Gotta wonder if there is any truth that Phanuef isn't liked in the locker room?
1 week, 4 days ago on @SharkClubDundas Game Day: Game #82, Maple Leafs at Senators
@NotTheCanucksnaphook @gjdevlinInteresting. I love hearing the rules and regulations of what can and can't be done off the ice etc. That's why I asked. I'm guessing Kessel will head back to Wisconsin and bury his head in the sand for the summer.
I know players scatter for the summer but do they ever get together with the coach for informal practice before camp opens?
@NotInsane @gjdevlinWhat's an interim coach gonna do in the summer?
@mike_84 @gjdevlinright and take the time to find the right fit based on philosophy personality etc etc.
If we do let Carlye go - I would rather the Leafs take their sweet time interviewing candidates and not making snap judgements. Take May, June and July to decide.
@Hmmm Is Granberg slotted to become a permanent defenseman next fall? What's the projection?
Wow..I think losing 1-0 was a collective fuck you statement from the Leaf players to the coach(es) and upper management.
Kessel put some effort into playing but this is not a one man show.
Something is seriously wrong here folks. Yeah they lost the last 8 to 11 to free fall but something has triggered this. Resentmen. Poor coaching, etc. You name it.
Time to press the reset button.
Kessel needs to get away for the summer-hang out in Wisconsin and just train quietly.
It's interesting that Randy says he's trying to get them to play his way but according to Lupol:
"We didn’t seem to be able to break the cycle, and they were using the
points,” Lupul lamented. “We play with a lot of people down low in our
zone so the points are open, but then they seemed to be getting the
point shots through and getting a lot of tips and rebounds. Obviously
something was wrong there.”
That's why we have no offensive system. Our forwards are too tired when we finally break the opposing players cycle and we have to switch to the 2nd or 3rd lines...
Goes to show that Randy and the players are NOT on the same page.
1 week, 4 days ago on Peter DeBoer makes some sense as the Maple Leafs’ next head coach
@vinoa @gjdevlin@NotTheCanucksnaphookIt's amazing about Claude Julien. He was fired by the Canadians because the players didn't want to follow his system - battle the boards etc. So the Bruins hire him and he had players that battled the boards - they bought into his system and now lookit the Bruins. Damn.
Montreal is "soft" but they have speed.
@Cameron19 @gjdevlinI noticed a change when Carlye came on. They started fighting more and getting injured in the process. :-)
@Cameron19 @gjdevlinGood point - D'Amigo is one player I would like to see up on a constant basis - 5'11'' this kid battles it all.
What was Ron Wilson's defensive system?
I know his offensive system was terrible - it was basically British Bull Dog where the Leafs would carry up the puck to score. The opposing team became wise to it as the season wore on and they would just flood the neutral zone and force a turn over. He just wouldn't change his system.
@vinoa @gjdevlin@NotTheCanucksnaphookThe Sharks puzzle me. They make the playoffs but falter in the first two rounds. (SMH)
@Cameron19 @gjdevlinis there another article that breaks down Randy's system that I can read? I just want to read more on it. Thanks. (giving up the boards is a fucking terrible idea)
I wanted to add - then WHY are people bitching about trading Phanuef? He's following the system thus he's not battling the boards and he's following Randy's system.
I hope new coach let's the big dogs out because Phanuef is MEAN.
@Cameron19 @gjdevlinMuskoka Five is one example. The Blue and White disease - now I don't know if it is 100% accurate but players coming in can see how the current players have a country club system - instead of fighting against it they fall into the trap. This does happen.
@vinoa @NotTheCanucksnaphook@gjdevlinI wish we kept Brown. He had nice hands on the 4th line along with dropping the gloves. Pity.
@Cameron19 @gjdevlinHe wanted them to go down low and cycle. Their cycling is awful and that's why they have turn overs in the offensive zone.
Where does it say Randy doesn't want them engaged in board battles?
@vinoa @gjdevlinwell I was thinking along the lines of a Lupol, Kadri etc - one of them (be a winger or a center) will be shuffled out - the Leafs will have to sacrifice talent this summer if they want a true upgrade OR:
They could stand pat with a brand new coach and go with those coming up with the Marlies.
Wow - what a great write up, Alec! The biggest challenge for DeBoer - IF - he's the next coach (or any next coach) is how is he going to dissolve the dreaded Blue and White disease? Some players who come in see that the established players are not grinding it out thus they drop their current skill set and follow by (bad) example thus the pylon effect is in place.
The players just DIDNT want to grind the corners no matter how much Randy told them too. Randy is NOT on the ice. Like Randy - and the rest of us - we are confounded.
So how will DeBoer get these players off their asses? They are locked up in contracts and they have a "I don't care I'm going to buy another car" contract. It's going to be tough.
