I believe both Chapman and Montori Hughes could be a darn fine tandem to alternate at the nose position. Both are unbelievably strong, but both could stand to cut back on the biscuits.  If each guy could shed about 20 lbs. their stamina and agility would improve quite a bit without any appreciable loss of stoutness in the middle.  I believe Chapman is motivated to be great, but have heard some negatives about Hughes' work ethic.

Oh well, if Hughes flames out, UDFA Zack Kerr might hustle his way onto the 53-man. In any event, our front seven looks to be pretty stout this year (I hope).

Thanks for the great work !

Newsome might develop into a good player, but for the first 4 games I'd look at Josh McNary to fill in for Robert Mathis.  He's been in the system for a year, and was an excellent pass rusher at West Point.  He's also stouter than Newsome and plays the run well.

Good analysis, Kyle.  I really like this kid's attitude and willingness to put in the hard work to get better at his craft.  With pro coaching and the mentoring he can get from #87, we may just have something here. Now, if Da'Rick will keep HIS nose to the grindstone and max his potential, our receiving corps starts looking pretty formidable. Wayne, Nicks, TY, Da'Rick, Donta . . . . (Brazill, Whalen ?) . . .  NICE !

P.S.-  Where is Greg and when are you guys going to get back to doing podcasts ? I really miss "Check it to Pancakes" !!  I would've thought you'd have put at least one together around the draft/CFA signings.

I hope Pep opts to utilize Chud's knowledge in order to better facilitate his own absorbance of the pro game.  Chud and Clyde are invaluable assets for Pep, and if he's half as smart as I believe that he is he'll relax and seek their counsel.

Two possible outcomes - 1) The offense ascends to elite levels ; 2) Pep is even more hotly pursued for head coaching vacancies.  In which case, Pagano has his insurance policy already on board to ensure offensive continuity (or at least some degree of familiarity).

Part of me wonders if secretly Pags and Grigsy weren't hoping Pep would take the Vanderbilt job. Just a thought.

Nice article, Greg -

Free Agency -  I agree that Grigsy should think quality, not quantity.  Alex Mack, a decent guard and a DE that can rush the passer as well as play the run. Maybe a CB if the money is there.

Draft- I would wait to draft a WR until 2015 when, hopefully, we have a 1st rounder. This year I'd totally go after defense, especially secondary help.Getting Allen and Reggie back, plus the development of the young WR's should be fine for 2014.

Our own FA's - I agree with most of your ideas, although I doubt Brown or Bradshaw are in a Colts uniform again.

I think you're quite right in that Grigson really needs to knock this offseason out of the park.

Despite the loss Cincy, there were signs of an offensive pulse.  The young threesome of wide receivers has me hopeful of good things to come.  The coaches have the next three weeks to solidify new found chemistry between them and Luck

The O-line actually looked half decent.  Reitz at left guard is a move I've screamed loudly for.  Luck actually had some time to set up and throw.  Thornton is going to be good, but he needs to play on the right side where he is more comfortable.

Josh McNary deserves more playing time.  I think he's Pat Angerer's successor, and his athleticism far outshines Pat's.

Anyway, let's use these last three games to regroup/reload on the run and get ready for a playoff run. Glass half full !

Necessity is the mother of invention.  This injury-ravaged squad is at a critical point if they're going to make any noise whatsoever in the playoffs.  The next four games are the chance for the next wave of Colts to seize opportunity by the throat, or gag trying.

Daniel is at the top of my list of young guys I am intrigued by.  How he handles himself hitting and being hit.  270 lbs. moving as fast as he moves can be explosive  I can't wait .

Da'Rick Rogers comes next in my mind.  With the physical skills he possesses, how well does he step up to become a reliable target for Andrew ?  Can he help minimize the sting of losing Reggie.

Third on my list is Josh McNary.  He's already flashing athleticism that's much needed on this defense, especially in the passing game.

