Tell me, how was what dorsett brought today any different than what Avery brought? That's not a knock against the guy, I loved Avery and really liked that dorsett played on the edge. We have a coach who makes arbitrary decisions and lets his ego get in the way of coaching this team...how else explain breaking up lines that are hot or leaving Richards on the Nash Line well into the second when anyone could see nothing

The minute they signed Richards this all was implied... Do you think Torts doesnt believe we have a shot?

Give me a a fucking break! What do you want the owner to say ..."well are expectations are to at least reach the second round this year..." this team should start thinking Stanley cup or bust. It's like let's pretend were not a contender so that if we don't win we won't be too disappointed.

It's truly surprising that people are surprised by all of this. He attempted to go down to the whale earlier in the year and be a professional and look where it got him. What's his alternative at at this point? To continue quietly being a professional and pray? Yeah, being a quiet professional is what made him so effective all these years, right?

The Rangers claimed him, didn't they. I think pure and simple Avery is doing what he has to do to not spend the rest of the season with the Whale.

Yeah, I would say this is all very much calculated. Hope he's able to get back in the NHL...it

I think Avery is playing a game of Russian roulette. He obviously has no other option. If he goes down to the whale and goes about things in a quiet manner it could give the impression that he's lost his fire. By doing what he's doing, which I think is one part frustration and one part calculation, he's saying, " hey I'm f-ing pissed about not being in the NHL!"

I thought the same thing about Torts. I've really been unhappy with how he's treated Avery and how he plays favorites, but man, what a decent human being.

Fine, Torts has problems with Avery, but he owes it to the team to give him a chance to help, he's done way more than that for EC, trying to pump up Head Case's ego earlier in the season by saying he's the complete package...I wonder what would have happened if Avery didn't pop in a few goals (important goals) or if he'd taken some bad pentalies...oh wait, he'd still be getting well over 17 minutes of ice time, power play, short-handed, the works, just like Dubinsky, right?

I really can't understand people getting upset about one of our players celebrating a goal. This is the league today...and obviously some of our fans: let's treat everyone with respect, get in line, don't say the wrong thing...sportsmanship...blah, blah, blah...for christ sakes! Maybe after a goal is scored the player should go talk to the opposing goaltender: "that was an excellent try, don't beat yourself up, I'm sure you usually make that save."

Did everyone notice how every player on the ice was trying to get Dubinsky the puck in the final min.? Thought that was very classy! I don't want to sound ridiculous, but I hope wolski and Rupp stay out... Neither have the speed or the hunger of Mitchell and hagelin

I agree about Dubinsky ... I like Feds but to me Dubinsky is the bigger threat if he can get going...when that line was together earlier in the season none of them (Dubinsky, Richards or Calli) were playing well... Now you have Calli and Richards taking off.. I think it makes sense to put them back together

Now that's what I call resilience Kevin :)! I agree hard not to get excited. I do have a problem with how Dubinsky is being handled though... I think he's being driven into a hole by torts...yes, he's not playing at his best, but is giving him virtually no pp time the way to go?

@KevinDeLury Yes, calls were made but I think the residual effect of standing up for a teammate trumps a power play that would have probably proved ineffective. I guess I'm living in the good old days, but 20 years ago either of those plays would have led to vicious retribution.

I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but tonight's game frustrated me. First, I have to disagree that the team showed resilience...I think this game was lost by the caps not won by the rangers. Sure, they had to convert on all the mistakes that the caps made, but they made a lot. Second, I'd rather see this team lose and stand up for a teammate than win and back down because a pentaly has been called...I'm talking about the hit on Gaborik and Hank getting steamrolled! You could see Girardi thought about going after Ovechkin, but decided against it.

I know we won tonight, but I have such a problem with how Torts manages this team that I feel like we lost. It's not just the 4 1/2 minutes of ice time for Avery, which didn't really surprise me. Well, it does surprise me. Because, baring injury or poor play there's just no reason any player on a team should be getting four minutes a game, that includes Devereaux. Again, I love Dubinsky, (I spent almost $300 on his jersey), but I don't see how his play deserves more ice time. There are other players too...Boyle, Feds...I understand the idea of sticking with someone to get them going, but there's comes a time when you need to say "so and so isn't getting it done, he's going to sit a shift or a game." Getting back to Avery's 4 1/2 minutes: what the 4 + mins to Avery tells me is not that torts dislikes avery, which is blatantly obvious, but rather that he has favorites, not people he trusts, but favorites...there's a difference. Yeah, I'm a huge Avery and I'm pissed that someone who existed in spades thirty years ago in the NHL is being phased out, but I'm more pissed at how out of tune this coach is, how he can't swallow his pride, how he seems perpetually afflicted by a bout of hemorrhoids. I don't find his recent press conference cheeky, I find it fucking idiotic and unnecessary. He demands professionalism and accountability from his players, so why not himself? I also think that his setting players straight on the bench is a joke...he really thinks that motivates a player, a grown man...Christ! To me, the best coaches are the ones who know when to get out of the way and that's not something this guy knows how to do at all.

I don't understand how EC can play one good game out of 10 and he stays in the line up...how many lives does this guy have? The way this team is coached baffles me. Again, if he were smart he'd have Avery on the ice for the first shift of the game. He just completely negated what would have been a rabid crowd which would have surely motivated the team.

If Torts is smart he'll have Avery on for the first shift of Thursday's game

2 years, 10 months ago on He's Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!! | November

Also, if and when Avery does take a stupid pentaly (as even the smartest players on the rangers have been doing) it will be augmented by the fact that he's only playing a few shifts a game. I love Dubinsky, but he's prone to take some pretty dumb pentalies, yet (not so far this season) fans don't really focus on that because he's given an oppritunity to make up for those mistakes. I'm not saying Avery is Dubinsky, I'm just saying given more ice time he'd be able to establish more of a game. Part of the problem has to be him thinking "I have to do something big this shift" and that's where he invariably gets in trouble.

More than anything I want to see Avery back on the Rangers, but I fear that he will not be used enough to have an impact. It's hard for anyone to have an impact at 6-7 mins a game. I don't want to see him go to the Islanders, but if it meant he'd get to play I think that would be great for him and the league.
