@Luke_R @loomx Hanifin, Strome, Marner.

That said, please stop winning. Dropping to 6th because of the lottery and missing out on all three of those guys would be devastating.

No love for Hanifin.
I think people are taking the comparison to J-Bo too seriously. The guy is seriously good. Put up crazy good numbers in college as a freshman. If he'd have been playing in the CHL, he'd be getting a lot more hype right now. Draft him, Strome, or Marner and I'm a happy camper.

@Cameron19 @loomx Yeah there'd definitely be more in the deal going Edmonton's way though. I'd be looking everywhere for a long-term solution in net(even though defense is the main issue). I could see them robbing the Leafs of Bernier if he's made available.
That said, Noah Hanifin really is the player they should be aiming for if they end up outside of the top 2. Having Nurse, Klefbom, and Hanifin would be a great start and cover up for the mistake of taking Yakupov over Murray.

@Cameron19 @loomx Sorry, Malcolm Subban.
11 hours, 18 minutes ago on GDT: Game 77, Tampa Bay Lightning at Toronto Maple Leafs (7:30pm, TSN4)
@Cameron19 If they can complete that rumoured trade involving Eberle and (Malcolm) Subban, they'd be well on their way.

@Yaknowwhat Marner has been playing great at centre in the playoffs too. And he's better defensively. So it's really a tough decision to make.
The Leafs need all 3 so I'll be happy with whoever.
1 day, 17 hours ago on Monday Mashup: Connor Brown has 4pt game, Nylander adds goal+assist in Marlies win over Rochester
@CherryPicking Most NHL teams have those types of prospects and then some. Having Nylander, Brown, and maybe Johnson is good, but at this point, the rest of our prospects project to be bottom 6 energy guys at best.
I keep expecting a small winning streak, but right now the Leafs are guaranteed a top 8 pick in the draft even if they win 8 straight. 2 more regulation losses and they're guaranteed a top 5 pick(pre-lottery).

Was at the game. Can confirm: The Leafs suck.
1 week ago on GDT: Game #74, Minnesota Wild at Toronto Maple Leafs (7:30 p.m., TSN4)
@Burtonboy That 2014 draft is gonna look like the most underrated draft in history. A really deep 1st round.
1 week, 2 days ago on Game 73 Scoring Chances: Senators 5 vs. Maple Leafs 3
@Luke_R And then Boston wins the lottery
@mcloki @loomx Yeah...and they're most desperate for exposure in Arizona.(an even bigger plus if that team moves to Seattle)
This is pretty much the ideal scenario for every team in the draft. Arizona wins the lottery and gets a true face of the franchise. Buffalo gets an American superstar. Edmonton gets another top pairing guy in Hanifin. Leafs get a great centre in Strome. Carolina gets Marner so they can trade Skinner. Columbus gets a much needed D prospect.The only downside if the Leafs end up with Hanifin is that he's a lefty like Rielly. The right side is pretty barren without Phaneuf.
@Cameron19 @loomx @DeclanK yup. which is why they have to clean house whether they get McDavid or Strome.
@Cameron19 @loomx @DeclanK And I'll still believe it until the end. There's gotta be at least a Boyd Devereaux moment before the end of the season to make us drop one spot.
@Cameron19 @loomx @DeclanK There's no way the Leafs don't at least go on a mini run. It's tradition.
@Cameron19 @DeclanK Yeah, when we win the lottery,
@DeclanK Honestly, I won't be disappointed with any of Strome, Hanifin, or Marner. This team needs help everywhere.
@Luke_R I just want a centre honestly. I'm so sick of having the weakest set of centers in the league. The game is evolving to the point where defensemen are becoming less important than having a good group of forwards that can transition well which means that centres are still going to be vital.
1 week, 3 days ago on Game 72 – SJS 4, TOR 1 – An even worse start for Toronto
@MaxwellHowe @loomx Evidently I do not remember last year's lottery. Thought it was later.
2 weeks, 3 days ago on GDT: Game #69, Toronto Maple Leafs at Calgary Flames (8 p.m., SN)
So apparently the draft lottery will take place before the playoffs start? Good. Don't have to wait two months to find out where we'll draft.
@Markovv55 @loomx @mtommy Well it wouldn't be the first time that NHL scouts/management overvalue size.
3 weeks, 3 days ago on Game 65 Scoring Chances: Lightning 4 vs. Maple Leafs 2
@Markovv55 @loomx @mtommy I'm not doubting the fact that he has skills. But at some point you have to judge him on his performance, and that has not been good at all. You can't deny that's a red flag. Smaller guys who don't perform in their draft year drop at the draft.
@mtommy @loomx @Markovv55 Definitely not a gamble to make in the top 6 of the draft IMO.
@mtommy @loomx @Markovv55 I know, but at this point he's only rated highly because of his size. It's always bad to pick a guy solely based on size. It's puzzling that he hasn't dropped like a stone. So many players are better than him at this point.
@Markovv55 No thanks. His numbers are dreadful. If he didn't have the size, he probably wouldn't be drafted.