I hope it's not unfair to have high hopes that these three guys can make a difference and give this team a boost . But, they will be watched closely by Colts fans Sunday looking for a spark.

Not out of the question for Indy to do the same.  Lotsa interesting late season roster additions that could conceivably kickstart the Colts for a run.

I just hope the coaches can take advantage of the next four weeks to integrate Da'Rick Rogers and Josh McNary into the lineups.  Many lessons to be learned from this year, and no matter how far they go in this year's playoffs, the future is BRIGHT !

As far as Da'Rick Rogers' success this week is concerned, I'm reminded of what Peyton would say - " I throw . . . you catch . . . it's really not that hard ! "

He'll have an elite young quarterback throwing him the ball.  Run good routes, then catch the damn ball when it's thrown your way.  Simple, really.  A child's game.

Even though Chris Rainey is listed as a running back, his lack of size coupled with elite speed suggests to me he may fit better at wide receiver, in addition to kick returns.  Half a dozen touches at receiver, plus kick/punt returns puts his skillset to its best use, all the while acting as a fifth wide receiver.  He's got the hands for it.

BTW- as things stand right now, there are only three safeties on the 53-man.  Bethea, Landry, Sergio Brown.  Could we be looking to re-sign Larry Asante ?

Count me among the legions calling for some playing time for Da'Rick Rogers.  I'm bumfuzzled as to why the heck he hasn't been given a shot so far.

I'd also be interested in seeing Chris Rainey tried as a slot receiver in addition to kick return duties.  I think he has decent hands to go along with his 4.3 speed.  Hilton, Rogers and Rainey might make a better wide receiver group than what we have now.

@chip_bennett     I just wonder how much different this team would be if , instead of Pagano awaiting them on the sidelines, it was someone the likes of Parcells or Shula ?  Maybe it's unfair to look at Chuck in that light, since I can't possibly know how he is when not  under public scrutiny.

Neither of those old school guys was considered a "player's coach", to my knowledge.  Just legendarily successful.

I agree with your "No more lip service".  It's past time for decisive measures.  The status quo isn't working.

@DougEngland   Good points.  We do lack overall talent, but coaches could certainly do better jobs of scheming and adjusting.  Take a critical look at what opponents are doing to them.

This must be the week of taking stock of themselves, then making some changes to shake things up.  Both approaches and personnel.

Lovely article, Greg.

My heart was broken when Peyton was let go, too.  But, I am a long-time Colts fan, and a short-time Peyton fan.  He will always occupy a special place in my heart, but he is no longer a Colt .  As you said, Andrew is now King Colt !  Long live the King !

Maybe , after Denver's players saw the Colts lay a huge egg in San Diego, they will be ripe for their own "trap" game.  Although, I truly believe that our Colts are good enough to put a beat-down on Denver similar to what they did in Frisco.

Don't hurt Peyton . . .  just kick his ass !  :-)

I should think that this would be another moment for Jim Irsay to give his "Lieutenants" an earful.  Hopefully in private this time, but an earful nonetheless.

Instead of shackling Andrew and limiting Trent to a role of "body puncher", go ahead and hand the keys to Andrew and more intelligently incorporate the talents Trent possesses into the game plan.

Great stuff, Kyle !  I, believe it or not, have been saying the same since half way thru 2012.  Peyton only has one SB ring, and I attribute that to consistently deficient squads around him, and key players curling up and disappearing in the post season when play got really physical.

This era of Colts football, at Jim Irsay's insistence, features a balanced roster with talent in all three phases.  In other words, this team is built to make a playoff run.  This year !

But, as you wrote, Andrew is the fulcrum.  The absolute driving force, but he doesn't have to do it all alone. I wonder what the weather will be like in New Jersey in early February 2014 ?

O-line's blocking efforts were nowhere near as strong as 49ers game.  Even with Joe Reitz in as 6th lineman acting as a tight end.  Pass pro up the middle was less than stellar, as usual.
