I leave for a couple of days and Polak is on the top pairing?
Back to my summer beverages.
23 hours, 36 minutes ago on Jake Gardiner talks contract with Greg Brady
@hoolihan Smith and Ashton weren't with the team at the end of the season in the first place. They're still technically with the Marlies. Orr has not been sent down yet.
1 day, 23 hours ago on Jake Gardiner Signs for 5 years, $20.25 million
@Tim Horton @loomx @Yan28 ok. bottom 9 if Winnik really is a 3rd liner(which he probably shouldn't be)Lupul-Kadri-SantoWinnik-Holland-ClarksonBooth-Kontiola-Komarov
3 days ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@colino17 The rest will be split between TSN and LTV
@Jordan29 If Kadri is stepping up to 1C, I'd keep JVR there. Just brings a better style that would fit more IMO.
3 days, 12 hours ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@wiski False. according to capgeek, the Leafs have 17 forwards. 4 will be going down. Orr and Bodie going down leaves more than enough for Gardiner.

@vinoa @loomx Sure, there are games where it may not look like it. althoughI would say that can partly be attributed to fandom that weighs offense more than defense. Basically when you watch a game, you naturally look for successes, so Bernier making a save look routine registers as a success, and every shot for is weighed differently, but that's beside the point.
The Leafs directed 60+ shots at Miller a couple of seasons ago and few were good scoring chances. But just like you can have a high shot count where not a lot were good scoring chances, you can have multiple games where you less and score a lot. Those tend to get average out.
That's why advanced stats tend to get thrown out the window in the playoffs, the sampel size is too small. Over a larger period of time, the stat is pretty telling and can maybe tell you things that you otherwise may not realize when just watching games. As in: "oh, this guy's actually bringing pretty terrible in that position, maybe we should try to move him around"
@vinoa @Burtonboy There are definitely multiple ways to win a hockey game. But in general, teams with better possession finish with a better record. I'd rather align myself with the trend where a strong possession team wins in today's NHL rather than try to defy the odds and be the exception to the rule.
People tried to show that the Leafs were the exception to the rule at the beginning of this season and in the shortened season and, well...
@Burtonboy @loomx @The_Polish_Cannon @Yaknowwhat Of course not, but there was even blow-back to that statement with nonsense claim #2: "It's about quality, not quantity."
@The_Polish_Cannon @Yaknowwhat as any reasonable person would conclude. There was such a blow-back to any stats before the signing of Dubas.(partly because of PPP) Any mention and you'd get the standard "I don't need stats, I watch the games" nonsense.
@Cameron19 Maybe. But it's not like there's no room for Ashton anymore. 4 spots available with Kontiola, Frattin, Booth, and Holland who could all fail(in descending order of likelihood of failure)
@The_Polish_Cannon @loomx Yeah that makes more sense. I agree with that.
Otherwise I agree, it's puzzling that Winnik didn't get as much interest as guys like John Scott and Deryk Engelland.
Really? seems like lofty praise for a rag-tag bunch of players on 1 year deals who could fall flat on their faces just as much as they could succeed.
3 days, 17 hours ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@CanuckUKinToronto @Jordan29 @The_Polish_Cannon @loomx Exactly, in the biggest display of "cheap" play against our star players when John Scott was pestering Kessel, it was Carter Ashton who stepped up without hesitation. It doesn't matter if the player beats down the other guy, all that matters is that someone steps up. Colton Orr can't step up for Kessel because he's riding the pine for most of the season. And who cares if he gets him next game? a guy like Scott clearly doesn't give a shit because he kept being an asshole.
@TheCanucksnaphook For the future, that's a good 4th line. A 4th line that can play and fight. Minimum requirement for an NHL player: you have to be able to play the game.
@Jordan29 @The_Polish_Cannon @loomx Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren don't prevent or facilitate this team from being thrown around. When we beat Boston, we beat them with speed. When the Habs beat them, they beat them with speed, not by having George Parros in the lineup. When the Blackhawks beat them, they beat them with speed, not by having a goon in the lineup.
We don't need Colton Orr or Frazer McLaren against anybody. We clearly didn't need them last year, and we won't need them this year.
3 days, 18 hours ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@dlb Mad @loomx Just seems that everybody is assuming that these guys all make it and that they have jobs over younger guys like Ashton or Holland.
Nice contribution though. Thanks.
3 days, 20 hours ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@dlb Mad @loomx The Leafs would have to be awfully lucky to have all three of Booth, Kontiola, and Frattin turn into success stories that earn spots. Booth's and Frattin's careers are in the dumps and few KHL stars succeed here.
@TheCanucksnaphook @loomx When was the last time the Leafs had this many players 1-year deals?
If Ashton or Nylander or Leivo play well enough to get one of the 4 available forward spots, there's little to no burden financially in sending a guy who doesn't impress down like Frattin or Kontiola.
