next guy, but let's look at the lineup of forwards without any additions (these are my line theories based on what I think Babs might do)...

Nyquist-Datsyuk-Abby
Tatar-Zetterberg-Franzen
Bert-Helm-Samuelsson
Emmerton-Helm-Eaves

Now, I suppose if we buyout BOTH Bert and Sammy, that might make room for Miller for a year or two (too many young guys coming up with more potential upside that will need the roster spot). If we buyout one or both, I would seriously hope it is to clear space for the Top 6 guy we just signed to take Abby's spot on the higher line.

@behood19 Hossa almost certainly will not fulfill the final years of his contract. Because of a penalty in the last CBA targeting those handful of contracts like that, the Hawks would have a $9.1M cap hit the first year he didn't play and an $18.2M hit each subsequent year. An $18.2M cap hit penalty basically means that their AHL affiliate that year will be better than them. They can't take that ludicrous risk on him. Honestly, they will probably do it next summer (why not get one more year with him at no risk?), but still it seems like it's got to happen.

@AnthonyC KH has made is overly clear he's not going to buyout Franzen, and he has a good point. Streakiness aside, he's a 30-goal scorer for $3.95M per year in cap hit. That's a value you can't argue with when we are paying guys who are totally useless almost the same amount. Any penalties we risk with him couldn't be large and that's a risk you take with any player you sign to a long-term contract. Really, he isn't signed into an abnormally late age.

Keep Tootoo for Line 4. Matt Cooke and Raffi Torres are UFAs. Sign them and make it a line. Rather than Line 4 being "The Grind Line," it could be the "Line of Douchery and Death." Of course I kid, but wouldn't that be a hilarious line to line up across from Crosby and Malkin the first game we play them and tell the guys to go for broke the second the puck is dropped? el-oh-el

I think there's trade value in Quincey. No where near the 1st Round Pick, but I'm sure we could get a 2nd Round pick for him or something. No need to buy him out, just market him. Sammy and Bert for the buyouts, imo.

@marti783 Smith probably did cost us a game or three. However, I'm OK with that. If it were Bert or Sammy costing us games, no. The difference? Youth gotta learn somehow. Unfortunately, our D is too shallow with good veterans to cover for them, so that's going to happen. Of course I'd rather us win, but like Twig said above, I hope Smith learned a lot and will be a reborn player next season.

I really hope we re-sign Brunner for a long time at a bargain price (i.e. Franzen-style contract). He's going to be great, but right now, he's a little too weak. He needs to bulk up over the summer and become more stable on his skates. Once he does that, Brunner, Tatar, and Nyquist can truly become the Euro Triplets. I am excited about our future, and I hope we chill our with signing washed-out old guys and give more and more young guys opportunities to succeed in the big leagues.

I really felt like the refs were the memorable thing from this game. In my opinion, it was the worst refereed game I have ever watched. Ignoring brutal illegal acts (elbow to the face of Smith early, Franzen getting boarded, etc., etc.) and then calling someone random things against both teams, of course mostly favoring the Hawks. I do think there was too much crease crowding going on in that no-goal, but it wouldn't have been wrong to count it either. That said, their counted goal should have never happened with the Wings instead on a 5-minute major PowerPlay. If you think about it, the Hawks got the better end of that. They traded 1 goal + a Major Penalty for 1 goal. Brad Watson needs to be fired.

The Hawks had good first shifts of periods, but other than that, they were pretty much weak and pathetic. The wise and mighty Dan McNeil had told me that the Wings were so far beneath the Hawks that they shouldn't be allowed on the same rink together. That must suck terribly to lose in such an embarrassing fashion on home ice and home ice advantage overall to a Pewee team. What does that make the Hawks- a team of 5-year old girls? Their organization, team, "fans," and "writers" are all jokes. No trolls coming out today I'm sure, as they don't understand the game well enough to understand what just happened.

He's the only goalie with high-end skill still in his prime this team has had since I've been alive (almost 30 years). Has he let in a weak goal or two here and there? Yes, but everyone does. He's basically facing beautiful one-time setups by his defense for the Hawks (*glares at Smith*) and a parade of breakaways. McGuire can say he chokes in the 3rd Period, but it isn't him that chokes- it's his team. Watch the games instead of just looking at stats...

The things that really bothered me with Smith were the abominable, avoidable icings. The guy would be gliding uncontested toward his own blue line, and then he'd just lob it all the way down in the general vicinity of absolutely no one. He either didn't care at all or he totally cracked under the pressure of the opening puck drop. I believe the latter. He needs to learn from the press box for a game or two.

I loved how the CNBC crew obsessed over how good the ref was at recognizing Datsyuk's goal. They must have talked about it for 5 minutes. A) He was doing his relatively simple job. B) IT BLEW UP THE WATER BOTTLE. I don't know that he saw the puck go in and out of the net, but when the bottle goes IED, it's a goal.

McCarty would have never played in the league today; he would have been suspended the whole time. I understand safety, but this was the fault of the guy with the puck not the hitter. The part about Perry was best. We should have signed #25 to a 1-game contract for tonight.

@Twig Agreed, and agreed. I think his best this year was better than either of the other two. Also take into account our opponent: the Ducks. I would like to see him step into the lineup, but I have a feeling it will be onto the 3rd Line. That's a worst case lineup scenario for me- Abby and Cleary stay in the Top 6, while someone from the only line with three people on the same page in terms of skill and effort gets someone kicked off.

I saw a huge difference in our PK strategy comparing the last week of the season with last night. Last week of the season, we were giving huge pressure. All four players were attacking the puck or someone. Last night, they sat back and hoped shots hit them. Not good enough.  The refs were pretty consistent calling nothing last night (at least fair-ish), but that really favors a thug, lower-skilled team like the Ducks. I hate how the sport totally changes when playoffs come, because refs stop enforcing rules. They allegedly don't want to decide games, but what this league seems to not realize is that IS what decides a lot of playoff games.

This will be the year that I remember in two ways: individuals overcoming mismanagement and the wave of young talent breaking in. Pav, Hank, Jim, and Co. carried this team. Even when nothing the team did made sense, they carried us to wins that turned out to be exactly what we needed to make the playoffs.Brunner, Nyquist, Tatar (especially Tatar...), Andersson, Lashoff, Danny D... that's a long list of newbies. There have been times when the goalie was the only non-rookie on the ice. And they didn't look bad. In fact, they have looked brilliant at times. I'm not sure if I put Smith on that list though. He was the #1 disappointment for me during the season. Too hestitant, afraid to make mistakes, at times. Too reckless others. He reminded me of a bigger, younger Quincey. Part of me says trade him this summer. We have so many young guys coming up who look great that it wouldn't be hard to replace this season. Plus, most of the league looks at him as a great prospect, so there should be good value. Another part says we need to let him develop. Not my decision to make, and I assume he'll be kept; however, I really hope he steps it up in the playoffs and stats on some Xanax in the off-season.

Aside from Fil, Cleary, Smith, Quincey, and Kindl, I thought everyone was great tonight. Even those guys weren't TOO bad. The biggest issue was the PowerKill Unit #2; holy crap. I was a little worried with the effort when we controlled the play early on and things didn't go our way, but they held it together. I'm glad Miller's injured, because Eaves deserves to be a on 2nd or 3rd scoring line. Guy's a beast with heart and skill. Danny D's rolling up onto the PowerPlay, which is good to see. I have loved the last two games. Even if we'd have lost, I would have enjoyed watching them. Guys giving effort and acting like they care. Much better hockey to watch, and we're picking up steam at just the right time (assuming we make it in).
