I literally developed a tension migraine as I read through this. Jesus. We're such a mess. And by "we" I mean the media's treatment of the team.
Ahh, ok. I guess that might work, but is Freddy that good even at the AHL level?

No offense, but in what world is Gauthier a 1C?
@Nylanderthal not sure they have anywhere close to that kind of cap space...

@GibsonLPStudio @vji67 Isn't Sekera a UFA? I think Franson is better but I could be wrong.
We should have held onto Franson. We could have potentially gotten a 1st from a playoff bubble team instead of the #1 team in the league.
@nrandreycharles If they got LA's first I'll be so pissed.
@Baddestcat Sure, that changes a lot of stuff, but there's a >90% that we don't get him. So we should make "Plan A" revolve around not getting McDavid.
1 month ago on Friedman, Lebrun, Kypreos on Joffrey Lupul rumours
@BPsotka @vji67 Idk. I'm kind of tired of the idea of quick fixes. I think we've taken that route year after year after year. I'm not sure the Buff/Edm route is the best solution but I seriously don't see any way to turn the current Leafs into a TRUE cup contending team with one year of tanking where we get only 1 high draft pick.
@BPsotka @vji67 In which case Kessel suffers and his trade value absolutely tanks after another year or two of this style. If we're adopting an extremely tight, low event playing style then I don't think Kessel ever gets back to his ppg pace. Better to move him sooner than later in that case.
My problem with not trading Kessel is that him + good goaltending can singlehandedly drag us out of the bottom 5 and into the bottom 14. If we're not getting high draft picks for our "rebuild" then I'm not sure the rebuild goes anywhere substantial and we might never escape playoff bubble mediocrity.
@17Forever @Xxxxxnew His first year on the team they finished 2nd to last (iirc)...so they were pretty shitty.