@Burtonboy @loomx @DeclanK @Bruffins Again, the "surprise" from "surprisingly quick" comes from his speed in relation to his size. As with Tim Gleason, his straightaway speed is good(for a big guy), it's his lateral movement(the kind that allows players to go around him) that isn't so good. Luckily, his positioning is great.
@TheCanucksnaphook But you're assuming that all signings succeed and grab spots.
It's important to remember that Santorelli, Booth, Frattin, Kontiola, and Holland could all fail here. All are either on one-year deals(for a reason) or, in Holland's case, are rookies. Is it likely that they all fail? no, but it's also unlikely that they all succeed. which is why I don't think this necessarily think there's a trade or that this steals opportunities from young kids like Ashton or Nylander in any way.
@Burtonboy @loomx @DeclanK @Bruffins He is. He's not Mike Komisarek, but he's not fast either. Tim Gleason is also a better/faster skater than he's given credit for. I'd say Polak's skating is similar to Gleason, only that Polak doesn't get himself in trouble as often.
@Burtonboy @loomx @DeclanK @Bruffins I have no doubt that Shanahan is correct. But "skates well for a big man" doesn't mean that he isn't slow. The king of dwarves is still a dwarf.
@Burtonboy @loomx @DeclanK @Bruffins Oh good. He skates well for a big man. Too bad the NHL isn't full of big men.
Pointing to one foot race doesn't prove anything. No idea how long either player was on the ice.
@hometeem Trade Franson for a 2nd and flip it for Oduya.
@Burtonboy @DeclanK @Bruffins He is. Speed isn't an asset of his, his positioning is.
@wendelsway1 There's no way he'll be as bad. He's never been that bad in this career and his shooting percentage was low. Hopefully that injury hasn't affected him permanently(I read that sometimes it does).
@wendelsfist Good. If they make it, they'll have to be very very good. Otherwise, they both benefit greatly from being in the top 6 of the Marlies.
Ashton still has a good shot though.
@wendelsfist Colton Orr first and foremost. Then Smith and Bodie. Then it's up to who wins the open spots.
3 days, 21 hours ago on Toronto Maple Leafs sign Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal
@Xxxxxnew Either we start making the playoffs, or we'll be the spring board that re-launches players' careers.
@dlb Mad Only if the team looks like one of the worst defensive team in history even when they do win.
@Bruffins @colino17 @The_Polish_Cannon @loomx Head Coach.
@The_Polish_Cannon @loomx He can play every forward position. You can either put him there or as 3LW or even 2RW where he played a bit last time around.
Another way to look at it is to look at all the players who have pretty much set roles on the team(or players that can't/won't be sent down), and all the positions that are up for grabs:JVR-Bozak-KesselLupul-Kadri-_________-____-ClarksonWinnik-____-Komarov4 spots available left for: Holland, Santorelli, Booth, Kontiola, Ashton, Frattin, Bodie, Smith. All of those guys could just as easily fail and be sent down. Still lots of opportunity. That's why I don't think a trade is necessary. All these experiments could go belly-up.
@Bruffins @loomx Everything should be done to make him fit with Kadri and Lupul. I like him on the 3rd line too but unfourtunately, his contract does not change with his role. If he stays a 3rd liner here, that sucks.
3 days, 21 hours ago on Monday Mashup: Gardiner’s Up Next
@peterbleafs @loomx Pretty much all needs have been addressed except for two major ones. The depth at forward was improved, the support for Phaneuf on D has improved, and the Leafs got more good puck possession players. Problems: Still a lack of quality centre depth. A lot of it relies on hope that Holland, Kontioal, santorelli etc, can hold down bottom 6 C jobs. Also: Carlyle. He needs to change how he runs things in some way. If his assistants help him do that, great, but for now that's still a question mark.
@MaxwellHowe With guys like Kontiola, Booth, Frattin, and Santorelli who could all fail miserably and be sent down, there's still a lot of room for Ashton to fit.
@The_Polish_Cannon No kidding. The signing was only announce 30 minutes ago.
Top to bottom, I think this is a good team now. I struggle with calling it a playoff team because of Carlyle, but I'll watch the games at least. The only piece that doesn't fit is Franson. He forces one of our D to play on his off side and the way the organization has talked about wanting a good L+R balance, something has to happen with him.JVR-Bozak-KesselLupul-Kadri-SantorelliBooth-Holland-ClarksonWinnik-Kontiola-KomarovGardiner-PhaneufRielly-RobidasPolak-FransonBernierReimer
@Ze_theLeafsFan Seems likely. Ashton and Frattin probably duke it out for the 13th forward. Don't forget, it's entirely possible that Kontiola fails as an NHLer, and Santorelli only had a couple good years. Lot of auditions.
@Burtonboy He can but I think he's been a winger mostly.
@Burtonboy Winnik was probably on the Leafs' radar a while ago.
Good Tarawna boy gives Cherry a player to fawn over. I wanted him 2 years ago from free agency. gonna be a real battle in the bottom 6 at training camp.
