@RandomScrub @The_Polish_Cannon @DJBrianBurke @Xxxxxnew yeah no doubt that's probably his goal. Is it really worth it to create so much bad blood between the organization and its star.  My guess is Subban is not going to forget this treatment, and is going to jump ship to a team he feels wanted on

@RandomScrub @The_Polish_Cannon @DJBrianBurke @Xxxxxnew yep. Bergevin is playing hardball but at the cost of alienating his star player. Yet he pays 4th liners 2M and didn't hesitate throwing money to Emelin. He's playing hardball with the wrong players

@RandomScrub @Xxxxxnew every other team in the league would jump at the opportunity to lock subban up with an 8 year deal. It must feel extremely shitty that his own organization, that he's worked so hard for, doesn't appreciate his efforts and value

@RandomScrub @Xxxxxnew it's worse than nickel and diming him. Bergevin is flat out robbing him. Subban wanted a long term deal 2 years ago, but gave in to bergevin's bridge deal for half his market value in order for Subban to prove what he can do. Well he went on to win a Norris, join the Olympic team and lead his team into the playoffs. Now Subban, after losing millions he should have had in the first deal, is being robbed again.

@hoolihan @The_Polish_Cannon @Greg Fenton @loomx anyone who doesn't see how valuable Phaneuf is as a defence man is just plain ignorant.

Pushing out the team's best all round D-man to make room for an offensive minded D-man with a massive contract is poor cap management. The organization has been making a concentrated effort to draft mobile puck moving defensemen for the past few years. Rielly, Gardiner, Finn, Percy. If Rielly hits his full potential he can very well be a Norris caliber D-man

How could they throw money at Emelin without hesitation and dick around their star player. Both sides now want a 1 year deal, MTL has no choice but to trade Subban at the deadline now or risk having him leave without returns

@CanuckUKinToronto @Mattmark florida's power play was brutal, they really need a right handed PP specialist. Kulikov has been rumoured to be on the trade block, he's been playing top 4 and getting second most ice time of all D-men on florida.

Rielly - Phaneuf

Gardiner - Robidas

Kulikov - Polak

(Nevermind I forgot Ekblad is a right handed shot. Doubt they would ever trade away Kulikov for a package involving Franson.)

@CanuckUKinToronto @B_Leaf not all 1C's are drafted with a lottery pick. It takes a lot of luck and patience to get that 1C

1 day, 8 hours ago on Jake Gardiner talks contract with Greg Brady

@B_Leaf you're talking about the hardest position in the league to address. I think there's only 2 teams in the league that has a 1C that they didn't draft themselves. All you can do is address the areas you can, keep drafting and developing hoping that a player within the organization can rise up, continue to acquire enough assets until you can eventually put together a deal without crippling the organization (few teams ever trade a 1c), or wait till free agency (which you can't rely on because teams rarely , if ever, let star 1C's go to FA.

So the only option really is for management to address the weaknesses it can, and continue to draft. Bozak may not be an ideal 1C, but the top line wasn't the team's problems last year with an elite winger like Kessel who controls the play of the line. Management has balanced out the back end with more right handed D and experience and completely revamped the bottom 6.

Also I feel you shouldn't ignore Holland to add to your narrative. He is by all accounts an NHL centerman capable of 2C-3C.

@vinoa @Greg Fenton than you got depth guys like Bickell, Saad and Bolland that were instrumental for Chicago in the playoffs. It's like the saying goes, Bottom 6s win championships.

Both teams normally do a good job of shutting down each others star players in the playoffs. That's why a guy like Brandon Saad can score 16 PTS in 19 playoff games

@Yaknowwhat @The_Polish_Cannon they're trying to form a competitive team while not sacrificing the long term sustainability of the franchise. By bringing in experienced players on short 1 year deals to act as placeholders/mentors to young players while driving competition within the organization for roster spots.

2 days, 12 hours ago on Jake Gardiner Signs for 5 years, $20.25 million

@Yaknowwhat The core still has many years ahead of them. And if in 2 years the team is still struggling they can trade off players like Kessel and Phaneuf for 1st rounders, prospects and continue to stock the cupboards and the focus will shift to building around Nylander, Kadri, Rielly, Gardiner, Leivo, etc, with a steady flow of development coming up behind them. If the team makes knee jerk reactions and trades 1st round picks and prospects to try and win now, they risk disrupting the flow of development. If the team still crashes and burns now you have a big gap in the prospect pool below the players that are currently being developed and then we end up in the same spot we're in now. Some good pieces but nothing to surround them with

@Yaknowwhat @The_Polish_Cannon @colino17 what? No where you getting this from? I'm saying keep the 1st rounder and keep developing depth. We'll get our own star players that we can utilize on cheap contracts. If there's anyone the team should be trading first rounders for it's a young bonafied 1C. Rielly can turn out better than Subban, and we've got Gardiner, Finn, Percy in the system.

@dlb Mad @The_Polish_Cannon true it was a combo of bad goaltending and bad D system, but Giguere also criticized the defensive systems here after he left the team. He was asked about the Ron Wilson firing and he said, maybe the goalies will actually stand a chance now. Little did he know how much worse the D would get under Carlyle.
