Old Fat Bald Guy
Bio not provided
@JasonKeller @Old Fat Bald Guy Khan said he didn't think Lashoff would clear waivers. He's under contract through the 2016 playoffs and his cap hit is $725,000. He's 23. He's plus-2 even though he only has two points.
1 year ago on Alfie's Return to Ottawa Recap 12.01.2013
Good discussion about when DeKeyser comes back on Khan's blog today. Commenter theorizes that Miller's recent play makes him a good bet to stick around, and that if no one else goes on LTIR to create the space for DeKeyser, they won't have much choice but to waive Cleary. (Bert and Sammy have over-35 contracts, so waiving them won't supply the necessary cap relief.) Khan replies: "You might be right. Another possibility sending down Lashoff and hoping he sneaks through waivers."
NO. NO. TWENTY-THREE TIMES NO.
Where is the Mule the Playmaker phase coming from? All of a sudden he's a primary assist machine.

Hey, Kenny! He followed us home! Can we keep him?

Well, this is getting old. Would really like to see Nyquist.

No jump. That will happen a few times a year, and the third road game in four days is a likely time for it to happen. It usually bothers me when they get outworked by an inferior team, and that happens way too often, but last night they didn't look overconfident or disinterested. Just tired.

As much as I'd like it to be true that he scored on his first shift, alas, Ken Daniels got that one wrong. He had played 21 seconds on the kill of Smith's first penalty. It was his first even-strength shift.
1 year, 1 month ago on Red Wings vs Oilers Recap: 11.2.13
Hoo boy. I'm not saying the Wings deserved to win, but that game was a primer on what's wrong with the NHL rulebook and its officials. A BS whistle over an imagined medical issue -- I hope you don't like to see goals off extended periods of pressure, guys, because Smith just showed everybody what to do about that. An even-up embellishment call, something that is still in the rules even though the refs get it wrong the vast majority of the time they call it, and even though the 2005 changes of emphasis pretty much eliminated the diving problem (because you don't need to dive to get a call). All it needed was an "I lost sight of the puck" call where the replay showed the puck was never frozen and was in the goal before the whistle, and they'd have covered the whole menu. There are times I feel like turning off the TV when they show the names of the referees before the opening faceoff, and last night I should have listened to my gut.
1 year, 2 months ago on Red Wings Recap 10.19.2013
That looked like the Avs of the mid-90s, and they largely got away with it. Miller getting the extra penalty was a ridiculous call -- the hit that started that might not have needed to be a penalty, but it was worse than his mild retaliation for it -- and Colorado scored on that power play. Gutsy effort by the Wings.

I'm extremely disappointed about Brunner and I think the whole day has an Oates-for-Federko feel about it. Everybody is talking about sample size with Brunner, but he's already played in about as many big games as Weiss has. I think they overpaid for both guys.
@Jay Argentina White is a free agent, so no need for a buyout there -- not sure if that's what you meant.
1 year, 6 months ago on Mule is Staying Put
I get the frustration, because Franzen is streaky and when he's not scoring it feels like he's not doing anything -- whether that's accurate or not. But the cap hit isn't that bad and the goals happen eventually, at a rate that's consistently (per season) above one for every three games he plays.
I'm with you on buying out 37 and 44, too.
@HoweRYa And then Obi Wans Ginobili went to San Antonio and said "Manu, I am your father." :D

Agree about Babcock and the future. Disagree about the refs. Laughing at "ignore all media outlets that don't have a pro-Red Wings bias. Because they're click whores if they don't think we wuz robbed."
I'm amused by all this chatter about goal posts after this game. There's a lot of luck in hockey, to be sure, but coming close and being unlucky aren't always the same things. Pro tip: If you hit the inside of the post, it might go in, if you hit the outside of the post, it won't.
I'm as surprised as I am happy by the turn in this series. No matter what happens from here, this team is maturing far faster than I thought. And the situation with Toews is mystifying. Who'd have thought that in late May 2013 Kane would look like the mature one?

