@TML__fan @lovemyleafers Agreed, but this is such a more complex issue it is out of scope for most fans. The +/- stat is the most useless, because it takes no factors into consideration.
In the Leafs case IMO, the defense corps transient nature, especially in the first half of the last season, was far more to blame than anything else.

@dlb eh @lovemyleafers It's obviously a very simple example, but my point is that the NHL is becoming dumb, and its trickling down to the fans now too and its so disappointing to see.
The stats show, and you can give this example over SO MANY different players, they show that fans think higher paid means more points means better.
If Bozak gets 40 points, oh well we're paying 4.2m. If he gets 60-70, we're laughing. The high paid guys HAVE to get 82+, or the contracts don't work out beneficial. End of story.
Since so many of the arguments against Bozak are simple minded, I present a simple minded argument FOR him:
Bozak cap hit: 4.2m. Bozak ppg last season: 0.61. Bozak $ per point: $83,966
Getzlaf cap hit: 8.25m. Getzlaf ppg last season: 1.11. $ per point: $90,639
Thornton cap hit: 7m. Thornton ppg last season: 0.83. $ per point: $102,439
Stastny cap hit 6.6m. Stastny ppg last season: 0.6. $ per point: $134,146
Is anyone saying Bozak is better than these guys, or one of the best centres in the league? No. But there's a crap ton of stat lovers out there right now. So I say to them, what do you say about this?
And better yet, what if he improves even further?
This #1 centre garbage is the dumbest thing in the world, and I honestly will never understand it. How come you never hear a winger say 'I'm a 1st line winger only!'

@Area49th I wanted 5yr/25m, even though that was a bit of a stretch on the market.
I was terrified of 7yr/42m.
7yr/37m is a little worse than middle ground, but FAR from the worst contract signed on Friday.

@DWCMLHS And I didn't mean direct offense to you of course, I was referring to hypothetical leaf haters.
@DWCMLHS The shooting percentage argument? Ugh, Bobby Ryan all over again. I remember this incorrect 'statistical analysis' for him back in 2008... yeah people were sure correct it was an outlier, it never hit 30 goals again. ... ...
He's getting better, anyone who watches hockey can see that. Talking heads love to say otherwise because they believe, my most hated term in the world, 'number 1 centres' grow on trees.
When Bozie gets 60 points this season, while others are crying its only because of Kessel or that 'it was just a fluke', I'll say I don't even care one bit, we're paying 4.2m for 60 points bitches.
@Bobsyouruncle @leafscapguru @NotInsane "And we already know that Bozak will never match Grabovski's offensive abilities."
Say what now? Bozak was on pace this season to be 8 points less than Grabo's best career total. People think giving up a superior faceoff man, better PK and 2 years younger, AND spending 1.3m more a year is worth 10 freakin' points?
Did someone get into Rob Ford's stash?
@Bobsyouruncle Difference is, IMO, and disagree if you want, but Bozak has clearly been trending up, is younger and much cheaper.
Don't get me wrong, loved Grabo's grit in the Boston series, but it got us nothing, and resulted in nothing but good grit. Bozie's breakaway SH was bigger and more influential than the entirety of what Grabo was able to bring to the table.
Good lord the Grabovski stuff is getting out of hand by WAY too many armchair opinions and illegitimate conjecture. How anyone believes Grabo is a better all-around player than Bozak is beyond me, and really since none of us have access to practice, and the idiot journos in this town who do (looking at you Mirtle) have no business talking hockey, makes most of these assumptions fruitless.
Does anyone really believe no one has tried Grabo with Kessel in practice? Seriously? They didn't work together, plain and simple. And I believe it. Grabo is a solid offensive guy, but he's one trick. You add two years older and a mil and half more, and it totally makes sense.
At least Alec touched upon Liles being tradeable and Grabo being not in any form. That buyout was ABSOLUTELY the correct decision in every sense of the word.
