@Jmessih  If we walk away with Virtanen I won't be disappointed. Wish he was a center though.

@Burtonboy  Probably won't see much action (if any). Spott wants to ice a veteran lineup and they have depth down the middle already.

@Belfour20/JB-45 @Walter_White  Took over in 06/07 in what was a really bad year for Philly, huge jump in the standings in 07/08 and a third round playoff appearance, another solid season in 08/09 (99 points) but lost in the 1st round, then fired after going 13-11-1 to start the 09/10 season. Went to LA as an interim coach for 4 games and has been an assistant there ever since, running the LA defense (apparently) and winning a cup. Not too shabby imo.

@peterbleafs @Walter_White @mike_84  I'm not saying I want Zidlicky, I just could see the logic. I know it was a small sample size, but I was really impressed by Granberg last night, and could see Nonis wanting to give him a shot. I'd rather we go in that direction, personally.

@peterbleafs @mike_84 @Walter_White  I think the locks on D for next season are Dion, Gardiner, Gleason and Rielly. Not sure what happens with Franson, Gunnar and Ranger. We need to make some changes.

@leafersutherland  I'm passed trying to assign too much blame to any one person. All of them from Nonis down are to blame equally in my mind (players included). Everyone dropped the ball. RC is the easy target though and I can't imagine a world with him as the 2014-2015 leafs coach.

@mike_84  I wonder if DeBoer ends up coaching in TO if they bring in Zidlicky on a 1 year deal. He's a righty who knows the DeBoer system. Yeah he's old (37) but I was impressed with his game every time I watched him this year.

@Bobsyouruncle @Walter_White  Agreed. I think a lot of our success will be dependent on if we can develop our bottom 6 prospects well, like Biggs, Broll, D'Amigo, Ashton, Gauthier and maybe even Carrick.

Trying to keep the Leafs current issues in perspective, here's where I think we are in the development curve.

Because we had basically ZERO talent when Burke took over, his main goal seemed to be to acquire skill/talent regardless of how each player fit. That's why he essentially had to throw out his idealism related to top 6 bottom 6, it just didn't work with the pieces he put together. And he did really well in my opinion at bringing in some very good pieces.

The problem that Nonis inherited is tricky. It's about identifying who fits and who doesn't. It's about chemistry and balance now, and putting together a well-rounded roster. That means tough decisions on players like Grabo, MacA, questions about Kadri, Lupul, Franson, etc. There are bound to be some bad moves and some good moves in the process, and much of what he will need to do will be very unpopular because we were starved for skill players and don't want to part with any of them.

This, however, is a much more attractive problem to have than the one Burke had, even tough (I think) it is more difficult in many ways and has a lot of subjectivity and room for error.

This is why I am convinced that in order to take the next (and most important) step we need to continue to do quick retools on the roster, with the goal of competing for the cup in 16/17. Guys like Franson, Lupul, Gunnarsson, Kulemin, Kadri (I would keep him), and Reimer need to be packaged in quantity for quality trades, with the remaining spots filled by up and coming Marlies like Holland, D'Amigo, Ashton, Leivo, Granberg(?), etc.

Nonis could be the guy to take us there, but I'm not fully convinced at this point, based on how some of his moves have played out. I also think he may be too gun-shy to make the bold moves needed to propel the team forward into contention.

Time will tell, I guess.

@Bruffins  I'll bite.

JVR - Tavares - Kessel (homer line)

Lucic - Carter - Simmonds (beast line)

Sobotka - Couturier - Brouwer (shutdown line)

Paille - Campbell - Thornton (best 4th line in the league)

Keith - Weber (easy)

Gardiner - Staal (Jake stays)

Rielly - Voynov (holy mobility)

Quick (sorry Bernier)

Lehner (sorry Reimer)

I really think John Stevens could help us. LA has a ridiculously solid defensive system and he seems to get a lot of credit for that...and I have a feeling Leiweke might strongly suggest Nonis considers hiring him (similar to how he strongly suggested Nonis trade for Bernier). Just a hunch. I've wondered why his name doesn't come up in the conversation more.

Thanks for the write up. One thing I see differently:

"You hear this as a Leafs fan and it just sends a shiver down your spine. To be so short-sighted to decide if there is a problem with this team based on two weeks is frightening. Judge the entire season."

I think what Leiweke was saying only once the season is over and he sees how the team responds to the current challenge will he be able to judge the whole season and make a determination on if there is a bigger problem. I think he was specifically waiting to see if the team quits or if they fight it out to the end. Quitting could signify some deeper issues than just being a young team on a natural development curve (which is what Nonis is preaching, I'm sure).

Just my $0.02...

@loomx @BBirde  We've gotten some great goaltending this year which has covered up much of the defensive shortcomings, but the fact is, Reimer has let in way too many save-able shots over the past 5 games when we've needed solid goaltending the most. The whole thing just sucks.