I think you're right.
I guess 28 minutes of keeping the score tied when your team is being dominated is not long enough to impress some people.

@haiggrinder @Old Fat Bald Guy I don't think Lashoff is available. He's playing for the Griffins and if I correctly understood something Ansar Khan wrote a while back, they've used up their non-emergency callups.
1 year, 7 months ago on Red Wings Playoff Recap 5.15,2013
I hope you're right, Twig, but this game was about the way I expect this series to go. Too many dangerous forwards vs. not enough reliable defensemen.
I really want Bert to stop yapping back. Mouthing off is Anaheim's game. Don't feed it.

Filppula gave me a Robert Lang flashback. The game has been over for three hours and I'm still a little creeped out by that.
I think Colaiacovo might be an overall better player right now, but they're looking small and weak on D without DeKeyser, and Lashoff is more of an answer for that. Still, I'm only feeling good when I see 55 and 52.

The MacLean-Mourinho GIF should be in some sort of GIF Hall of Fame.
@austikyl I'm old enough to remember Sid Abel as an analyst on the Red Wings radio broadcasts, so I had a bad feeling when they hit the post repeatedly in the second period. Sid always said that was a "bad omen."
@marti783 @austikyl I think you've got a point about the rose-colored glasses. I like the young talent and I'm optimistic about the future, but it's a fact that since the end of the Joey MacDonald-palooza winning streak in February 2012, if you forget about three-point games and count a loss as a loss, this team is 31-39 in the regular season and 33-44 overall. Detroit is not currently an elite team.
1 year, 7 months ago on Series Tied, But Dekeyser Down
@ThroatShot Motion seconded.
OK, I'm going to be a pie-eyed optimist for a second and say it occurred to me last night that the OT goal might be a standard part of Nyquist career retrospective videos 15 or 20 years from now. You might see it as often as you see Yzerman blast that slap shot past Jon Casey. I think this guy is going to be a big deal.
And what everybody else said about Saint Teemu of Helsinki. It was nice to see the referees cut him less slack about his "frustration" than the announcers did, and always do.

@Jay Argentina Two guys I didn't trust at all at the beginning of this season whom I trust completely now -- Kindl, whom everybody talks about, and Emmerton, whom nobody talks about.
1 year, 7 months ago on Red Wings vs Stars Recap: 2.27.2013
I'll fess up that at the beginning of the week, I thought they would need help. If they really needed seven points, I thought, they were toast. They did need seven, and got eight in the last six days of the season, with 15 goals for and three against, and not a single nervy finish. Their best players were their best players, as the saying goes, but a lot of the fringe guys were terrific, too. Tootoo, to mention one, scored one GWG and had a great assist on another.
Datsyuk's best game in quite a while, I think. Curious to see if Rinne plays Saturday. And what will be said about it if he does. That team has an unusually high dropoff from the #1 goalie to the #2.

@JOHNxJOHN I love the guy too, but I hope they don't re-sign him. I think he's past his prime. It's not a criticism, really. It's that where he is and where this franchise is, they need to go with the kids.

And if they'd worked this hard when they played against Columbus, they might be safely in the playoffs by now.
1 year, 8 months ago on Hey Detroit - Play Like The Blue Jackets And You'll Be Fine
@ThroatShot It's an all-rookie line! I hadn't even thought about that. I get excited every time those guys are on. Nyquist is a special talent, Brunner is going to be just fine if they get him off the freaking point on the power play where he has no idea what he's doing, and Andersson will be Joel Otto when he grows up. I don't know if they're going to get in, but I think five years from now we're going to think this was worth it.

Oh, absolutely. I was 12 when Dempsey kicked that field goal, Al. I threw a fit and my dad got pissed off at me. But Alex Karras missed, and Suh didn't. (By the way, the freakin' play before the kick was ruled a catch even though the Saints receiver was obviously out of bounds! Is 41 years long enough to be over it? Hell no!)
Al! Welcome back, I'd missed these running blogs. But how did you get video of me celebrating Megatron's touchdowns?
