@whalz but who took their jobs? Carrick......and Orr?

Not to hate, or take too much from pre-season results. But remember how I/we thought the Leafs signed too many forwards this off-season? Try filling out a full 23 man roster right now.....it's tough. Couple good new faces though. Would like to see Kozun as a fourth line/PK specialist.

@Pent_House Nice! I thought it was still pretty favourable to you. Even if Enroth is buffalo's starter next year (big if), it's still Buffalo - they always suck. But nice to have 2 D-man keepers. Good luck :)

@Bring the Cup Home He's a different (improved) player this year for sure - more so than any other in league I dare to say. He's pretty much kept all his strengths, yet eliminated all his faults.

Was at the game tonight.

A few thoughts:

Worst game from Raymond by far. Showed little effort/care on most plays.

Best game by Ranger by far. Won many important puck battles, esp. in 2nd period.

Adding to point 5. Before the breakout lead by Dion's break up, the captain had a chance to pinch in the anaheim zone. Old Dion would have, and it would have been a mistake leading to a 2 on 1 goal. New Dion thought twice, made the right decision, got back, and then the forced breakout. New Dion is a stud.

Kessel is a stud.

Rielly has one of the best breakout passes in the league, and sorry Dion, but just don't even try to copy (he did, and can't).

Our 2 goals against were caused by A) A 19 year old rookie that hasn't yet perfected how to play a 2 on 1 in this league. And B) A slight mix up where we let the other team walk out un-impeded from behind the net. So the way I see it, we were just a bit of experience away from shutting out one of the hottest teams in the NHL

My quick thoughts after media day:

1) Kadri looked like a teenager last year. Looks like a man now. I think that bodes well for the team.

2) Is anyone NOT a Paul Ranger fan now?

@Savo43 I agree he's good. And brings skill. And I'm all for letting the guy try to prove himself to Carlyle and maybe steal a spot. But that brings up another reason I don't like it. The message it sends to a guy like D'Amigo (or whoever is next on the call up list). He's worked his ass off the last couple years to get a chance to make the big club. If that just gets given to an established NHLer walk-on who signs a friendly contract, it might be difficult for Spott to tell the kids on the Marlies "Work hard, every game, and you'll get our chance on the big club".

But I've been wrong before. Maybe more competition is always better?

@Savo43 Woah now. Lets not compare Raymond to Kessel (jk). Of course he can accommodate a top 5 NHL winger on his first line without needing him to be physical (although he did knock down Chara in the playoffs). But that doesn't mean he'll let that slide on the third line (read: grabo and macA gone).

And i say there may be room without Kadri because that's a missing roster spot. Doesn't matter if they play the same position (they have other options at center), all that matters is the roster spot.

@Savo43 @-Keon- @GeorgeCastanza MacArthur played like he thought he was more skilled than he actually was. Tried to do too much by himself and ended up turning the puck over. That said, Brian Murray is one of - if not - the smartest GM(s) in the league. If he see's something in MacArthur, then he's probably right. I'm betting on a great season from him in Ottawa, but the Leafs are better without him.

I can't see any way we make a spot for Raymond, unless Kadri remains unsigned. Raymond doesn't fit Carlyle's style at all.

@Burtonboy @Pent_House @dlb eh @wiski I think that spot on the 4LW is Broll's in 2 years. But are there any more intimidating guys in the league than McLaren? I like him as an old school enforcer put in the lineup now and then to keep other teams honest.

For fun, I put together this prospect depth chart by position. It's not set up with best chance to make the team at the top. Rather, I tried to slot players in at their where they might be a best fit (if they develop in a best case scenario). I set the forward lines up as 1 - scoring, 2 - scoring, 3 - shutdown, 4 - energy. And yes I know Gauthier and Biggs could be slotted up higher, but I couldn't find another player to fill those roles better (imagine Komarov came back to center Biggs and Broll on the 4th line?), and I was trying to see where we are strong and where we are weak in the organizations future.

Leivo           Verhaeghe    Cameranesi

Toninato    McKegg         Brown

Ross           Gauthier        Ashton

Broll            Carrick          Biggs

Reilly                 Granberg

Percy                Blacker

Finn                  Holzer

MacWilliam

The bad news, I only see 4-5 forwards that stand a good chance of filling those spots. The good news, I think we could start that entire defense in 5 years if they develop properly. The lesson, any trades the leafs make should try to return a top-6 forward prospect.

@dlb eh @Xxxxxnew I only remember seeing JVR dish off perfect saucer's to Kessel on 2-on-1's, multiple times. I think JVR and Kess should be a lock together when healthy. Just my opinion. Regardless, it looks like Carlyle has a few good problems to sort out this year.

@Burtonboy I'm not advocating it - but as a test, what if we take Phaneuf out of the picture. What potential lines do we have then.

Gardiner - Franson

Rielly - Granberg

Ranger - Blacker

I think we start looking a little soft without Dion.
