@The_Polish_Cannon If he plays RW on the 2nd line. But it looks like Chiasson will be 2RW. Zibanejad probably slots in as the 3C which is no good.

Still gotta give Kontiola some time. Hasn't played in North American since 2009. fyi, his waiver eligibility kicks in once he plays 48 games.

Well, let's be honest, the first 3 months of hockey has proven to be pretty meaningless for the Leafs.

Kinda hope the team gets crushed in the pre-season. Always hate hearing all the false positivity that comes from a good pre-season. It's all meaningless.

Great article. Was thinking about the benefit to Clarkson before you mentioned it. Clarkson is actually a decent possession player and would benefit much more if his linemates could control the puck. For Clarkson to at least come close to living up to his contract, he has to mesh on that 2nd line.

But it's tough for me to look at that top line and be content. Putting Lupul back up there and you're looking at the exact same thing we saw the last time they were together. A rush line with high GF but also an absurd GAon. Is that really the ideal situation? If anything, it's further proof that this team NEEDS 4 balanced lines that can play. 1st line is a rush line, 2nd line is a possession line, 3rd and 4th need to bring a different element(crash and bang, possession and whatnot) but also be able to score. With Booth, Holland, Kontiola, Santorelli, Komarov, Kontiola, and Frattin, you can absolutely do that. Is having a strictly rush 1st line ideal going forward though? I don't think so.

@Alec Brownscombe Now that's one of the things that most annoyed me about some posters here when it came to many good debates and viewpoints by some MSM guys. Many just instantly attack the person writing/creating the content and not the content they are presenting.

@Cameron19 Really Burke could've pried Giordano out of Calgary when he was playing like crap last year. Would've made a great first pairing.

22 hours, 12 minutes ago on 10 Questions: Part 2 — Will Stephane Robidas and Roman Polak improve the defence?

@TheLoovTrain @loomx I'd have to discuss that with David. I know there were some articles comparing the QoC of Phaneuf with other top Dmen to show that there's really wasn't much difference, at least not enough to be considered significant, and that's true. When the numbers are really close, you can't just pick the guy withe the higher number and say he played against tougher competition. Same with faceoff%. There's not much difference between a 50% faceoff guy and a 48% faceoff guy. You have to look at the extremes and the abnormalities though. Phaneuf and Gunnarsson's RelQoC(meaning their QoC compared to teammates) were so off the charts compared to the other Dmen. Same with Grabovski. You can ask the question "well why didn't he produce in the shortened season". Then you look at his offensive zone starts and QoC and see that they were way too low and high(respectively) and conclude that "well, maybe he's not fit for that role and needs more offensive assignments.

You have to expect that your top pairing guys are goign to play the toughest competition on the team. But there needs to be a balance throughout the D corps before concluding whether Phaneuf is a good top pairing Dman.

22 hours, 21 minutes ago on 10 Questions: Part 2 — Will Stephane Robidas and Roman Polak improve the defence?

Reply

@Cameron19 @loomx Yep. We don't know if he can be a #1D because he's in a much worse situation than "normal" #1Ds. Even Suter's RelQoC is not nearly as high as Phaneuf's. He plays a lot of minutes, but they also have some underrated guys that they can rely on like Brodin, Scandella, and Spurgeon. They also have a coach that isn't Carlyle(but I don't want to turn it into that debate with some other posters again)

@Bon Scott was a Leaf fan @The_Polish_Cannon But you have to acknowledge that the admins here are way more lenient than any. Off-topic discussion is perfectly fine. No other hockey site will let you share music or talk about Annunaki. They're just leaving that to the mashups.

It's(from where I'm standing) the constant bickering about how "difficult" it is to find out where to post and the complaining when posts get removed on non-mashup articles. And when people keep doing that, that's what gets the admins annoyed.(I think)

@TheLoovTrain @loomx Yeah. Instead of Dion getting thrown out there every single time Ovechkin or Tavares get on the ice, maybe you let Rielly and Robidas(assuming they work out here) handle some of those the minutes. Hell, even Polak sometimes. Last year, you didn't have that second pairing. And you'd have to assume that if Dion sees a little bit less of the top players every game, he'd be able to get more offensive zone starts, increasing his corsi, and thus kickstarting his offense again.

k I'm just going to ignore all this nonsense that is going on.

I've seen some people talking about Phaneuf's poor numbers. Now that many of you understand the stats a bit better, I think it'll be a bit easier to explain the pro-Dion side. I don't think many Phaneuf supporters on here or anywhere else are really Phaneuf "fans". People would often point out during the season how bad Phaneuf was, which was usually met with "yeah, but he plays the toughest minutes in the league." I think people took that in a way that was justifying him being a top Dman in the league. The real issue is that he shouldn't have to play those minutes in the first place. It doesn't mean he can't be a #1D and it certainly doesn't mean he should be traded. I think mostly "pro-stats" people were showing Phaneuf's value through QoC as a response to people wanting him traded or to let him walk, because there really was nobody to replace him.

Maybe he really can't be a 1st pairing Dman on a successful team. But the main point was that you really can't replace him because he clearly didn't(and maybe still doesn't) have the supporting cast that allows him to play a more comfortable game. The goal should be to get people who can play tough minutes to lower Phaneuf's QoC which would hopefully make him more effective in both zones. Hopefully Robidas can bring that and to a smaller degree Polak all the while increasing the workload of guys who defend by having the puck all the time in Gardiner and Rielly.

@ingy56 @loomx @drummond No sense bringing on a 35 year old who's almost done when you have Holzer just waiting there. Holzer stayin up means Granberg plays more minutes in the A. It's not like you're handing him a top 6 D spot.

@ingy56 @loomx Have to be over 20 by December 31st of that year(so 2013). Over 4 years in the CHL or over 20 before December 31st of that year means you qualify as an overager. Last year, he completed only 3 years and was 19.

At least that's what I get from here:

fyi, Bibeau can play in the AHL or be sent back to Val D'Or as an overager unless my info is incorrect. The latter would probably be the better option.

@HeatherRickAkin On the flip side, things will get better when the team stops thinking that the biggest and baddest players are the ones that make up an excellent shutdown pair.

@drummond @loomx If we didn't have Holzer, I wouldn't mind. Better having him as a 7th D than Granberg. But with a 26 year old Holzer, it's time for him to get his shot.

Holzer's the kind of guy that should be up with the team until he loses a spot. Unlike Granberg, playing him top line minutes on the Marlies won't do him much good anymore so it won't matter if he's in the press box for more than a few games waiting for an injury or trade to give him chance.. Don't sign Tallinder, give Holzer a chance. If Robidas isn't ready for the start of the season, play him.

Dion-Polak(ugh)
Gardiner-Franson
Rielly-Holzer

@Henrik Tallinder People usually pass on Evander Kane. Should be a good 5th-6th round pick for your pool. Kyle Okposo is rated 97th on yahoo. Vrbata, Tarasenko, Heatley(if he plays with Getz and Perry), Parenteau, Galchenyuk, Reilly Smith.

@Waiting4LSC I want to see a lot of competition for spots. I make lines based on who I think will be better but hey, if someone like Troy Bodie comes in and plays great whereas Kontiola or Frattin or Ashton play poorly, give the job to Bodie and let the other three fight for that spot back.

Frattin/Ashton

Don't know why people are trying to throw it back into someone's face that they ranked Bibeau outside of their top 20. He's really only had 24 solid games in his career, other than that he's been below average. Leafs fans overrating a player based on a great short stint? no way.
