Interesting to see Giant Robot and Yoshi in the first half still. I bet we get lots of new info on them soon.

I can't disagree more about it being dull. I felt it was the best of the season. Part of that is the characterization of characters other than Oliver, which has been sorely needed - I'm loving the Roy/Diggle dynamic this episode had going, and both were better here than they've been all season by a large margin, and the same can be said for Laurel - but the directing this episode was unbelievably spectacular.

Every shot was perfect. The stuff on the mountain couldn't have surprised me more considering the show's budget/time constraints, and the action scenes were exceptional. They always are, but more than usual, I mean. Speaking of, the flashbacks are finally clicking into place this season, too. I love how they're finally putting the flashbacks and present day stuff together again, and Maseo is becoming a great character IMO.

All this to say: I loved this episode. It was late season 2 level, practically, which is the highest praise I can give it. I've seen it three times already. Hopefully they can keep it up for the rest of the season.

Series 5, no question. It had its low points, but it also had more terrific stories than any others, and an unexplainable magic no other series of the show has managed to achieve so consistently.

Jamie - oddly, he nailed Capaldi's Doctor and how to properly get humor out of him more successfully than Moffat. Moffat wrote some terrific stories - Dark Water, Last Christmas, and Listen are classics - but Mummy and Flatline were perfect standard episodes that just got the characters.

Easily A Christmas Carol. The End of Time Part 2 had a great final third or so, but everything before that was.... ugh.

That was close to being the best companion exit ever with the Doctor helping her with the cracker.... and then.... no.... but oh well. She's a perfectly great companion, but ANOTHER series feels like too much. I would have loved to see twelve and Shona together.

I'm not so sure Arkham City is underrated, considering most everyone thinks it's amazing, and it actually didn't sell too bad. Arkham Origins is far more underrated IMO, I freaking love that game, it really doesn't deserve the hate it gets (even if it is far inferior to Arkham City as you say). Anyways - great video! I totally forgot about Ducktales, I should pick that up soon.

I watched some early Eccleston and thought the show was OK, but nothing I wanted to watch past the second episode. Jump ahead a few months and I tried the Eleventh hour. Immediately I was addicted, and by the end of Flesh and Stone, I knew the show was something special. In other words... Matt Smith. Bow ties are cool.

I really wish this had released at a different time. I adored AC4 to bits and pieces, and this looks like a really solid port, so I'm sure I'd really like the game. But 60 bucks in the midst of all these releases? Nope. Hopefully after the holidays I'll get to pick it up, preferably for a bit cheaper.

Pandorica/Big Bang by far for me. Not just one of the best finales, but one of the best stories. Nothing else on this list even comes close IMO. Stolen Earth /Journey's End is second, because I love it despite the terrible ending, and Dark Water/Death in Heaven and Name of the Doctor are just after that. Everything else.... eh.

@Loleta  "....all things considered." It's a sequel to a really weird game that barely broke a million multiplatform on other consoles that DON'T have regular trouble selling more violent and "mature" games, and on consoles with far higher install bases. 300,000 wouldn't be ideal, but I honestly expected less. Bayonetta 2 DESERVES a lot more than that, but it's hard to expect that much in this situation.

This is TOUGH. Utopia's one of the best of the RTD era, and it brought the master back fantastically. I adore Dark Water, but I've only watched it once, so it's hard to choose.....

Some fair points, only the Cracks in Time arc shows that a heavy arc can be a major improvement. You can figure out what happens before the finale, but the finale still has plenty of twists and turns, and importantly, it was actually an incredibly satisfying episode. that said, you make good points. Heavy arcs can harm things, especially in season 6 and 7.

@MrESStranger There's a limited amount, I believe, but there's definitely enough to get through the game even if you waste some. You can restock quite a few by using pills, but using the pills leads to a worse ending, I think, and even the pills are limited. But if you use other methods when possible, you should be fine.

The thing I love about this is that neither is wholly right and neither is wholly wrong, so it is a much more interesting moral question, and thus is hard to pick a side. Still, I think I'm inclined to go with... er.... geez. I honestly don't know.

Great reviews! Personally, this is the best episode of the season, although the terrible bank security bothered me. @Kat Taylor @Jono81 First of all, the average quality of the stories has gone up immensely. The "filler" episodes, or the "duds" are still a good time. There aren't any Love and Monsters/Fear Her type situations.

Second of all, I don't feel the quality of his writing has gone down at all (season 5 is his best work, IMO) and he;s by far my favorite writer, so having a whole bunch of Moffat stories is a huge plus. And having no RTD stories is, I must say, a blessing for me; aside from Midnight and The Stolen Earth, I haven't adored any of his stories.

And then the story arcs are so much better now than they were before. And I love me some season arcs. Season 6's finale and Let's Kill Hitler were missteps, but everything else about his arcs are fantastic and keep me much more engaged throughout the season.

@Planet of the Deaf I'd honestly say TEH was scarier. the crack in the wall freaked me out a bit, though I wasn't sure why at the time. DB was more traditionally creepy and weird, but it didn't unsettle me the same way. Even the giant hot air balloon of human skin.

5 months ago on Face-Off: The Eleventh Hour vs Deep Breath

Reply

Deep Breath was great, don't get me wrong. But I didn't like how many references there were to older series. I like new Doctors having completely fresh starts; this was not. So TEH is better partially because it was a brand new Doctor, companion, and even world, to an extent. Also, it was better paced and was just more enjoyable, for whatever reason. Both were fantastic though!
