That man must be rich by now. He's brilliant! Great story, Sandy. I like the idea of following up email campaigns with direct mail, too. We've had some problems with emails not going through, so the mailers would surely reach the folks we're not getting via email.

I seriously doubt Facebook will maintain it's dominance, especially considering the demographic shifts. That's why I advise business owners to maintain an active page, but focus their core strategy elsewhere. Why bother building a community who can't see anything you post?

You crack me up, Debrah. I'm with you---the more we as printers talk about how we're not dead, the more we conjure up negative stereotypes in people's minds.

@EricBenndorf Hello and thanks for your feedback! I think it's interesting that you used the word "trick" because that implies deliberate deceit. In essence your criticism reaffirms my point.

Once again, Rand sets the bar for the business community. I sure hope he keeps up with Whiteboard Friday, though. I need that in my life.

Very useful post, especially since Facebook decided to kill organic reach. This is a great example of how to use other sites to drive traffic and sales, something Facebook was never very useful for.

This is a big decision for a business to make. I think it's best to do everything in-house if at all possible. Agencies can be an asset, but social media is so personal that they need to understand your brand in & out. That's a tall order.

Great post Paul! I've certainly noticed this in terms of social media marketing. For example, a recent blog post I wrote was shared several times for 2 reasons: the headline and the graphic. It seems the image resonated more than the rest of the content. I hope more businesses will make note of the visual shift when sharing their blog posts.

Great tips! I'd add that it's probably a good time to check your site's speed. You will be getting a higher volume of traffic to your site, which can impact your speed. Better to get everything as fast as possible than lose customers on the big day.

This is an excellent idea for retailors. It seems like this concept could work as a kind of extension of small business Saturday.

Couldn't agree more on the holiday promotional materials. The sooner you get your greeting cards and calendars in, the less you'll have to worry about during the busy holiday season.

Nothing irks me more than simple grammatical errors. They always look unprofessional. No excuses!

This advice is pretty insulting. You're basically suggesting ways to avoid paying writers for their work. That's not entrepreneurial, it's exploitative.
It's a common misconception that you can "hire" interns, force them to work for you for free, and reap the benefits. I suggest you do research on applicable labor laws before you publish content. Interns do very little work. They are supposed to spend their tenure at your firm learning, not performing slave labor.

I have a hard time believing the Tumblr/Instagram stats. Then again, it's difficult to distinguish the content coming from young adults (say 18-25) from teenagers. Same mentality for the most part.

I think this article makes a lot of sense overall. So many small business owners have very unrealistic expectations from social media. One thing about automation--I personally don't use it at all, but it does make sense in certain cases. However, I would advise against using any 3rd party platform to post to Facebook. I realize that Facebook recently said they don't penalize pages for posting this way, but from my experience I believe that's an inaccurate characterisation of EdgeRank.

It's awesome that you guys are supporting skateboarding, but I'm a bit surprised by the article's premise. Maybe I'm biased because I skate, but I see a lot of interest in skateboarding in mainstream society, at least in the US. In the last few years there have been a few movies that focused on skateboarding and Penny skateboards are extremely popular here in Los Angeles with teens, younger adults, and collectors. I go by my old high school frequently, and there were almost no skaters when I attended. Now there are tons of kids cruising around on all types of boards.

This is a really nice infographic! I wish color was at the very end, though. So many clients get hung up on color, when that's actually the last consideration in the design processs.

Appreciate your honesty, very refreshing. I agree with everything here, except for #3. I believe there are people who just don't "get" social media and probably never will. Social media is about communication---if you're not a good communicator, you probably won't engage many people. Humor is a prime example. We all run into folks who just don't seem to have a sense of humor. That type of person probably isn't going to be able to build a thriving social community.