The limits of observation: http://nhlnumbers.com/2015/3/1/the-limits-of-observation
@GibsonLPStudio Groundbreaking analysis there, Mike.
@Mattmark @loomx @vinoa @Yaknowwhat I think you're missing the point. You've highlighted a problem with small sample sizes. What one guy calls a shot and what another guy calls a shot can be different. That's a bias in stats. Large sample sizes eliminates that bias. There's nothing that can eliminate the bias of Dave Nonis, Claude Loiselle, and Dave Poulin believing that meat and potatoes players with minimal hockey skills are worth over 5mil.
@Yaknowwhat It's just an example though.
Also apparently a bunch of people do since a bunch of people still think Bozak and Kessel have special chemistry.
@Mattmark @vinoa @loomx @Yaknowwhat There's a difference between the bias of one GM or scout saying "I think Bozak and Kessel have great chemistry" and the bias of a stats guy saying "was that a SOG or a pass attempt?"stats help eliminate some of that first kind of bias.
@Yaknowwhat Right. It can be situational which is why you need context. Throwing Bozak on for a faceoff at the end of the game all the time can have on the stats which is why you should JUMBLE THE LINES THAT AREN'T WORKING, LEAFS. If Bozak's WOWY's show that he's complete trash without Kessel, it's worth investigating by switching things up and seeing if it's true. In that way, you can see the type of player you have in Bozak instead of paying him as if he's a top 6 center(for example).
@dlbu dlbu E @Yaknowwhat Nobody is saying pick one or the other though. You need to use both.
@zoidbergman Seems like it's just a move to keep the Marlies intact rather than calling people up and sending them down.
@vinoa @loomx @Yaknowwhat people get too hung up on corsi. Corsi alone will never be sufficient in the same way that any single indicator on player competence, stats or no stats, is never sufficient.
@Yaknowwhat No? Using those along with Corsi can help you identify problems with an individuals low corsi rating.
@Yaknowwhat Which is why there are WOWY and QualComp stats.
@Luke_R Bozak has barely averaged over 50 points/season in his career playing with Kessel and Lupul/JVR. One ppg player and a 60 point player. Vermette has averaged 42 points/season in Phoenix and I don't think he's played with a single 50 point player. better defensively too.Neither are great, but Vermette is better.
1 month ago on GDT: Game #62, Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens (7 p.m., CBC)
@HHT @Jay31 There's no way they pass us. Best we can do is 4th overall pre-lottery.
@HHT 485 points in NHL 552 games.
@rustynail Dumb. Clarkson was the biggest mistake. A close second is the Liles/Komisarek buyout gaffe and not trading Mac, Grabo, and Kule
@Nylanderthal @loomx @peterbleafs He's done.
1 month ago on Leafs trade David Clarkson for Nathan Horton
@peterbleafs They did have insurance but only on hockey-related injuries.
@Armchair GM Enough to get Mike Richards!!!
@sniperstar If the Leafs use the new cap space to acquire Richards: Lose-lose.
@Nylanderthal I'd give Jokinen a top 6 spot on the wing to see if he can improve his trade value.
1 month, 2 weeks ago on Leafs Trade Mike Santorelli & Cody Franson to the Nashville Predators
