@Greg Fenton @rickpearce76 I don't think all the players get a pass. I do think most of them are decent players who are in a situation where they aren't being utilized the right way. Here are my reasons for hating Carlyle's job with this team:
1. He over uses the top line to try to make up for making no effort to put together a decent 4th line. The majority of the year he iced at least one goon, lots of times 2, and then played them 5 minutes. Undue time on the ice for the top line that has them gassed and banged up by this point. This also lead to a huge mismanagement of players like Kuli and McClemment getting too much time and in the wrong situations.
2. As mentioned, there are teams with less talent who play a more structured game and have had more success doing so. To constantly hear the media say we don't have the guns to play Carlyle hockey is pathetic. A good coach should make the most out of what he has, not try to force guys to play his system if they prove they cannot.
3. fuckit, I don't have all day to hate on RC.
The point about Phaneuf is that he takes way too much of the blame while others do not. People somehow think if we could just replace Phaneuf with Weber then everything would change. But I never hear ppl say "Why the fuck didn't Gunnar take his man".
Nobody in that room should feel proud about the season they had this year. Personal accomplishments aside, the team underachieved and let down the fans yet again. Everyone should wear that.
1 week, 3 days ago on Poll: Who do you want as the Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs?
@Belfour20/JB-45 @rickpearce76 I was referring to ppl who aren't on here. Shoulda clarified. Here is where I come to vent to like minded souls.
It really fucking irks me to see Phaneuf constantly called out by so called "knowledgeable" leafs fans. Gunnar and Franson get a pass every time. Meanwhile Franson has had more turnovers this season than a fucking bakery. He's good for 1 goal a game easy. Gunnarson would be out manned in a midget AA game in front of the net. It's fucking pathetic. Phaneuf, nor any d-man in the league could do this on their own. Reilly and Gardiner are both going to be good, but it's going to be 2-3 more years before they get to that level.
To make it all worse Nonis and Carlyle's inability to see/evaluate their defense and play (or enforce with the players) a defensive system to allow the team to function with what they have is fuckin painful.
There are way less talented teams playing better hockey than we play. I don't buy that we need a turnover of 12 players to be successful. We need 2 defenders and maybe 2 forwards and a coach who can actually utilize his strengths and minimize weaknesses.
Carlyle HAS to go. And if Nonis doesn't see that then he does too.
What about Spott?
@Anthony Petrielli Why does it feel like the only way we will get to see D'Amigo play regularly is if Orr and McClaren fall off the face of the earth.
For all the talk the media gives about Carlyle being a good coach nobody talks about his lack of roster utilization problem and the strain he is putting on our top line by using our 4th line at such a low rate. This problem about the leafs being considered a 1 line team could be somewhat alleviated by Randy actually attempting to ice a 4th line with a mix of talent and grit. Like McClemment, D'Amigo, Carter.

I think an easy thing to point out, but not an easy thing to fix, is that we need upgrades on these D: Gunnar, Franson. That's the biggest problem. One of them could possibly be the #4 but we need Dion plus 2 more guys better than them. It looks like the plan might just be to stick it out until those 2 spots get filled by Reilly and Gardiner.
Not sure what's out there for D this offseason, but we need an upgrade. We also need Komorov back.