Now the swarm defense - I'm confused - how is this different from the collapsing system? One thing I did complain about was Randy's collapsing system and one of Alec's bloggers wrote a very detailed explanation (I forgot his name forgive me) and it was a great write up. Shortly after that article came out, I noticed the collapsing system disappeared - the players were more on the point with their opponents however they did not battle in the corners for the puck in their own zone and the result was more defensive turn-overs and the shot count continued to plague the team for the remainder of the season.
When I say this team is soft - they are soft when it comes to battling the puck.
So exactly what is the swarm system? I don't see any swarming - just guys waving their sticks around and not attacking their opponents one on one. When the opposing forwards skate into the zone with the pucks, all the defense does is skate with them and try to put their sticks on their sticks - I don't get it because they have the ability to push them off balance.
Mark my words - the Leafs WILL SACRIFICE A CENTER this year.
@4evrblue @Mind Bomb@gjdevlinand tired players = more injuries, too..sigh
1 week, 5 days ago on Game Review: Game #81, Panthers 4 vs. Leafs 2
@Mind Bomb @gjdevlinTowards the end he reduced Kadri's minutes by a lot yeah.
A lot of thinking for the Leafs management to do. I wish I were a fly on the wall with the exit interviews on Monday. The Leafs have to ask themselves why they have to fire Randy. Now before you jump on the fire Randy bandwagon, let's take a step back.
Randy is one coach who tried to coach a system of cycling, aggressive fore checking, etc yet the players continue to tune him out and stand around. This was basically "the same team" that he inherited from Ron Wilson with slightly different systems. Ron preached a run and gun offense that pettered out when opposing players would just park themselves in the neutral zone to force turn overs. They tuned him out and got him fired. Now the same trend is happening in the Maple Leafs Country Club system.
I was not completely sold on the idea of firing Randy during the season.
It's not about re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. It's about moving the deck chairs to the Lufthansia (a ship that was sunk by the Germans). The question is how often to do have to fire coaches just to accommodate the players? The Leafs are not playing hockey at all - they just quit after the olylmpic break and something tells me that something else is going on in the locker room.
Is a new coach going to revamp the system and all of a sudden are the players going to become better overnight?
Yes - changes will come. You can change coaches and players but how do you change the mentality? A sign of things that are out of synch are the comments by Leaf's defense men Gleason - he's a newcomer as of last March and he seems to express frustration at his fellow D men who are not tenacious on the puck and covering their point and opposing players.
Let's look at the Clarkson situation. Clarkson was suspended for the first 10 games of the season. Right off the bat - the Leafs were ALREADY getting out-shot and Clarkson was no where with us during those 10 games. So the problem of being out-shot has nothing to do with Clarkson really. If Clarkson can redeem himself over the summer by working with Barb Underhill on his skating then next year could be his year.
Let's talk about the forwards. They are SOFT. Bozak comes from a college where they all wear face cages and lack toughness that follows our AHL and CHL counterparts. I don't believe that college hockey players are "tougher" - I just believe that many if not all are softer. Bozak lacks grit and grind. He has great hands and good insight but just lacking in physically.
Kessel is of the same mold - shies away from hits but has a deadly wrist shot and terrific speed. I'm all for keeping him but you cannot keep a bunch of players who won't battle the corners.
The Leafs WILL sacrifice at least forward this summer for a trade and my guts say it could be Bozak.
Kadri - this guy has some snarl but no bite - he needs veteran leadership to push him to the next level and regain his snarl on a nightly basis. That kid can hit. He can skate. He can pass. He's smart. He needs to work harder.
Kulemin - let him go or trade his rights for a 2nd or 3rd rounder. He has brought three years of the same thing. It's time to make a change here for someone who WANTS to play. He works hard but his scoring touch is gone.
Franson - he wants more money. I'm not impressed with him so trade his rights or let him walk.
The Leafs are going to have to let some folks just go and not tie them up with bad contracts "just in case they become better"
JVR - what can I say? Keep him.
I feel bad for Randy - yeah he threw Riemer under the bus and that is something I think he truly regrets but I always felt he was one of the nicer and honest coaches we've had but it's just not working out. If he stays, I don't know what to say but it's probably best to move on.
I know you won't read this Randy but I wish you well with sincerity.
@ingy56 @whalzKane is Kadri 2.0
2 weeks, 4 days ago on Shark Club Game Day: Game #79, Jets at Maple Leafs
@MikeGartner11 @gjdevlinOr the Ocala VR (spelling) headset where you can sit at the game and watch it from your living room..That's gonna be awesome!
@MikeGartner11 @gjdevlinyeah..when one is at the game they can really see things as opposed to the telly. I was at a Coyotes game and I was able to observe Leumiux for a few shifts - the guy is a floater - he waits for opportunities and doesn't engage..hanging to the edge of a scrum then getting the puck to make his offensive move. I was kind of surprised but Lemiux had more talent of course.
@Jordan29 @ingy56why is he a piece of shit?
The only thing I want to add on Clarkson in the Bruins game.
