@dlb eh Amen, brother.

@Mattmark It might be an indicator of Phaneuf's value/worth, but we've been "bombed" by lesser teams (e.g., Columbus and Vancouver) than LA and St. Louis with him in the lineup. You can't read too much into his absence (or presence, for that matter).
@Burtonboy Does anyone expect NYI to beat anybody ... ever? That was a HUGE surprise, though.

@Burtonboy It won't be that bad. LA will be tired from "free-wheeling" over the Habs, and sore from all of the punishing hits they delivered. I'm thinking it will be a close game ... could go either way.

@Anthony Petrielli @hoolihan Failing to chip the puck out of their D-zone, and not dumping it deep in the offensive zone have been HUGE problems for this team all season. As a result, they spend far too much time in their own zone, and hardly ever mount a GOOD forecheck or cycle game in the O-zone.

@Burtonboy @wendelsway1 Me too.

Oops ... I believe the goalie is actually Bernier. My bad. Doesn't change the fact that he didn't "read and react" very well in that situation.

On the Dallas goal described above, it's pretty hard to believe you actually said "The goal was all on Ranger". You started the paragraph by stating the real cause of the goal ... "The Leafs made a bad change", which was compounded by the fact that the puck wasn't dumped deep into the Dallas zone. Also, the backchecker who should have been picking up the guy cruising down the slot is coasting. And finally, Reimer is over-committed to the shot from Horcoff ... out way too far to give himself a chance to get across the net if that pass is made in an odd-man rush situation. So ... as I've pointed out before, it's VERY rare that a goal is the fault of one player.
But, hey, we all have our whipping boys!

Tried to edit my post, and it got screwed up. Here are my changes ...
The last diagram, before the "highlights", doesn't seem correct to me. In many games the player above the triangle is going completely from one side to the other, rather than changing places with the player at the apex of the triangle, when the opposition moves the puck D-to-D. I don't recall them playing the "sweeper" across the top of the triangle ... at least it wasn't so "blatant" to me.
Has the system changed since last season?
The personnel has certainly changed, at least up front. Part of that was by design, but it has also been the result of injuries. Perhaps if the players they have aren't successful with this system they should consider going back to a simple box, rotating into a diamond against a pyramid PP, at least until they get some more capable bodies back in the lineup?

@loomx @hoolihan @Belfour20 You have no idea what their off season goal was. I'd have to say the goal is always to improve the team any way possible. I'd say he's done that on paper. There's a disconnect between that and the on-ice product. If you could solve that, I'm sure you'd be coaching in "The Show".
The "D" should be better simply for having an extra year of experience, and more familiarity with the system. Again, it's not showing on the ice.
And I'd have to say I'd take Bernier over Scrivens ... long-term ... any day of the week. The latter is doing fine in LA, but they only give up 5 or 6 scoring chances a game. The Leafs allow that per period.

@Belfour20 No ... and who cares?
@loomx @hoolihan @Belfour20 They made the playoffs based on half a season ... didn't have time to go into their "January swoon". The team on the ice is still largely JFJ II's. Let's see how they finish this season.
BTW - Most of Nonis' additions have been pretty good ... Bernier, Bolland, Clarkson (not so much), Holland, Raymond, and Smith. Only McLaren and Ranger have been a little suspect.
@4evrblue Absolutely correct.
@Belfour20 @hoolihan JFJ II ... I refuse to use the "B word" ... to describe the guy who almost screwed this team up as bad as his useless predecessor.
@-Keon- The focus was ALWAYS on him ... he never met a camera or microphone he didn't LOVE!
@Belfour20 @hoolihan And he had 3+ years to do it. I prefer Nonis to "JFJ II" hands down!
@Belfour20 Maybe you just don't like the fact that you don't know what he's up to 'til it's done? Instead of hearing about EVERYTHING ... LOUDLY ... and then seeing only 1/4 of it actually get "finished".
@Uncle Otis @hoolihan The protestants' "colour" is orange, as in William of ... Not sure what that has to do with this. Another story I read said that Toronto sports teams had used the blue and white scheme as far back as the Argonauts of the late 1800's.
