@WB_222 @vji67 @Jay_Berg And because he was coming off a major injury and viewed as near-dead weight for taking up 4.25M in cap space. He got Gardiner b/c he took the Lupul contract. Lupul wasn't the target.

@Jay_Berg I never said Burke was a genius, but to deny that stockpiling young assets by taking advantage of the Leafs' (or any team he's the GM of) cap space is a shrewd move would be ignorant. Our youth "cupboard" was a barren wasteland when he came in and this tactic is one of the ways he helped stock it. That was literally the sole purpose of the Gardiner/Lupul trade. Lupul was initially seen as a contract dump so Anaheim added a first round pick to the deal.

@WB_222 @Jay_Berg it's a Burke thing to do (which is smart)--provide cap relief to a team at the cost of young assets. I'm sure LA would like to have more cap space around the trade deadline so they might be willing to give up a decent pick/prospect to get rid of the Voynov contract. Only problem is that I don't think the Leafs have that much cap space to do something like that.

@HHT @vji67 @Anthony Petrielli Isn't that selling low on our part? It'd have to be Ritchie++, right? Would they part with Lindholm? He's 21 and eating up 20+ mins on the Ducks. Seems like a good piece to grab if we think we can start to contend in about 3-4 years.

@Anthony Petrielli i think i saw you mention that Anaheim has the cap space for Kessel. What do you think we could realistically get in return from a trade with them?

in theory, wouldn't a team interested in Kessel (assuming they're a cup contender and see Kessel as the piece that puts them over the top) be more desperate and potentially pay a higher price pre-trade deadline?

@Yaknowwhat @LN-093 but a team that thinks they're a contender might not need him to do anything but score. if that's the case and they think he could really put them over the top then they'd probably be willing to pay a hefty price.

@DeclanK @Mitch_S2 Also, another Insider article has scouts discussing Pronman's list. Here's what they say about Nylander:

-----------------

Let’s start right at the top. I was driving back from Columbus when I got a call from one scout who had a minute to help dissect the list. Without the ability to forward over the entire list, I pulled into a Bob Evans parking lot and started reading it to him over the phone.

No. 1, William Nylander.

Before, going any farther, I stopped. Is he the best prospect currently not playing in the NHL?

“No,” the scout said.

And we’re off!

“He is a dynamite player, though. He does have the potential to be the best player who is not in the NHL right now. That would be the fair thing for me to say,” the scout said. “I think for him to get back to North America is good, but there’s not going to be a lot of acclimating to the small rink because he grew up with the small rink. He grew up playing hockey in Chicago. He just needs to get physically stronger.”

After thinking about it a few minutes, the scout seemed to soften on his original stance.

“He can be No. 1 on this list -- I’m okay with that,” he said. “He’s a dynamite skater. The difference between him and Reinhart is he’s a much better skater than Reinhart.”

An Eastern Conference scout had the same initial reaction with Nylander at No. 1. He wouldn’t name Nylander hockey’s top prospect, and at a minimum prefers Reinhart over the talented Swede. Maybe Nikolaj Ehlers, too.

“Nylander is a flashy guy, great skater, great skill,” he said. “Reinhart is more an all-round, reliable player in all situations. The thing that hurts Sam is he’s not a great skater like Nylander, who can dance by anybody at any time. Reinhart is a thinker, great passer, does great things on the ice.”

This scout suggested he’d even prefer to have a guy like Dylan Larkin (No. 16) in the organization instead of Nylander. Larkin was a guy who was mentioned multiple times as somebody too far down the list.

“I thought he was the best U.S. player by far [at the WJC]. I know he doesn’t have the same flash as Nylander, I just think you win with players like that,” said the scout. “Nylander gets his point, every time he plays in his age group, he’s one of the top scorers, if not the top scorer but he loads up against lousy teams.”

@Anthony Petrielli I love, love, LOVE Kessel. Always will. But...where there's smoke, there has to be some kind of fire. If person after person has come out and said the guy has some attitude issues, then maybe the guy has attitude issues. I personally don't think any less of him and I would still love to see him in a Leafs jersey until he retires.

That said, I would also love to see the Leafs win a cup more than anything. If the team is better off in the long term without Kessel for whatever reason then so be it.

@Xxxxxnew Last year the best regular season team (Boston) won 66% of their games. I doubt heart surgery has an expected failure of 34%. My "job" question might have been broad but heart surgery is not in the same universe of hockey as far as "jobs" go.

My original point (plainly stated) is that these are athletes and calling for their head after 2 losses in an 82 game season is beyond idiotic and irrational.

@Mcost61 @vji67 @Xxxxxnew What does that even mean? You do realize that every team is made up of these pros "who know damn well what they need to do to win", yet no team finishes the year 82-0, right?

@Mcost61 @vji67 Agreed and that's why I thought Carlyle should have been fired during the summer. "Doing the same thing" in this instance is his system regardless of how much he/the staff claims it's changed.

@Xxxxxnew The sample size these players are responsible for is 2 games. If you started a new job somewhere and your first 2 days were rough for whatever reason, would it make sense for you to be fired?

@loomx  The Kadri trade talk is especially crazy considering he's 23 and this is only his 2nd full season in the NHL. The kid is already pacing for 55 points and hasn't even hit his prime as a player yet. Trading him only makes sense if another team is willing to part with someone as young, talented and promising...which won't happen.
