@Mind Bomb @supercilious @Jay_Berg I'm fine with that as well... Just saying its bad cap management to fill out our third line with UFA contracts. Thats all. I love all of Bolland, Raymond, McC & Kulie

and Idk why we're talking about Broll... We've got Biggs, D'Amigo & Ross who are all slated to be 2nd or realistically very solid 3rd line guys.

If we can re-sign McClement & Bolland and plug one of those three guys or a cheap vet to fill in for a year until theyre ready, we'd be better off long term.

@Mind Bomb @supercilious @Jay_Berg I agree that ideally you want those guys on your team

But when you want to re-sign Kadri long term and Rielly, Gardiner, Franson, Bernier/Reimer because they are part of your top six or top four defence, or your starting tender,  you need to cut from somewhere else.

If you look at the salaries on capgeek, its impossible to be paying our third line between 10 and 12 million dollars and get all of our key players signed

Its simply not possible

Reply

@Mind Bomb @supercilious @Jay_Berg Bolland has been getting second line minutes with Kadri falling to the 3rd line when Bolland was putting up points

He's also a short handed specialist as well as getting PP time, where half of his goals came from

@Mind Bomb @supercilious @Jay_Berg Carlyle deploys his lines different than most coaches in the league

Guys on the third line are getting strict defensive duties, primarily in their own end coming up against the opposing best teams

Shutting down the opposing teams best players is their primary focus, not scoring goals.

With the fourth line playing 2-3 minutes in the playoffs, it essentially comes down to the top 6 to produce points.

9 months ago on Game in 10: Game #13, Maple Leafs 4 at Oilers 0

@Jay_Berg I'm not saying that we ditch our entire third line

but our top six is set and if we re-sign two of McClement, Bolland, Kulemin or Raymond, we should be fine in that regard

We've had enough injuries this year that guys like Broll & Leivo were playing in our top six and we were still relatively successful.

If we can augment the checking line with a guy like D'amigo or Ross or Biggs, I feel that we'd be better off cap-wise going forward

9 months ago on Game in 10: Game #13, Maple Leafs 4 at Oilers 0

@Mind Bomb @supercilious @Jay_Berg We don't need any goals from our bottom six

our bottom six hasnt scored any goals since Wilson left. Why would we expect anyone to come in and pot 15 goals while being a checking 3rd liner?

9 months ago on Game in 10: Game #13, Maple Leafs 4 at Oilers 0

@Jay_Berg We've got guys in the farm that can come up and play defensive that arent going to cost UFA prices

9 months ago on Game in 10: Game #13, Maple Leafs 4 at Oilers 0

Reply

@Jay_Berg We dont need any more offensive guys tbh

Kessel, JVR, Lupul, Kadri, Bozak, Clarkson are our top 6 for the next 5 years (unless somehow we can ditch bozak for a #1 C)

Third line should be filled with excellent checkers, whether its McClement, Kulemin or whoever. Theyre a dime a dozen and if they can be filled in with guys like D'amigo or Ross, its better cap management for us going forward rather than paying $3M+ UFA prices for guys to plug in the third line

Obviously not advocating letting everyone walk, but not all of Kulemin, Raymond, Bolland, McClement should be resigned at UFA rates

@TheCanucksnaphook So is Washington & Colorado. They already passed the law and the feds are going to turn a blind eye to it. You'll be able to buy a gram of pot for 8-10 dollars at pot shops in early 2014. All you need to do is provide ID to show you're over 21

@Greg Fenton @wendelsway1 @dlb eh Disagree that they've been more impactful. Lupul and Van Riemsdyk could be replaced internally with someone who could produce (albeit at a lesser rate). Bernier could be replaced by Reimer who has proven to be very capable.

If you take Phaneuf out of this team, it sucks. Who is our #1D eating up minutes to take the burden off of the young D? Franson? Gunnarsson by himself?

Phaneuf is the most essential cog in this team right now.

@mORRganRielly @Greg Fenton @wendelsway1 Phaneuf has been immense.

Not only is he playing against the hardest competition in the league, but he's still putting up points.

If our team is scoring while he's on the ice against the Crosby's and Giroux's, he's clearly doing something right

To the guy below who mentioned Gardiner for Eberle... thats probably the most ridiculous thing I've read in ages.

Eberle is an 80 pt first line winger.

Gardiner has played 92 career games and has never fully cemented himself as an NHL regular in the top 4

There's no chance in hell we ever get a guy like Eberle even if we throw in Reimer

@TheCanucksnaphook @supercilious then he shouldnt be responsible for shutting down the opposing top lines imo. Also, isnt he our leading pt producer?

9 months, 3 weeks ago on Morning Mashup: Franson poised to take on bigger role

Reply

@TheCanucksnaphook Line combos were terrible imo.

Lupul on the checking line was a waste. He mightve been able to spark Kadri.

Orr on Kadri's wing was pretty much like playing short handed. 9 minutes of ice time?

Anyone on the 4th line could've come up and played with Lupul & Kadri and it would've been more positive. Put Ashton with Raymond & Bolland and its a much more solid checking line.

Lupul was checking Duchene down low and it led to their first goal. He should never be in that position.

Obviously Carlyle knows more than I do, but I just don't see how it makes sense to deviate so far from what made us successful last year

Sure they are. Theres a difference between not being confident in either of your goalies, so they split time and being confident in throwing either of your goalies into any situation.

Schneider and Luongo split games last year and they're both starting goalies. Same would apply here.

I dont see why splitting time would have much of a factor. Luongo split time with Schneids. Its not like a goalie should be worth less because theres another solid goalie on the team

There are all sorts of scenarios that would land each team what they want

There's always holes created when making trades. You dont get something for nothing. One of the luxuries that a team like the oilers have is that they've got an influx of solid forwards. I'm sure that giving one of them up for stability in net for a decade is something they'd consider
