I'd replace 'character' with 'playing physical and all around being difficult to play against'. The Leafs lack it for sure and the problem is at the top of the lineup not the bottom.

@Kessel81 @Sebastian James
Ottawa traded him to keep Havlat (salary cap issue). Then Atlanta sucked horribly so they traded him. Then he became a free agent I believe and chose his own destiny.

I find it hard to believe Watters when he says Nonis signed Phaneuf for 7 years then 3 months later tried to trade him. Maybe they did at the draft but certainly not when the Leafs were in a playoff spot.

by far the worst player on that line?
@Radar O'Rielly @Burn_the_Loov_Boats
My question is why can't Percy develop in the AHL. Is playing in the NHL superior to his development? If you think so, then tell me why. I"m not prognosticating lines or putting Percy down.

I'm not defending anyone.
Detroit doesn't call up players until they are ready. That seems wise.
can't he develop in the AHL?
At my favourite bar in Kingston, the Habs fans are having a lot more fun these days. No one seems to care how good they really are so long as they keep winning.

I think the smart money is not to pick-up Richards. The morning after he clears waivers, LA will pay you to take him.
Are you referring to re-entry waivers? Those were eliminated.
they're winning this year and they went to the SCF last year and three years before that. What have the Leafs done?
Schenn reminds me of Luke Richardson. He was alright but never what he was projected to be.
I think this is step 1 in moving Richards.
MR clears waivers.
No team takes him.
This confirms that he has negative value on his contract. Teams need to be compensated to take him off LA's hands.
I don't see him being claimed.
I suspect one of the above will be gone by end of the day March 2nd
I purposefully missed the NHL Allstar weekend ... gonna keep it that way ;)

they eliminated re-entry waivers, dude
not straight up... I hope.

It's easy to get full value for Franson. There aren't many top 4 defenders available at the trade deadline. I can smell those successful playoff team's desperation from here! :)

That scares me more than anything.
Possibly. Phaneuf scares me most. But the draft is the most likely time to trade a big-salary player like those two. So let's wait and see.
Leafs can lose with these guys. Why does sending them out of town for nothing improve us?
It could take two years to move Phaneuf and Kessel for maximum value. There's no need to make rash decisions.
The Leafs have many on-ice problems. One of which is lack of elite talent. Acquiring elite talent is going to take years so sit back and enjoy the ride! As long as Shanahan doesn't ruin it by trading young players and picks for older players then the Leafs are on the right track.
Because he's smart. It wasn't clear what the problem was in the Summer. And he just started the job without any prior experience.
Why? He's been here eight months.
Yes that's probably true. Its taken a long time to identify the problem in Leafs Land.
I think the Leafs have some good (not great) players and a better farm system today than in 2009. Its not all doom n gloom... unless you had your heart set on making the playoffs this year.
Time to mov'em!
Its never as bad or as good as the MSM tells us. They are entertainers first and foremost.
The probability of a second round pick becoming an NHL hockey player is somewhere around 10% (less?). It might be frustrating not having a second round pick but its hardly the problem.

If MLSE just handed out waffles at games then maybe Leafs fans would keep their shirts on. Until then... you sowed the wind. ... now reap the whirlwind!
Not a chance Calgary makes that trade.
Very true but drafting for position is a mug's game.
He's much stronger than Kaberle and a better skater.
wooww wooowww wooooww Doughty was already Doughty at 19. Rielly is no Doughty.
I see many more losses in the Leafs future.
Its a good draft year. Better to pick 5 than 11.
@Conis @Mcost61 @Airfreshener
The article says two jersey tossers were charged. It doesn't imply they were charged for throwing the jerseys. Could be for other reasons.
Great post - that's the "can-do" spirit that made this country great.
@hometeem @mcloki @B_Leaf
Wingers are the easiest to replace AND least important position in the NHL today. You build around centers and defence: not wingers.

Burke thought FA would be more useful than it was. He's no longer using the same strategy he applied here.
that is a very flattering interpretation
Nonis is an idiot. But saying Burke should be here because Nonis is dumb.... is no argument at all. Burke brought in Nonis and all the assistants people despised so much. What does that tell us about Burke's judgment?
He made serious strategic errors. Some of his tactical moves were smart, others not so much (FA signings).
The mess where Phaneuf and Kessel are our best players. Where we traded for a 22-year-old Kessel instead of drafting an 18 year old.
Its getting more and more obvious by the day we have to rebuild. Burke tried to rush the job. Now he's in Calgary doing it right. He learned from his mistakes... although that is no solace for the Leafs.
His draft picks were not great either.
He got us into this mess in the first place!
@Bring the Cup Home
" sad to say i think we are in the middle of the darkest ages of leafs history."
Don't say that to those that remember the Ballard years.
