@Yaknowwhat @TMLfan_15 Hopefully that's the case.  Outside of Mcdavid, its more important that the Leafs get a great return for their core, than worrying about the 4th to 7th slot.  That said, i'll take the 4th thank you.

Here's the challenge.  Leafs have to really suck in order to at least secure the 4th worse slot in the standings.  In order to really suck, there most tradeable assets have to continue to be brutal, which devalues them even further. What you get for those assets will go a long way to determining how fast or successful a re-build this will be.

If im the nhl, after watcing the debacle that the Sabres and Coyotes are engaged in, i'm sure they would be more than happy with the "Leafs" winning the lottery. The league im sure is pretty embarassed. Let me throw this out there, the leafs bleed out Lupal, Bozak, and Phaneufs contract. Suddenly they have a ton of cap space to take care of a couple of the distressed teals that have to unload quqlity players. Are whatever they pick up this summer those 3, plus raping cap hamstrung teams, plus what is hopefully a great draft for a number 1 center, plus Reilly, kadri, nylander, kessel and a few of the marlies pups enough to get this turned around in 3 years?

@Sebastian James he 100 per cent has to go.  This team has massively under-achieved.  It has a serious leadership void.  melt down after melt down, salute-gate, an unwillingness to take responsibilty. Not to mention the complete lack of hockey IQ for what is supposed to be your highest paid, top defenseman. if we don't get rid of these guys, every young player brought in will follow in the footsteps

@StanSmith @TorontoMapleLeafsOur D is a joke. Polak should play 10 minutes a game.  Franson better not get a ridiculous contract from the Leafs, let him get 5 or 6 million from someone else thank you.  Dion absolutely has to go.  Percy should be in the line up.

@Bruffins @TMLfan_15 @Ian from Etobicoke @darthNihilus Almost every guy on this site can give a list in a second.  There are teams in the league that have 4 defenseman on their roster that all rank higher than Dion. Come on.

@StanSmith Re-invent himself.  This guy has been in the league for how long?  Seriously?  You cant have a guy getting 7 million for 7 years with a C on his sweater "re-inventing himself by finally learning how to play defensive hockey.  That's nutty

@Ian from Etobicoke @darthNihilus Top 30?  Seriously?  The guy is no where close to being top 30.  I wish that wasn't the case, trust me.  But I'm done over rating our players.  That mentality is why we are always mediocre to bad.  If he was paid 3.5 to 4 for 3 or 4 years I could live with him.  Otherwise, we need a "Bargnani trade" desperately.

Reply

@TorontoMapleLeafs @TMLfan_15 @darthNihilus no Dion hate going on. Its what I see.  Look, we've all seen Dion get punked how many times on the ice where not even one guy is interested in getting his back.  He is slow, makes bad decisions, still after 10 years in the league has brutal positioning  He often picks up the wrong guy, or just stands there like a stump screening the goalie and marking no one.  If you want to talk about what I hear, yes its hearsay, but none of it is good.  He's a goof.

@darthNihilus When you watch Dion live and get to see the whole ice, you really understand that he is an absolute meathead!  He has no clue out there.  No hockey IQ - period.  His team-mates hate him, the room is a mess. That faster we get out from under the contract the better.

I don't think the Leafs should trade for anyone's headaches or bad contracts unless we are unloading a brutal contract.  If the deal doesn't include moving Phaneuf (which would have to include a significant other piece from the Leafs end), then forget it.  The last thing the Leafs need is to gamble on O'reilly and get stuck with another brutal deal for a player who you aren't sure has the right character to be a building block.  Only if Phaneuf is part of the deal, you go for it.

@LyGuy @TMLfan_15 I like kadri.  He was OK last night.  I've seen him have better games in Ottawa, but he clearly feels comfortable with the puck on his stick.  If they get him at a good price he can be a long time productive Leaf.

One other thing, I know there is allot of Love for JVR on this site, but I would use him as the main piece to take a run at a Number 1 Center.  His work ethic is not great, he's big for nothing.

Went to the game last might.  The obvious : a bad start masked what was a pretty dominant Leafs performance for 2 periods.  Flip the Goalies and the Leafs win by 3 goals.  My 2 cents : Morgan Reilly was very good.  Jake Gardiner made allot of mistakes, but he was on the ice a ton.  They didn't shelter him.  Polak was brutal.  He should play PK and 10 minutes a night max.  Franson was just ok.  A brutal pinch in first period that cost the team a goal. I worry about handing out another big contract to a mediocre defenceman.  I'm not saying this to get into the whole bash fest on Dion Phaneuf, but he is an absolute stump.  Over and above the obvious lack of leadership ability required to wear the C in the Toronto market, he is Dumb and slow.  His hockey IQ is brutal.  Do whatever it takes to get out from under that contract.  Please spare me the who is going to play the minutes arguement.  Santorelli a beast.  Clarkson was really good.  The only guy consistently paying the price in front of the net.  Kessel was good.  Battled harder than usual.  Desperately needs a Number 1 Center.

i've been a huge Kessel supporter and haven't previously given any thought to the Leafs trading him, but i wonder if we have to start giving serious thought to whether you can build a team around him.  he's gifted, no doubt, but if we can use him to rape a desperate team at the deadline, bring it on.  its just time.

Its time for Reimer to move on.  And its time for some fans to stop their love affair with every single Leaf player on the roster. Reimer isn't good enough to be a number one  he has a huge heart, but his glove and rebound control are way below average.  We drafted 8th overall, this group wasn't good enough.  Change is 100 percent necessary.

@4evrblue @TMLfan_15@Lescott I respect your opinion, i just mostly disagree.  yes he plays hard and has physical gifts, but Phaneuf was brutal in a good chunk of the play-off series last year, and made horrible decisions under pressure.  Many of Phaneuf's mistakes aren't physical, they are mental.  Injured or not, he makes bad decisions.  He is the Captain and makes big money.  He is the leader of this team.  I just don't believe they will move forward.