Who helped Bernier off the ice? Clarkson
Who dropped the gloves: Clarkson
Yeah - he's got skating issues but I guess you can't question his heart. He's someone on the wing and I think he will be around for at least another year unless he continues to regress.
2 weeks, 6 days ago on @SharkClubDundas Game Day: Game #78, Bruins at Maple Leafs
@Reversethecurse13 @gjdevlinthank you my son. (touches forehead)
The problem is that the Leafs are a passive/aggresive team - when a player carries the puck into the zone the Leafs don't check yard - they just finish. The Bruins are the team that attack immediately.
The ghost of game 7 has been exorcised. You may all go in peace. (makes sign of the cross)
@MaxwellHowe @gjdevlinof course..Franson let the player skate into the zone with the puck and he didn't even pin him to the boards...
Wow - this is a carbon copy of last year's 7th game.
Fans seem to be cheering sarcastically. I would call a time out if I were Randy to get them settled.
And there goes the fucking game
I know there's a lot of vitrol against Clarkson about his play on ice and i see it too but what is going on that he's a locker room problem? He's not liked by his teammates?
I'm sure that Nonis will demand a list of teams from the NTC players after the season is over from their agent. Ie - Clarkson has a list of 14 teams he will accept a trade to.
@dontcallmeshirley If we managed to dump Clarkson maybe we can fit in Bolland but his injury gives me pause if he's 110%. For five mil per? 4.0 three years maybe..
And the Leafs show up two hours after the dance? Yeah - they are playing hard - man to man but this should have been evident every game two weeks ago.
Disgusting really. It's like-"its same to assume we won't make the playoffs so we can play hard now" It's like they DON'T want to be in the playoffs?
@Alec Brownscombe @Leafs2 Isles1Why does everyone think that Clarkson is a problem in the locker room? He's a problem ON the ice.
3 weeks, 1 day ago on Game Review: Game #77, Maple Leafs 3 vs. Flames 2
@LeafsManiac @JmessihRielly and Gardiner rawk. They'll be here next year.
3 weeks, 4 days ago on @SharkClubDundas Game Day: Game #76, Red Wings at Maple Leafs
@vinoa @Loric76No he's going to cuddle with Carlye
This is probably going to be my last post for a while as I'm done here until something happens but the way I see it - nope. There's no point in firing Carlye. Bringing in a coach with six games left does nothing. For this team, it's just a lot of quit. Kadri had 6 and 4 minutes in the 1st and 2nd period.
Until then guys - have a good summer - I'm not gonna let this team get to me anymore. Stay classy you all.
This twitter caught my attention:
@Hope_Smoke: Simmons "I've learned that if Clarkson isn't the least popular player in that Leafs room he is one of them"” hmmmm
I'm not sure what it means - that Clarkson isn't liked in the locker room?
@Pazzuzzu Why was D'miggo called up? I like the guy - gets dirty in corners and battles hard.
Trading Phanuef..going to be tough if Nonis is still around. GM's have egos - "but I signed the guy!"
First and foremost, I'm a huge member of the guilty party that drops colossal f bombs and part of me wishes I don't do that but hey we gotta vent or in other words "vape on" as one member likes to say.
Firings, trades, demotions - Carlye this Carlye that - Nonis what Nonis that - you can throw them all into the mix at this moment but right now we are on the back of this current 18 wheeler and we just have to ride it out until the season is over. Tonight, Carlye will be behind the bench and everyone will be on the ice. Tonight will take care of itself. The end of the season will take care of itself.
Admittedly, they have pressed the reset button one too many times in the last few games.
At this moment for the next seven to five games - the onus isn't really on us or Carlye or the guys upstairs at this moment. It's on the players. It's UP to the players. Players need to play. Need to battle for the puck. Carlye did point out - and I agree 100% - it's those one on one battles with the pucks that we are losing and he's RIGHT. They can make a huge difference.
No one in the Leafs locker room or anyone in Leaf's Brass will ever see my following question nor will they ever acknowledge it.
The ONE simple question I would ask each Leaf player if I was in the dressing room before the game:
"Do you want to play hockey tonight?"
I also noted an odd pattern in the last few games - it looked as if when the opposing team would score then the leafs would apply pressure to tie it up then take the foot off the gas and then the other team would score THEN the Leafs would press to tie then take the foot off the gas.
I thought it was a bizarre thing like they are deliberately tanking the season.
3 weeks, 5 days ago on @SharkClubDundas Game Day: Game #75, Maple Leafs at Flyers
@Wilbur @Burtonboy@leafersutherlandI concur. I just never saw Nonis as a hockey guy - a business man yeah but..a hockey guy? No.
I remember the Leafs lost in a brutal game to Quebec. I think it was one of those games at the Copps Colisieum or something..and they lost like 12-3 or something. Fans threw garbage on the ice.
I'm hoping the fans will do the same tomorrow if we lose.