@Jay31 @vji67 If I did that in the streets of Chicago they'd wonder wtf I was smoking. Plus they're a bunch of bandwagoners so hockey doesn't exist until the Hawks are in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
@17Forever @vji67 @zombie27 @Mcost61 Good point about the media. They're legitimately one of the Leafs' worst enemies. Wish there was some way to mitigate their bullshit.
@hometeem @vji67 I know! Who do we have to bribe to make this happen??
@17Forever @vji67 lol
@17Forever @zombie27 @Mcost61 @vji67 Crosby joined a shit Pens team as soon as he was drafted. I think these kind of generational/historic talents can mask a lot of problems and accelerate the rebuild process.
@traNsplantEdneWfie @vji67 That's actually a pretty cool idea!
@Reether @vji67 Pretty much. Sad that we literally need a miracle to feel better at this point :(
@Mcost61 @zombie27 @vji67 Hahahaha that's great :D
@17Forever @vji67 An epic 1-yr long bender? Sounds fantastic!
@GLG @vji67 Yea, definitely not ashamed to say there might be some...manly tears shed.
What's the first thing everyone's doing if we win the McJesus lottery?
@Mind Bomb @vji67 @Xxxxxnew If he finishes at >0.5ppg for the rest of the season, should we be pretty excited?
@Xxxxxnew I'm not saying we should bring him up, just curious about how he's doing so far (outside of the pts stats).
Anyone tracking Nylander in the AHL so far? 6 pts in 10 games for an 18 yr old in a men's pro league isn't too bad, right?
With Lupul's comments below and Polak's comments previously, I seriously don't see how/why any "vet" would want to stick around for a rebuild with Toronto. We keep assuming these guys will stay and be good "role models" for the young players, but I think we're skipping over the part where they might not actually want to stay.
@KingTon @vji67 Honestly, as much as I hate the Sens, seeing a Canadian team (other than Toronto) get McDavid is better than seeing him go to an American team. Maybe if he went to Florida or some other small market US team it won't be so bad.
@TheLoovTrain @vji67 It'd be total BS if LA won, but I think Boston is the only one that would genuinely feel painful. Boston reeks of douche-baggery from top to bottom as an organization and for them to "luck" out into a potentially historical talent is just f*cking insane.
@FrycersGhost As "shady" and "immoral" as that might be, I don't know any other fanbase that deserves a huge win (in general) as much as us. So I fully endorse it if that's the case. I'm tired of being the butt of every joke and having such horrible, false hope at the beginning of every year only to slowly realize we're once again one of the worst teams in the league. Ugh. It's depressing.
If the Bruins miss the playoffs and win the lottery for McDavid...I might give up on hockey for the next decade :(
@FrycersGhost If people hesitate to give us 2015 1sts for Kessel, Phaneuf, JVR, etc then ask for 2016 1sts.
@DylanJ Seriously. The more I read, the more I think we need to do everything to try and get him (assuming McDavid/Eichel are out of the question this year). Load up on 2016 1st round picks from teams that won't make the playoffs and hope that you win the lottery with your own or someone else's pick.
@deedrag @vji67 I'm saying that if you can't get McDavid or Eichel, then you should go in on Matthews big time. He's also considered a generational talent and would not be a bad consolation prize at all.
According to Button, Matthews is good enough to be in the same conversation as Eichel/McDavid. If we lose out on those 2 this year, then I hope Shanahan does everything possible to tank like crazy next year. The Draft Lottery will change, but we'd still have the best shot in 30th place.
@LN-093 @vji67 No, I know the story. Getz's original comments sounded whiny and petulant (especially from a Cup & Medal "winner"). Ovi is annoying but he's a jokester hence the bald dig. Pointing out how much more your teams have won is just petty at this point.
1 month, 1 week ago on Game 58 Scoring Chances: Panthers 3 vs. Maple Leafs 2
@LN-093 If this is real, Getz is a dick. There's kidding around and then there's being a sore winner.
@udlbu @Jay31 He might also just mean that *this year* Ovi is better than Crosby/Malkin. Not sure I agree, but players have ups and downs so who knows.
@udlbu @vji67 Yea, it would definitely be intriguing to see what happens with Kessel if we get McDavid. It does change things and I'd definitely be amenable to either keeping Kessel or trading him. The return would (hopefully) be large enough that we could provide McDavid with a budding superstar on the wing so that they can grow together and be a top duo for years and years. On the other hand, I can see how Kessel would help McDavid if he stayed in Toronto.
@Omac13 Ok, but winning/losing is a team outcome. If people want to attack one guy for his performance when he's *just* as consistent as the other top producers in the league then that's what's simply wrong and what I'm trying to point out. Again, this is a horrible year and Kessel is worse than we've seen him so it's a different matter today. I just remember huge fights--err "discussions"--in the past years about how consistent Kessel is compared to Kane, Stamkos, Ovi, etc. Clearly they're all inconsistent and all experience slumps.
@Omac13 I kind of diasgree though. I don't think McDavid can single-handedly turn this team around from bottom 5 to top 16. Leafs aren't as horrible as they're playing right now, but they're not that good to begin with. We would still have major problems with our entire d, our top 9 (outside of Kessel, JVR, Kadri & McDavid), and even our goaltending (assuming they're still mediocre). McDavid is a huge, HUGE piece, but the overall puzzle is still a mess.
@Alec Brownscombe Do you have the numbers for something like this on hand? If we assume this is a down year for him, I'd be curious to see how he stacks up in the last 3 years when he was at a ppg pace.
@Xxxxxnew @vji67 This isn't my work btw. Came from a Pens writer here: http://blogs.post-gazette.com/sports/2013-06-20-18-51-15/empty-netters/43624-missing-the-point-02-16-15
@Reether @vji67 This year it's probably bad since the whole team has been horrendous. In the past few years, he's probably in the same area as these guys. The idea of scoring consistently is bullshit and one of the most absurd criticisms that comes up repeatedly for Kessel.
@udlbu @Cameron19 I'm not sure anyone is knocking Polak down a notch so much as saying he's no more than a 5/6 d-man. The appreciation, although fine, is what makes it sound like he's a Top 4 guy who needs to be kept for years and years.
Oh, fun fact for all of the anti-Kessels out there:"Sidney Crosby has 58 points in 53 games, but he was held pointless in 23 of them." Also, this:
@.Kong. @vji67 @vinoa @Reether And he's played with Kessel the entire year except for the last few games? Once again, Kessel is elevating his teammates not the other way around. I'm not saying JVR can't do 30 goals on his own, but I don't think he gets there without at least one pretty good player on his line. Kessel could probably hit 30 goals and 60 points with almost anyone in the NHL.
@DeclanK @vji67 @Xxxxxnew @Jay31 Exactly.
@TorontoMapleLeafs @udlbu Guys--Polak is 29 this year and will be 34-35 by the time the Leafs can theoretically contend. Even if we want to to keep him, what reason does he have to stay? Other than massively overpaying the guy, I can't imagine someone (as competitive, hard-working, tough, etc) like Polak would want to stay here and miss out on competing for a cup somewhere else as he gets older. Players have a say in this stuff too, right?
