Anybody have a rough estimate of how much cap space we have if you factor in our RFAs signing?

@Anthony Petrielli @vji67 Haha true. It'll be a shame if we're getting severely outplayed but winning and mgmt sees nothing wrong...again :-/

@Anthony Petrielli In your mind is Carlyle still the "x-factor" here? If his systems don't change do we actually improve with these (or any) roster changes?

@Pent_House - thanks for the write-up! Based on the rest of the AHL landscape, do you think the Marlies have pose a serious threat to win the Calder Cup this year? Or are there some other AHL teams in a better position for w/e reason (goaltending, defense, offense, etc)?

@loomx  The Kadri trade talk is especially crazy considering he's 23 and this is only his 2nd full season in the NHL. The kid is already pacing for 55 points and hasn't even hit his prime as a player yet. Trading him only makes sense if another team is willing to part with someone as young, talented and promising...which won't happen.

@sniperstar @CanuckUKinToronto @ingy56 @Mind Bomb  Idk about your sources, but this makes the most sense. There's no way we offered a better deal given our cap situation. We were likely sending cash back which they probably didn't want.

If there was no salary cap, would the Leafs be a consistent Cup contender year in and year out?

@Alec Brownscombe @traNsplantEdneWfie  I'm not opposed to moving Gardiner if it fills a pressing need, but what scares me is that he has that tantalizing potential to become something way better than the return we might get at his current value (which I bet is not as high as the Leafs like since he hasn't looked that great this season).

@CanuckUKinToronto @vji67 @Bruffins  Yea, I'm honestly not crazy about Malkin but the guy has been a 1.23 PPG player over his whole career so far (506 games) which is definitely...something. At the same time, I get the impression that he's injury prone (could be wrong) while Kessel has been as steady as they come health wise (knock on wood, really hope I didn't just jinx that).

And I agree about Getzlaf too. But he (like Malkin) is a huge #1 Center. Unfortunately, those don't grow on trees. If you pick him up, can you deal Kadri/Bozak for another #1 winger to replace Kessel? Idk...

Reply

@MaxwellHowe @vji67 @Bruffins  I might take Tavares (although I'm not sure how serious his injury is) only because he's 23 and already a PPG player. Who knows what he'll be like in his "prime" in 2-3 years.

@Bruffins  Sidney Crosby. Jk.

It would have to be for a forward, b/c even a d-man like Karlsson can't replace Kessel's production. Sooo...

Giroux - I think Philly would have to sweeten the deal
Stamkos
Malkin
Toews - we might have to sweeten the deal, but not by much
Getzlaf

W/e it is, it's a really short list.

@Tommy Cat @Mind Bomb @vji67 @Alec Brownscombe @Bobsyouruncle @Greg Fenton  It was a while ago and I don't want to be accused of putting words in people's mouths, but....the message at the time sounded like these boards were being taken over on a daily basis by the same tired argument. Since it was happening consistently no matter how much people tried to move away from it or rationally argue against it, there was a ban threatened. Again, big "if i recall correctly" disclaimer to that. I can be totally wrong and not be remembering things correctly (or misinterpreting them).

All of that said, I'm not saying anyone should be banned for their contrarian opinion. Just thought this topic was over and done with it.

@CanuckUKinToronto @vji67  I see. I was more looking at when the majority of our wins have happened. And it seems like it's been through 2 really good hot streaks. That's not bad and I'm not complaining, but it'd be nice to see them consistently win 3 out of every 5 (give or take a win/loss) throughout the 82 game season. I think that's what separates elite teams in the league from the rest and ideally we'll get there soon :)

5 months, 3 weeks ago on Decisions facing Carlyle in the Leafs bottom six

Reply

@CanuckUKinToronto  I thought things are a little more alarming actually (as far as consistency goes). We exploded with a hot start and went 11-5-0 (if i remember correctly). Add our recent 9-1-1 streak and our record through two really hot stretches of play is 20-6-1. In the 30 games in between we went 10-15-5. So....idk if the Leafs have been consistent at all this year :-/
